More than 4.6 million journeys started or ended at Norwood Junction in 2024 to 2025, and the Victorian and Edwardian terraces on both sides of the line were built because of it. London Carpet Cleaning has worked around Norwood Junction, SE25, since 2009. Prices start from £36 a room, and most carpets are dry within 6 to 7 hours.

Station first, suburb second
The railway made this place. A station called Jolly Sailor opened here in 1839, was renamed Norwood in 1846, moved to its present site in 1859 and became Norwood Junction in 1910. Today it sits in fare zone 4 and is an interchange for the Windrush line of the London Overground, with Southern and Thameslink trains alongside, from six platforms.
When the station moved in 1859, shops followed it. The High Street went from fifteen shops in 1861 to sixty by 1872, and the town grew as two halves either side of the line. The Grade II clock tower at the junction of Station Road and Selhurst Road went up in 1907, paid for by local people to mark William Stanley’s golden wedding; its cast-iron clock came from Gillett and Johnston, the Croydon clockmakers. Most of the housing round it is Victorian and Edwardian terrace, built as the station turned South Norwood into a railway suburb. Albert Road, laid out in 1855 on land once called Frog Island, follows the curve of the old Croydon Canal, and on Albert Road is the main entrance to South Norwood Country Park: 116 acres with wet grassland and a lake, on what was Croydon’s sewage farm for about a century, opened as a park in 1989.
What does the census show around the station?
| Homes | Share |
|---|---|
| Terraced houses | 36.9% |
| Semi-detached houses | 24.1% |
| Built before 1919 | 37.1% |
| Built 1973 to 1999 | 23.2% |
| Three bedrooms | 38.1% |
| Socially rented | 27.0% |
| Shared ownership | 2.7% |
The census does not use the name Norwood Junction. This page falls in the area it calls Woodside & Ashburton (Croydon 014), in Woodside ward. It is a house-and-stairs neighbourhood: terraces make up 36.9% of homes and semis 24.1%, and three-bedroom homes are the largest group at 38.1%. Over a third of homes (37.1%) are older than 1919, the terraces near the station, but a sizeable 23.2% were built between 1973 and 1999, so the carpet we meet ranges from old wool on a steep Victorian flight to tough synthetic in a 1980s house.
Renting is mixed. Social tenants rent 27.0% of homes, and another 2.7% are in shared ownership. For a three-bed terrace near the station, three bedrooms (£108), the through-lounge (£61) and one flight of stairs (£41) add up to £210.

Worn stair strips and spilled coffee
The work here is heavy-use family carpet. We get a lot of stair runs with a worn, grubby strip down the middle and a mystery stain on the bottom step, the way stairs go in a busy terrace. Spills are the other constant, coffee on a cream front-room pile or red wine on a dining-room rug. Most of that lifts cleanly with hot-water extraction, and old pet odour in a corner sofa normally clears once the fabric is properly flushed and dried. Pen is the one we warn people about, and there is more on that below.

Kerb space near a busy interchange
The roads nearest the station sit inside Croydon’s South Norwood controlled parking zone, with the hours on the signs where you enter it, and visitors pay through RingGo. With millions of passengers a year using the station, and terraces built long before cars, the kerb near the line fills up in the working day. Further out towards Woodside and the Country Park, most streets are unrestricted and we park outside.
We plan around it. Tell us the road when you book, and for streets close to the station an early start or a Saturday slot usually puts the van nearer the door; otherwise we carry from the nearest space. Inside, the Victorian houses have steep, narrow stairs, so clear the treads and the landing before we arrive. If you live by the Country Park, keep the dog off the carpet until it has dried, 6 to 7 hours after we finish, since wet paws from the park undo a clean fast.
Steam cleaning, upholstery and rugs
For carpets and stairs we use hot-water extraction, the method most people mean by steam carpet cleaning, which rinses the detergent back out so the pile dries fast and does not re-soil. Sofas, armchairs and mattresses come under our upholstery cleaning, worked by hand to suit the fabric. Wool and delicate rugs get rug cleaning in the home, and a heavy red-wine stain in the middle of a good rug is pre-treated first, with a photo of anything old so we can say whether it is safe on site. We cover the rest of Croydon on the same fixed prices, along with nearby Crystal Palace and Penge.
Norwood Junction booking questions
Do you cover both sides of the railway at Norwood Junction, SE25?
Yes, all of SE25 on both sides of the station, from Portland Road, Oliver Avenue and Clifford Road through to Cargreen Road, Sunny Bank and Albert Road by the Country Park. If you are just over into Croydon or toward Crystal Palace we still come out, and the price stays the same for being a little further from the High Street.
Is parking a problem for the van on these terraced roads?
It can be tight. Several roads sit inside the South Norwood permit zone, and the terraces near the station have no driveways, so kerb space fills up by day. We are used to it. Tell us the road when you book and we will plan the van; a short carry from a nearby space works fine, so we do not need a spot right outside.
How long do carpets take to dry on Norwood Junction’s London clay?
Plan on 6 to 7 hours for most rooms to dry. The ground under the house makes little difference; the room does. A cold ground-floor room facing the garden, or a day with the windows shut, can run to the longer end, and mattresses take about 24 hours. Opening a window and a quick pass with a fan speeds it all up.
Can you get pet smells out of a fabric sofa?
Usually, yes. With the dog’s favourite corner the smell is down in the cushion and the fabric, not sitting on the surface, so we flush it through with upholstery extraction and do not just spray over the top. Once it is properly rinsed and dried the doggy note goes, and the sofa looks lifted at the same time. Bad cases can need a second visit, which we will say upfront.
Will felt-tip and biro come out of the landing carpet?
Mostly. Felt-tip and biro from small hands usually fade a long way with the right pre-treatment, but they do not always vanish completely, especially on a pale wool pile where the ink has had weeks to settle. We test the mark first and tell you on the doorstep what to expect, so there are no surprises when the carpet dries.
Can you clean just the stairs and the landing?
Yes, and in the terraces round the station it is one of our commonest small bookings. A flight is priced from £41, and we quote the landing with it before we start. The stair tool reaches the edges and the nose of each tread, where the grey line builds up. It is a short visit; keep everyone off the treads until they are dry, which takes up to 6 to 7 hours.
Every clean is backed by our re-clean guarantee: if a treated area does not come up right, we come back and put it right at no charge. We are fully insured and DBS-checked, and we have cleaned across South Norwood and the rest of Croydon since 2009.
