The lock-keeper’s cottage at New Haw Lock dates from 1782 and is Grade II listed, and past it the Wey Navigation leads into streets of 1930s semis, post-war family houses and bungalows. London Carpet Cleaning has covered New Haw, KT15, since 2009, on the same terms as any London street. Prices run from £36 a room, and carpets are dry within 6 to 7 hours.

A commuter village that grew south down Woodham Lane

New Haw sits about a mile south of Addlestone and 20 miles out of London, in Runnymede. Planning permission first opened the fields around 1908, and the railway gave the village its push: Byfleet and New Haw station opened on 10 July 1927 as West Weybridge, built for the growing workforce at the Vickers aircraft factory at Brooklands, and took its present name in June 1962. The houses came in two waves. The first was the 1930s, and the second was the commuter boom of the 1950s and 60s, when the village spread south-west down Woodham Lane towards Woodham and West Byfleet.

The result is a lot of three-bedroom semis, plenty of bungalows, and a scattering of later detached homes and small blocks of flats. Roads like The Avenue, Scotland Bridge Road and Heron Way are typical of the older streets, with fitted carpet upstairs and a staircase that takes the daily traffic. The Broadway, with its shops and the library, keeps day-to-day life local. On the Wey Navigation, which the National Trust owns, the New Haw stretch has three steep locks in a short distance, and the M25 runs along the western side of the village without a junction.

Built 1945 to 197243.2%

The census counts New Haw together with Woodham next door, and the two waves of building show up plainly. Some 29.5% of homes date from 1919 to 1944, and 43.2% from 1945 to 1972, so between them the inter-war and post-war decades account for nearly three homes in four. The semi is the standard house (45.0%), and three bedrooms is the standard size (44.0%). A New Haw semi off Woodham Lane with three bedrooms, a through-lounge and the stairs comes to £210.

Ownership is settled: 41.3% of homes are owned outright, which usually means older owners and carpets that have been down a long time. Another 6.1% are rented straight from Runnymede council. For us that means stairs in almost every job, and often a knocked-through lounge in a semi. Only 0.9% of homes have no central heating, so drying is rarely held up.

Figures: ONS Census 2021 (Runnymede 010) and VOA council tax stock, March 2024.

Stairs, sofas and towpath mud

The jobs here follow the houses. Family lounges and stairs in the Woodham Lane semis take most of the wear: coffee gone straight into a pale lounge carpet, felt tip and grubby arms on a fabric corner sofa, a dark patch worn in by a bedroom door. There is a lot of garden and towpath nearby, so muddy marks tracked up the stairs are a regular call, and we work carefully round the skirting and spindles.

Wool rugs are the other regular. A wool rug a pet has been sick on usually comes up fresh, but wool holds water and dries slowly, so it stays damp for longer than a fitted carpet. We extract as much water as we can before we leave, and we tell you what to expect while it dries.

Parking and timing in New Haw

Outside The Broadway, New Haw is a village of semis and bungalows with drives and on-street space, so we usually pull up at the door. There is no car park at Byfleet and New Haw station, so the streets near it fill with commuters on weekdays; if you live close to the station, a mid-morning start gives us the best chance of a space. New Haw Junior School and Grange Community Infant School both bring a school-run rush, and we time a morning visit to arrive once it has passed.

On the day, clear the stairs and the hall first, since the hose runs that way. In a bungalow, move small tables and plants out of the lounge and the bedrooms. If the sofa is being cleaned as well, take the throws and cushions off, and we do the sofa while the carpet dries.

Carpet, upholstery and rug cleaning in KT15

For fitted carpets we use hot-water extraction, the steam carpet cleaning method that rinses the soap and soil back out so nothing stays in the pile to attract fresh dirt. Sofas and dining chairs go through our upholstery cleaning service, matched to the fabric so a corner sofa or a tired cushion comes up evenly. Wool and delicate rugs are handled in your home by our rug cleaning team, with a photo first for anything old or fragile. New Haw is on the Surrey side of the line, and the same team works the rest of Kingston upon Thames and the London boroughs beyond.

Your New Haw questions

Which New Haw postcodes do you cover, from The Broadway to Woodham Lane?

All of New Haw, which is KT15. That includes the streets off Woodham Lane and Scotland Bridge Road, The Avenue, Heron Way, the homes near The Broadway, and the roads down towards Heathervale Park and Woodham Junction. We cross the London boundary every day, so a Surrey address makes no difference to the price or the booking.

Is parking a problem for your van near The Broadway in New Haw?

Mostly no. Away from The Broadway nearly every house has a drive or kerb space, so we park close to the door. The streets near the station fill on weekdays, since it has no car park. If your road is tight, tell us when you book and we plan around it.

Do you get out muddy marks from the towpath and gardens?

Yes, that is one of the commonest jobs here. With the Wey Navigation, the Basingstoke Canal towpath and Heathervale Park all close by, ground-in mud on hall, stair and lounge carpets is routine. We lift the loose soil first, then hot-water extract the staining out, so it is flushed away and never scrubbed deeper into the pile.

How long will carpets take to dry in a New Haw semi?

Most fitted carpets are dry within 6 to 7 hours, because we set the machine to leave as little moisture behind as it can. Heavy wool, a thick underlay or a cold day can stretch that. In a bungalow or a three-bedroom semi alike, open a window and put the heating on low, and we tell you what to expect before we start.

Is a bungalow cheaper to clean with no stairs?

It is, because we price by the room and only charge for stairs where there are some. A two-bedroom bungalow with its living room comes to £115, and a three-bedroom one with a through-lounge is £169. If a loft has been converted with its own staircase, that flight is added at £41.

We have a wool rug the dog was sick on. Can it be cleaned at home?

Yes. We clean it in your home during the visit: vacuum it, pre-treat the stain, then shampoo and rinse it by hot-water extraction. Wool takes longer to dry than a synthetic, so we tell you what to expect before we leave. If the stain has set into the dye, we say what we expect to lift before we start.

Every clean comes with our re-clean guarantee: if a treated area is not right, we come back and put it right. We are fully insured and DBS-checked, and we have been cleaning carpets, upholstery and rugs across Surrey and London since 2009.

Coffee got knocked over the lounge carpet one morning and went right in. The gentleman treated it and there's no trace left at all. Careful round the skirting and lovely manners. Very pleased with it.

Fabric corner sofa where the kids sprawl after school. Felt tip on a cushion and mucky arms all cleaned off, looks fresh again. Respectful in the home and left the lounge spotless. Fair price too.

Had the bedroom carpet done before our daughter came home for a fortnight. A grubby patch by the door has lifted right out and it feels fresher. Quiet, tidy and respectful of the house. Thoroughly recommend.

Lined curtains in the sitting room had gone musty over winter. Cleaned on the rail with no shrinking and they hang lovely now. Polite young man and very reasonable. Will use them again.

Nice job on a wool rug from the bedroom that the cat had been sick on. The smell has gone. Took a couple of days longer to come back than I thought it would, though they did phone to explain, so not a big deal.

Stairs cleaned up well, the muddy marks from the garden have gone. He was a bit later than booked with the traffic, but he called ahead to warn me and the work was first rate once he got going.
