What Poplar homes are like
Poplar is council-estate London first and foremost, much of it rebuilt after the war. The Lansbury Estate, north of East India Dock Road, went up for the 1951 Festival of Britain as a live exhibition of how a neighbourhood should be planned, and it set the pattern: low brick terraces and walk-up maisonettes around Chrisp Street Market and its Festival clocktower. West of there the Will Crooks Estate from the late 1930s runs to a neat neo-Georgian style with tall sash windows. Then there is the Brutalist layer, Ernő Goldfinger’s Balfron Tower on the Brownfield Estate and the long balcony blocks that replaced Robin Hood Gardens, all concrete decks and access walkways.
The newer flats sit on top of all that. Aberfeldy Village around Aberfeldy Street has been rebuilding the East India Dock end for years, and the Chrisp Street regeneration is adding hundreds more homes by All Saints DLR. So a round here can run from a 1950s maisonette to a handover-clean in a flat finished last year. Getting around is the DLR, not the Tube, with All Saints, Poplar, Langdon Park, Blackwall and East India all inside the postcode, and Bartlett Park giving the estates their bit of green.

Can you park on the estates and access the blocks?
Poplar sits in Tower Hamlets parking zone B, controlled Monday to Friday, so a resident bay or a visitor space usually works, and on the estates we use the marked parking near the block. The machine stays in the van and we run the hose in, so a balcony-deck flat or an upper floor is no problem.
Do you clear the smell after a spill as well as the stain?
Yes. Milky tea, milk and similar spills turn sour as they dry, and the odour is the real complaint. We rinse the area thoroughly to flush the residue out of the backing instead of dabbing the surface, which is what clears the smell as well as the mark on most fresh spills.
