Newyears Green is a green-belt hamlet of only a handful of houses, strung along one narrow, winding lane between Bayhurst Wood and the Harefield tip. London Carpet Cleaning plans every visit here around that lane, leaves early and rings when we are close. We clean across Newyears Green, UB9, from £36 a room, and carpets are dry within 6 to 7 hours.

Farms, cottages and one long lane
Newyears Green sits in the north-west corner of Hillingdon, south-east of Harefield, west of Ruislip and north of Ickenham. The name is old. It is already marked on Roque’s map of Middlesex in 1754, and it is thought to come from the main farm, though nobody knows where the farm got it. There are only a handful of proper houses out here, set in pairs along Newyears Green Lane and Breakspear Road, with working farms and paddocks between them and the Colne Valley beyond. Springwell Lane, Hill End Road and Old Uxbridge Road feed off the same quiet network of lanes.
The homes are mostly older detached and semi-detached houses on their own plots, and the carpet inside tends to be wool or a heavier wool mix, laid in the hall, the dining room and the bedrooms. Bayhurst Wood Country Park is on the doorstep. It is part of the Ruislip Woods National Nature Reserve, ancient semi-natural woodland of hornbeam coppice, oak and beech, and Hillingdon Council manages it. The nearest station is West Ruislip, a little over a mile off, where the Central line ends and Chiltern Railways runs in to Marylebone; Denham, on the Chiltern main line, is about the same distance the other way.
Newyears Green in the census
| Homes that are | Share |
|---|---|
| Semi-detached houses | 37.8% |
| Detached houses | 15.5% |
| Owned outright | 33.0% |
| Rented from the council or a housing association | 20.1% |
| Three-bedroom homes | 37.4% |
| Built 1945 to 1972 | 41.5% |
A hamlet this small has no census figures of its own. The nearest unit the ONS uses is the neighbourhood around Harefield village, and Newyears Green sits at its southern edge, so the numbers lean towards the village and its post-war estates. The biggest building period in the VOA count is 1945 to 1972, at 41.5%, and that is mostly Harefield. The cottages and farmhouses on the lane belong to the smaller group built before 1919, at 10.6%.
Even so, the shape holds out here. Three homes in four are houses, and the semi is the commonest type at 37.8%, with detached houses another 15.5%. A third of households (33.0%) own the house outright, which usually means a long stay and a carpet that has been down for years. Three bedrooms is the most common size (37.4%), so the usual booking is the bedrooms, the lounge and one flight of stairs. For a three-bed semi with a through-lounge and the staircase, the bill is £210. Only 1.2% of homes have no central heating; with the radiators on low a wool carpet dries on time, even in a wet February. A farmhouse with thick walls and a stone floor in the hall holds the cold, so there we leave a window open and the air moving before we go.

Mud from the fields, grit at the back door
The job here is almost always about the outdoors coming in. With fields, bridleways and woodland round every house, dog paws and walking boots carry a steady film of mud into entrance halls and lounges, and that grit is what wears a wool pile flat over a winter. We hot-water extract to pull it out of the base of the pile, where a vacuum never reaches. We also see a fair bit of leather furniture that has dried out and gone tired on the seat cushions, which we clean and feed so it softens again, and plenty of wool rugs that we clean in place after a muddy spell.
There is one limit, and we tell you at the start. Where a wool carpet by a busy back door has been ground down by years of grit, cleaning lifts the dirt and brightens the colour, but it cannot put back fibre that has already worn away. The traffic lane will come up much cleaner and still read as the oldest part of the room.
The lane, the tip queue and the van
Newyears Green Lane is single-track in places, with no pavement and few house numbers on show. There is no controlled parking zone and no estate barrier out here, and most houses have a drive or a gravel apron, so the van pulls on and the hose runs straight to the front door.
What changes our timing is the tip. Hillingdon’s Harefield civic amenity site is on New Years Green Lane itself, open from 8am to 4pm every day with last entry at 3.45pm. The council says queues there can average around an hour and a half at the busiest times; it asks drivers not to turn right into the lane from Harvil Road, and to join the queue coming down from Harefield. It names 11am to midday as a busy spell and Wednesdays and Thursdays as the quieter days. So we approach from the Harefield end like everyone else, favour an early start or a midweek slot, and allow extra minutes on a Saturday. Before we arrive, clear boots and dog beds off the hall floor, and if the dogs can stay in the garden or a back room while we work, the clean carpet stays that way.

Carpets, leather suites and rugs out by the woods
Most bookings here are hot-water extraction carpet cleaning for the hall, the stairs and the lounge, the rooms that take the brunt of the mud. We also clean fabric and leather suites through our upholstery cleaning service, the kind of corner sofa where the grandchildren have ground in biscuits and juice, and we clean wool and natural-fibre pieces in the home under rug cleaning, with the marks pre-treated first. For the rest of Hillingdon, the same team works Harefield and Denham just along the lane.
Questions we get from the lane
Do you cover all of the UB9 postcode?
Yes. We cover the whole of UB9 6, including Newyears Green Lane, Breakspear Road North and South, Hill End Road, Springwell Lane and Old Uxbridge Road, and we carry on into Harefield and Denham. Newyears Green is a small hamlet, so we batch nearby bookings together where we can.
The lane is hard to find. Will you still turn up on time?
We plan for it. Newyears Green Lane is single-track in places with no pavement and no house numbers on view, so we set off early and ring you when we are a couple of minutes away. Our drivers know the woods and the farm entrances, so getting lost is rare.
My dogs bring in mud from the fields. What can you actually do?
Quite a lot. Dried mud and grit sit deep in the pile, so we pre-treat the worst patches, agitate them and then hot-water extract to flush the dirt out at the base. Lounges and hallways that have taken a winter of paw prints usually come up far fresher than owners expect.
How long do the carpets stay wet afterwards?
Most carpets are dry within 6 to 7 hours, and we run an air mover over the heaviest areas before we leave. Wool holds a little more moisture than synthetic, so on a damp day we suggest opening a window and keeping pets off the lounge until it feels dry underfoot.
Will the queue for the tip hold you up?
It can, so we plan round it. The council says the queue for the Harefield site on New Years Green Lane can average around an hour and a half at its busiest, and it asks drivers to come down from the Harefield end. We do the same, and we offer early or midweek slots, when the lane is calmer. If we are ever running behind, we ring you before the slot starts.
Our wool carpet has been down for twenty years. Is it worth cleaning?
Usually, yes. A good wool carpet that has been looked after will take a deep clean well, and years of grit coming out of the base of the pile often lifts the colour by a shade or two. We look at it first. If the traffic lane has worn through to the backing, we say so before we start, and you decide whether to clean it or save the money towards a new one.
Every clean comes with our re-clean guarantee: if a spot you pointed out lifts but is not right, we come back and put it straight. We are fully insured and DBS-checked, and we have cleaned carpets, sofas and rugs across Newyears Green and the rest of Hillingdon since 2009.
