Hurlingham Court went up in 1895 as four mansion blocks between the Hurlingham Club and the station, with long communal stairs and, today, a day porter. London Carpet Cleaning has cleaned the flats and terraces of Putney Bridge, SW6, on the Fulham bank of the river, since 2009. Rooms cost from £36, and a cleaned carpet here is usually dry within 6 to 7 hours.

Is Putney Bridge in Putney or Fulham?

Fulham. Despite the name, this corner of SW6 sits on the north bank, in Hammersmith and Fulham, and Putney itself is over the water. The first crossing here was a timber toll bridge called Fulham Bridge, opened in 1729; the stone bridge that carries the traffic now was designed by Sir Joseph Bazalgette and opened in 1886. A medieval parish church stands at each end of it, All Saints on the Fulham side and St Mary’s in Putney, and the Boat Race starts on this reach, just upstream.

The station opened in 1880 as Putney Bridge and Fulham, took its present name in 1932, and is the last District line stop before the track crosses the Thames. It opens beside Fulham High Street and the New King’s Road. A Second World War pillbox still stands at the end of the southbound platform.

Mansion flats by the water, terraces behind

The housing splits two ways. Along the river are the big Victorian mansion blocks, Hurlingham Court chief among them, with high ceilings and long common stairs. Step back from the water and you are into tight Victorian terraces on streets like Broomhouse Road and Quarrendon Street, many with the original fitted runner still on a steep staircase. Bishop’s Park, registered Grade II and lined with plane trees, runs the riverbank past the church tower, which makes this one of the greener pockets of Fulham.

Flats outnumber houses by more than two to one here (68.2% against 31.8%), and more than half of all homes have one or two bedrooms. For us that means a lot of compact jobs in tall buildings: the living room and bedrooms of a mansion flat, with the kit going up in a lift or by the common stair. Fewer than half of households own their home (48.0%), so tenancy changes are a regular booking near the station.

The age of the stock matters as much as its shape. Only 4.3% of homes were built this century and 8.3% in the post-war decades, so nearly everything here is older, and most floors have had a carpet down for years. The terraces behind the river are where the stairs come in. On Quarrendon Street a three-bed terrace with its front room and one flight of stairs is a £192 job.

Porters, school runs and traffic cameras

In the mansion blocks, the porter is the first call. Hurlingham Court has a day porter and lifts, and in a block like that the porter wants to know the day and where we will load. Tell us the block and the flat number when you book and we ring ahead on the day.

The terraces have their own timing. Clancarty Road has a school, and Hammersmith and Fulham has put a Clean Air Neighbourhood camera on it, west of the school entrance, with others on Peterborough Road and the side streets, to stop out-of-borough drivers cutting between New King’s Road and Wandsworth Bridge Road. We reach every street from those two main roads, so the cameras do not stop us; we simply avoid the school-run half hour at either end of the day. If our route does need to pass a camera, any H&F resident can book tradespeople through it with a Resident Visitor Permit on RingGo.

On the steep terrace staircases we start at the top landing and work down, so nobody walks on a clean, wet tread. Move shoes and the bike out of the hall and we can begin straight away.

What the river does to carpets here

The mansion flats and the terraces give us two different jobs. In the period blocks near the bridge it is wool carpet gone flat and grey in the bay window where the light sits, and hall runners worn down by dogs coming back muddy from Bishop’s Park. In the terraces it is the staircase, almost always: a coffee or wine splash partway up and a general grubbiness in the edges that vacuuming never reaches. Hot-water extraction lifts what will lift, and the carpet dries within 6 to 7 hours. One limit we always mention. On old wool truly faded by years of sun off the river, cleaning brings back the depth of colour but will not reverse sun-bleaching, and we say so on the doorstep before we start.

One van for carpets, sofas and rugs

The same van covers all of it. Our hot-water carpet cleaning suits the wool in the mansion blocks and the synthetic carpet in the terraces alike, while sofa and upholstery cleaning handles what comes with a supper party, red wine on pale linen being the classic. Antique and Persian pieces get specialist rug cleaning in the home once a photo has told us they are safe to clean on site. We cover the rest of Hammersmith and Fulham too, along with neighbouring Hurlingham and the wider Fulham streets.

Booking near the bridge: common questions

Do you cover Putney Bridge’s Fulham bank, from Hurlingham to Parsons Green?

Yes, the whole SW6 stretch on the Fulham bank: the mansion blocks on Ranelagh Gardens and Hurlingham Gardens by the river, the terraces around Doneraile Street and Clancarty Road, and on through Parsons Green and Walham Green. If you are not sure your road counts, ring and we will confirm in a minute.

Where will the van park when you come to Putney Bridge?

The streets here are controlled parking, with resident-permit and paid bays for most of the day, and we are used to it. We pay by phone and load in and out quickly. On Boat Race day, or when the bridge backs up, we ring ahead if we are running a few minutes late.

Can you handle an end-of-tenancy carpet clean for the deposit on my flat?

Yes, and with fewer than half of homes here owner-occupied, it is a steady part of the work near the station. We clean to the standard agents expect and email you a dated receipt for the inventory clerk, which is usually all the deposit scheme needs to see.

How long does a stair runner take to dry in a Putney Bridge terrace?

Most rooms take up to 6 to 7 hours, so a runner done in the morning is dry by the evening. Wool and a thick runner on the steep stairs of Broomhouse Road or Quarrendon Street hold a little more water and need a little longer, so use those stairs with socks on until they have dried. Low moisture and good airflow matter most in the older ground-floor flats that are slow to air.

Can you work in a mansion block with a porter and a lift?

Yes, it is most of our work by the river. We send the porter our van registration and arrival time and protect the lift floor on the way in. The hoses run along the wall, clear of the hall for other residents. If the building has its own rules on working hours, tell us and we book inside them.

We live on Clancarty Road. When is the best time for you to come?

Mid-morning or early afternoon. The school on Clancarty Road fills the street at drop-off and pick-up, and a Clean Air Neighbourhood camera sits on the road too, so we come in from New King’s Road or Wandsworth Bridge Road and avoid those windows. A 10am start on a weekday usually has the van outside and the hoses in within minutes.

Every clean comes with our re-clean guarantee: if a spot you flagged comes back, we return and sort it at no charge. We are fully insured and DBS-checked, and the same team has worked the streets by the bridge since 2009.

What our customers say in Putney Bridge.

★★★★★
Red wine went all over our pale linen sofa during a supper with neighbours, right across two cushions. I dabbed it and made it worse of course. He got every bit of it out and you would honestly never know. Polite, careful, on time.

Had the lounge and hallway done in our mansion flat near the bridge. The runner in the hall was filthy from the dog and the carpet by the window had faded marks. Both look wonderful now. Quick, tidy and reasonably priced for the area.

Our antique Persian rug in the drawing room had a candle wax spill right across the border from a dinner. I thought that was the end of it. They lifted it out completely and the colours look richer than before. Delighted, will use again.

Steep Victorian stairs with a fitted wool carpet that had a coffee splash halfway up and a general grubby look. He got right into every edge and corner without touching the paintwork. Looks like new and dried by the evening. Excellent job.

Moving out of the flat and the agent insisted on professional carpet cleaning for the deposit. They did a thorough job and provided a receipt. Did run about half an hour late because of traffic over the bridge, but they rang ahead to warn me so it was fine. Got the full deposit back.

Had both children's mattresses cleaned after a tummy bug went round the house. They came up fresh and any marks have faded right down. The quote crept up a little once he measured the larger one, but he was upfront about it before starting so no real grumble.
