Surrey have played at the Oval since 1845, and in September 1880 the ground staged the first Test match in England. The streets around it mix Georgian terraces with the new homes of the Oval Quarter. London Carpet Cleaning has cleaned around Oval, SW9, since 2009. Rooms start at £36, and a cleaned carpet is dry within 6 to 7 hours.

From Georgian terraces to the gasholder flats

Oval sits in the north of Lambeth, gathered round the Kia Oval. The tube station on the Morden branch of the Northern line stands where Clapham Road meets Camberwell New Road, and most of the housing within a few minutes of it is period. Hackford Road keeps a Georgian terrace inside a small conservation area, first designated in 1974. Number 87 is where a young Vincent van Gogh lodged from August 1873 to September 1874; the house was restored and opened to visitors in 2019. Fentiman Road and Vassall Road have their own runs of early Victorian terraces, and the tall four and five-storey townhouses on Camberwell New Road and Clapham Road have mostly become conversion flats, often with a garden or lower-ground flat at the bottom.

The new homes are just as much a part of Oval now. The Oval Quarter, the rebuilt Myatts Field North estate off the Camberwell New Road end, was finished in 2017 with 808 new homes and 172 refurbished ones, all carpeted in the pale, short pile that comes as standard. Beside the cricket ground, the Victorian gasholder was listed Grade II in March 2016 and is being turned into 200 homes inside its iron frame, with the first expected in 2028. Two very different jobs sit a few streets apart, sometimes on the same morning.

Parking near the cricket ground

Harleyford Road, which runs along the south side of the ground, and Camberwell New Road both carry the A202, a red route that Transport for London manages from end to end. We cannot stop on either to unload, so on those frontages we park in the nearest side street and walk the kit round. The side streets are permit-controlled, and in Lambeth’s zones a single yellow line is usually controlled from 8.30am to 6pm, Monday to Saturday, with the exact hours on the plate by each bay.

Match days change the picture. When a Test or a big county game is on, the pavements by the ground fill early and the side streets fill with them, so if your date falls on one we will offer you the day before or after. The lower-ground flats in the townhouses mean steps down from the street to a front area; we carry the machine down by hand, and a clear path past the bins saves ten minutes. Basement rooms hold damp and dry more slowly than an upstairs room, so in winter we book them first thing.

The census does not draw a line round Oval itself. The area holding this page’s point runs west from Fentiman Road to Vauxhall station, so it takes in the new riverside blocks, and that is why more than half its homes (52.8%) date from 2000 or later. The older stock is still there: 22.7% of homes were built before 1900, and one in six (16.6%) is a flat inside a converted house, with a shared hall and a stair carpet everyone uses.

Private renting is high at 43.0%, so the move-out clean is the job we do most around here, timed for the day before a check-out. One-bed homes make up 35.9%, often a bedroom and a living room and nothing more. Where a townhouse is still one home, three bedrooms, the front room and a flight of stairs come to £192. The figure to watch for drying is the 4.2% of homes with no central heating; in one of those flats we leave a window open and ask you to stay off the carpet a little longer.

Wool terraces and new-build carpet, one van

The same van handles the lot. Our hot-water carpet cleaning suits the wool in the terraces and the synthetic carpet in the flats alike; we turn the moisture down for wool and up for a hard-wearing new-build pile. For the fabric three-seaters and conditioned leather that come up again and again on Vassall Road and the Brixton Road end, there is sofa and upholstery cleaning. Loose rugs we clean in the room, which is how the red-wine jobs off Hackford Road tend to go. We also work right across the rest of Lambeth, and you can reach us in neighbouring Stockwell and Brixton on the same fixed prices.

Oval questions from tenants and owners

Which streets around the Oval do you cover, from Vassall Road to Fentiman Road?

The whole of Oval and its edges, across three postcodes. That means SW9 around Vassall Road and Hackford Road and the SW8 side towards Fentiman Road and Bonnington Square, plus the SE11 streets by Camberwell New Road, the Oval Quarter included. If you can walk to the Kia Oval or the tube in a few minutes, you are inside our patch.

Is parking a problem on the conservation terraces?

The period streets are permit-only during the controlled hours, but it is no obstacle for us. Tell us the road when you book and we will plan a short stay or a visitor bay. If you live on Harleyford Road or Camberwell New Road, both red routes, we park round the corner and carry the kit in.

Do you do end-of-tenancy carpet cleans near the Northern line?

Often. With 43.0% of homes in this census area rented privately, the flats around Clapham Road and the Oval tube turn over all year. We give a dated receipt that lists the rooms done, which is what most letting agents along here want to see before they release a deposit.

How long do carpets take to dry after cleaning?

An upstairs room in one of the terraces is usually dry within 6 to 7 hours, and until then it is socks, not shoes. Open a window and the airflow does the rest. Thick wool, or a ground-floor flat with less through-draught, can take a little longer, so we will tell you on the day what to expect for your room.

Should I avoid booking on a match day at the Oval?

If you live within a street or two of the ground, yes, where you can. On a Test or a big county day the side streets fill early and the pavements are busy with people walking to the gates, which makes carrying the machine in slower. We can still do it, but the day before or after is easier for everyone, and the price is the same.

Can you get the machine down to a lower-ground flat?

Yes. Most lower-ground flats in the Oval townhouses are reached down a short flight of steps from the street, and we carry the machine down by hand. The hose runs back up the steps to the van, and where the van cannot sit close we bring a longer one. Leave the front area clear of bikes and bins and we start on time.

The re-clean guarantee covers every job here: a treated mark that reappears gets a free return visit. Our cleaners are DBS-checked, the business is fully insured, and we have worked across Oval and the rest of Lambeth since 2009.

What our customers say in Oval.

★★★★★
Had the lounge done before a big family Sunday lunch. My grandson had ground a chocolate biscuit into the carpet the week before and it's completely gone. The chap was lovely, very respectful, and left it barely damp. Thank you.

Cleaned our fabric three seater that had a bad coffee spill down one cushion and general grime. Looks like new and smells fresh. Easy to book and right on time.

Our black leather sofa was sticky and looking worn. They cleaned and conditioned it and it feels soft and looks shiny again. Took about an hour and the price was fair. Very happy.

Used them for the carpets at the end of my tenancy near Clapham Road. They did a proper job and I got my full deposit back. Only gripe is the booking got moved a day at short notice, but they were apologetic and the cleaning itself was first rate.

Cleaned the bedrooms and the hall which were looking dingy. They came up much fresher and a juice stain in my daughter's room lifted out. The drying took a fair bit longer than the couple of hours he mentioned so we kept off it overnight, but the job was good and he was polite.
