St Mary the Virgin has stood at Monken Hadley since 1494, and the beacon on its tower once guided travellers across Enfield Chase; below it, red-brick Georgian houses built for City merchants sit in their own grounds around Hadley Green. London Carpet Cleaning has worked Monken Hadley, EN5, since 2009, up the Great North Road to the obelisk at Hadley Highstone. The price is from £36 a room, with carpets dry within 6 to 7 hours.

A Georgian village inside Greater London
Barnet made Monken Hadley a conservation area in December 1968, one of the first four in the borough, and the reasons are still standing. The church, refaced in the 19th century, keeps its beacon, which is still lit for coronations and jubilees. The Battle of Barnet was fought within sight of it in 1471, and in 1740 Sir Jeremy Sambrook put up the Highstone obelisk where the Great North Road met the old road to St Albans. Before Telford re-routed the road in 1826, up to 150 coaches a day crossed Hadley Green.
The housing follows that history. Red-brick Georgian houses built for City merchants stand in their own grounds around the green, alongside Livingstone Cottage and Wilbraham’s Almshouses of 1612, six red-brick cottages on Hadley Green Road, with Pagitt’s flint almshouses close by. On Camlet Way, Dury Road and the lane called Hadley Common, substantial Victorian and later houses face Monken Hadley Common itself, some 72 hectares of former grazing land running out towards Cockfosters. Its five white gates are listed and must stay as long as grazing rights exist. Many of the buildings are listed too, much of the conservation area lies in the Green Belt, and parts of it carry an Article 4 direction that controls some alterations to the houses.
High Barnet station, the end of the Northern line, is under a mile south. New Barnet’s Great Northern trains are a short drive east, and Cockfosters sits at the far end of the common.
Old houses, long-settled owners: the figures
| Homes that are | Share |
|---|---|
| Detached houses | 14.9% |
| Built before 1900 | 29.1% |
| Homes with four or more bedrooms | 31.0% |
| Owned outright, with no mortgage | 36.6% |
| Rented from the council or a housing association | 7.5% |
The census puts Monken Hadley in one area with High Barnet town centre, so the figures are wider than the village, and they still show its character. Almost three homes in ten (29.1%) were built before 1900. Detached houses make up 14.9%, and 31.0% of homes have four or more bedrooms. Only 7.5% are rented from the council or a housing association.
The owner figure tells us most about the carpets. More than a third of homes (36.6%) are owned outright, which usually means people who have lived in the same house for decades and bought good carpet to last. Wool is the norm, often fitted over old boards, and it has had years to collect the fine soil that a vacuum leaves at the base of the pile. A four-bed house with a through-lounge and one flight of stairs comes to £246, and the bigger houses often have a second flight. Only 1.5% of homes lack central heating, though a big Georgian room with tall windows takes longer to warm, so we plan the drying with you.

Gravel drives and the green
Most houses here have a drive or a gravel forecourt, so the van usually parks off the road. Where the lane past the church narrows, we tuck the van in and run longer hoses to the door. We never park on the green or the common verges; the green has been council land since 1931, and the common is not in public ownership, so neither is a car park. If the drive is long, tell us when you book and we bring extra hose.
Inside, these houses ask for care with the route. We lay runners from the door to the rooms we are cleaning and protect stone steps and polished hall floors. The hose is kept clear of painted skirting and banisters. Lift rugs off the stairs and take ornaments off any low tables you would like us to move. The Article 4 rules and the listing control what you change outside and to the fabric of the house; a carpet clean touches neither.
Wool and winter mud
Wool is the default here. Fitted wool twist in the bedrooms and runners over old boards on the stairs: the kind of flooring that rewards careful cleaning and punishes harsh chemicals. A typical run of jobs this side of the green means a full set of upstairs carpets in a house on Hadley Green, or a pair of wool rugs cleaned in the room at a house near Hadley Highstone. Lined curtains get cleaned hanging in place, so there is no shrinkage risk. And mud, always. Between dog walks on the common and winter sledging at King George’s Fields, hall carpets here work hard from October to March.
Red wine that has sat in cream upholstery for months does not always lift completely. We get most of it out, and we tell you before we start if we think a faint ghost will stay. Tea rings and years of general grey usually come up better than owners expect.

Linen covers and Persian rugs
Most visits here pair steam carpet cleaning for the fitted wool with sofa and upholstery cleaning for pale cotton and linen covers, and our rug cleaning service cleans Persian and wool pieces in your home, with a photo first for any antique or very old one. We are in High Barnet and New Barnet most weeks, and we cover the rest of Barnet on the same fixed prices.
Monken Hadley questions
Do you cover all of Monken Hadley, from Hadley Green to the common?
All of it: the Georgian houses around Hadley Green, the lanes by the church, Camlet Way and Dury Road out to Monken Hadley Common, and Hadley Highstone along the Great North Road. EN5 is the core, and we cross into EN4 on the eastern side of the common, towards Cockfosters, at no extra charge.
Can your van get close enough on the narrow lanes?
Yes. Most houses here have a drive or a gravel forecourt, and where the lane past the church tightens we tuck the van in and run longer hoses to the door. We never park on the green or the common verges, so mention any quirk with your frontage when you book.
How do you treat wool carpets in period houses?
With wool-safe products at a neutral pH and less moisture than a standard synthetic clean, so the pile keeps its body and the colours stay put. Over old floorboards we work drier still, because water finding its way into two-hundred-year-old timber helps nobody.
How long will everything take to dry?
Fitted carpets are dry within 6 to 7 hours. Thick wool pile in a cold room takes longer, and mattresses and sofa cushions want the rest of the day, so we suggest a morning slot and a window left ajar. Big Georgian rooms with decent airflow dry quickest of all.
The dog comes back from the common soaked every day. How often should the hall carpet be cleaned?
For a hall that takes a wet dog daily through the winter, once a year is about right, ideally in spring once the mud season ends. Clay and leaf mould sit low in the pile and grind at the fibres, so a yearly clean does more for the carpet’s life than its looks. Between cleans, a slow vacuum and a towel by the door make a real difference.
Our stair runner is held by brass rods. Do they have to come out?
No. We clean the runner in place, working each tread with low moisture so the timber either side stays dry, and the rods stay where they are. We wipe the rods and clips as we go. If a rod is loose or a clip has failed, we point it out, since a runner that shifts underfoot wears unevenly and is a trip risk.
Every clean is backed by our re-clean guarantee: if a patch has not come up right, we return and go over it again for nothing. Our cleaners are fully insured and DBS-checked, and Barnet households have booked us since 2009. If Monken Hadley is home, we are already round the corner.
