What Regent’s Park Estate homes are like
This is a large postwar council estate, close to 2,000 homes across roughly 49 buildings, laid out in the 1950s on the sites of Cumberland Market, Clarence Gardens and Munster Square after the Blitz flattened Nash’s original streets. The Crown Estate sold the land to St Pancras Borough Council in 1951, and what went up is a mix you still see today: tower blocks named after the Lake District, such as Windermere, Coniston and Eskdale, alongside three-storey maisonettes and terraces in pinkish-purple brick around Clarence Gardens. The estate sits between Albany Street and Hampstead Road, with Robert Street running through the middle of it.
The nearest Underground is Great Portland Street on the corner of Albany Street and Marylebone Road, which puts the Circle, Hammersmith and City, and Metropolitan lines a short walk away, and Regent’s Park station on the Bakerloo line is close behind it. Regent’s Park itself is right on the western edge, and the old Cumberland Market allotments, once a canal basin, are still a green pocket in the middle of the blocks. It is Zone 1, but it lives like a settled residential estate rather than a busy high street.
