In 1921 Perivale had 114 residents; by 1951 it had almost 10,000, most of them in the bay-fronted semis and terraces put up in the 1930s around Medway Drive, Colwyn Avenue and Bilton Road. London Carpet Cleaning covers Perivale, UB6, from the Medway Estate to the canal. Prices start at £36 a room, and carpets are dry within 6 to 7 hours.

A suburb built in one decade
Before the 1930s Perivale was one of the smallest parishes in Middlesex: a medieval church and a handful of farmhouses among fields of hay for the London market. Then Western Avenue cut through it, the factories came, and the houses followed. Sanderson’s wallpaper works opened in 1929 and the Hoover factory, the Art Deco building on the north side of the A40, in 1932. Percy Bilton laid out much of the housing and Taylor Woodrow built a large share of it, so the streets share the same bones: bay-fronted semis and short terraces with a hall, a front room, a through-lounge, front and back gardens, and a side garage on many plots. Shops are on Medway Parade, inside the Medway Estate, and along Bilton Road.
Perivale station sits on Horsenden Lane South in the middle of it all. Brian Lewis designed it in 1938, and it finally opened in June 1947 with its curved glass front and concrete canopy; it has been Grade II listed since 2011. Horsenden Hill rises to the north, with the Grand Union Canal along its foot. South of Western Avenue, St Mary’s church stands off Perivale Lane, and beyond it the River Brent runs past Perivale Park and Pear Tree Park, the 49-acre park that replaced the municipal golf course in 2024. Around 5,000 trees went in there in 2025.
How much of Perivale is 1930s?
| Homes that are | Share |
|---|---|
| Built 1919 to 1944 | 83.5% |
| Semi-detached houses | 38.0% |
| Terraced houses | 38.1% |
| Three bedrooms | 51.8% |
| Four or more bedrooms | 20.6% |
| Rented privately | 33.8% |
Almost all of it. The census area for this page is the one around Bilton Road, on the eastern side of Perivale, and in the VOA count 83.5% of its homes date from 1919 to 1944. Barely any (0.4%) come from the post-war decades. Semis and terraces are level at 38.0% and 38.1%, and more than half of all homes (51.8%) have three bedrooms, with another 20.6% at four or more. A carpet job here nearly always includes a staircase. Three bedrooms, the knocked-through lounge and the stairs of a Medway Estate semi add up to £210.
Ownership is mixed. A third of homes (33.8%) are rented privately, many of them family houses let whole, so we split our Perivale work between owners refreshing carpet that has been down twenty years and landlords turning a house round between tenants. Flats are few here, 19.0% of homes in all. Central heating is near universal (only 1.9% of homes lack it), so with the radiators on low a cleaned carpet dries on time even in winter.

Family wear on 1930s floors
The pattern here is family wear on carpet that has done twenty or thirty years of service. Hall, stairs and landing take the worst of it, because in a semi that is the one route everyone uses, and the stair carpet on the older estates comes up much fresher once the trodden grey lifts. Our hot-water extraction method, better known as steam carpet cleaning, does the floors, and it is what keeps drying to 6 to 7 hours. On the oldest carpets, years of feet flatten and abrade the pile; a clean lifts the dirt and revives the colour but will not put back fibre that has worn thin, and we tell you which is dirt and which is wear before we start.
We get a steady run of pet work too: dog hair and the faint dog smell out of fabric sofas, and the odd tea or coffee spill on a wool rug. The same machine handles upholstery cleaning for fabric corner sofas, and cream leather settees that have gone dull we clean and condition by hand. Wool and delicate pieces get proper rug cleaning in the home, and a photo of an old one first lets us say if it is safe on site. Outside UB6, we cover the rest of Ealing on the same fixed prices, and neighbouring Greenford just up the road.

Parking, the station zone and the A40
Most Perivale semis have a drive or an open kerb outside, so the van usually sits a few metres from your door. The exception is the grid of roads round the station. Ealing’s zone P covers Bideford Avenue, Dawlish Avenue, Tavistock Avenue, Teignmouth Gardens, Horsenden Lane South (numbers 20 to 184) and part of Colwyn Avenue (even numbers 44 to 60), but it only runs Monday to Friday, 9am to 10am and 2pm to 3pm. A small zone, PL, covers a few houses on Perivale Lane and Old Church Lane from 10am to 11am and 3pm to 4pm on weekdays. Outside those hours anyone can park.
The A40 is the other thing to plan round. We come along Western Avenue most days, and at rush hour the Hanger Lane end can hold us up, so if traffic is bad we ring ahead. Before we arrive, clear the hall of shoes and coats and lift anything stored on the stairs. Leave the through-lounge door open so the hose can run straight through.
Perivale customers often ask
Which Perivale streets do you cover, from the Medway Estate to Bilton Road?
All of UB6 on the Perivale side: the Medway Estate, the roads off Bilton Road, the streets round the station, and everything between the A40 and Horsenden Hill, plus the houses south of Western Avenue towards Perivale Lane. We are along Western Avenue often, past the Hoover Building, so we reach Perivale most days and can usually fit a job in within the week.
Is parking a problem for the van on the estates?
Rarely. The 1930s semis around Medway Drive and most of Colwyn Avenue have their own drives or free kerbs, so we pull up close and run the hose straight in. If the A40 is slow at rush hour, we ring ahead and give you a new arrival time.
Can you get pet smells and hair out of a fabric sofa?
Usually, yes. Dog hair and surface odour lift well with a deep upholstery clean and a light deodoriser, which suits the many households here walking dogs on Horsenden Hill and along the canal. Odour that has soaked through to the foam is harder, and we say so on the day before charging you for it.
How long do carpets take to dry in a Perivale through-lounge?
Most carpets are dry within 6 to 7 hours, because hot-water extraction pulls the bulk of the moisture back out. Heavy stair carpet or a dense wool rug can want a little longer. Open a window or leave the heating ticking over and a morning clean leaves the through-lounge dry for the evening.
I live by the station, in zone P. Do you need a permit?
Only if you book us inside the two controlled hours. Zone P runs Monday to Friday from 9am to 10am and again from 2pm to 3pm, with no controls at weekends. We usually arrive after 10am, park outside and keep going straight through the afternoon window with a visitor permit from you, or move the van to an unrestricted road nearby for that hour.
We rent our house. Can the receipt go to the landlord or agent?
Yes. A third of homes in this part of Perivale are rented privately, and plenty of our bookings are paid by a landlord or a letting agent. Tell us who is paying when you book. We clean as normal, take a note of any marks that will not lift, and address a dated receipt to them, which is what the check-out clerk will ask for.
Every clean carries our re-clean guarantee: if a spot comes back, we return and put it right at no charge. We are fully insured and DBS-checked, and we have cleaned carpets, sofas and rugs across Perivale and the rest of Ealing since 2009.
