What Osterley and Spring Grove homes are like
This is one of the older planned suburbs in west London. Spring Grove was laid out as a grand Victorian estate from the 1850s, and Osterley Road, Thornbury Road and Eversley Crescent were drawn up by the middle of that decade for detached Italianate villas with deep gardens. Much of that survives inside the Spring Grove conservation area, alongside Arts and Crafts semis from the turn of the century. The gaps filled in during the 1920s and 1930s building boom, so the rest of TW7 runs to bay-fronted semi-detached houses, the kind the 2011 census counted at roughly 1,900 across the ward, plus close to 2,000 flats.
The shape of the place is set by two stations. Osterley underground, a brick tower topped with a concrete fin designed under Charles Holden and opened in 1934, sits on the Great West Road on the Piccadilly line, and replaced the older Osterley and Spring Grove halt that once stood on Thornbury Road. Syon Lane station, a few minutes east, runs into Waterloo. A cleaner here passes Osterley Park, the National Trust house remodelled by Robert Adam, and the floodlit Gillette clock tower at Gillette Corner, the western marker of the Golden Mile.
