Shenfield is where the Elizabeth line ends its run east, and the streets around the station are lined with 1930s houses, including the Arts and Crafts style homes the local builder Jack Durston put up in Old Shenfield. Many still have good wool carpet on the stairs. London Carpet Cleaning has worked in Shenfield, CM15, since 2009, with prices from £36 a room, and a cleaned carpet is dry within 6 to 7 hours.

Commuter houses between the common and the station
Shenfield lies north-east of Brentwood town centre and has been part of Brentwood since 1934, when its civil parish was abolished. The Shenfield ward had 5,460 residents at the 2021 census. The parish church of St Mary the Virgin goes back to the 15th century, and the old parish reached as far as Shenfield Common, which was common land until 1881 and has been a public park since; it gives this side of town its green edge, and its paths send plenty of mud home on boots and paws.
The railway made the modern place. Shenfield station first opened in 1843, closed in 1850 and reopened in 1887, and today it is a Greater Anglia main-line stop for Chelmsford, Colchester and Liverpool Street as well as the Elizabeth line terminus. Most of the housing that grew around it is roomy inter-war and post-war family stock. Old Shenfield has private roads with 1930s Arts and Crafts houses, some on plots of half an acre, and bay-fronted semis and detached houses set the tone along roads such as Hutton Road, Worrin Road and Seven Arches Road. Next door is Hutton Mount, a private estate of big detached houses on tree-lined roads. Closer to the station there are blocks of flats.
Shenfield homes in figures
| Homes that are | Share |
|---|---|
| Owned, outright or with a mortgage | 84.9% |
| Semi-detached houses | 21.3% |
| Purpose-built flats | 10.3% |
| Rented privately | 13.3% |
| Three bedrooms | 24.5% |
| Built 1973 to 1999 | 15.5% |
| Built 2000 or later | 9.4% |
Shenfield shares its census area with Hutton Mount, so the big detached houses dominate the totals, and the Shenfield side shows in the smaller numbers. One home in ten (10.3%) is a purpose-built flat, and 13.3% of homes are let privately. Semis make up 21.3%. The rest of the building record is steady, with 15.5% of homes from 1973 to 1999 and 9.4% since 2000.
That gives us two kinds of booking. In the flats, a commuter couple or a tenant on the way out wants a quick, thorough clean: two bedrooms and the living room come to £115, done in a morning, with a receipt for the agent if there is one. In the houses, 84.9% of which are owner-occupied, the work is wool on the stairs and landings, dining rooms after a party, and rooms that have not been properly cleaned since the last redecoration. Heating is close to universal, with only 0.5% of homes going without, so a carpet dries in its usual 6 to 7 hours whatever the season.

Parking near the station
Hutton Road by the station is the tight spot. Its on-street bays are pay and display, Monday to Saturday from 8am to 6pm, with one free stay of up to two hours a day. On-street parking in Shenfield is enforced by Chelmsford City Council for the South Essex Parking Partnership, which also runs the residents’ permit scheme for roads with heavy commuter parking and issues one-day dispensation permits for vans working at a property. If your road is a permit street, tell us when you book and we sort the paperwork before the day.
Away from the station most homes have their own drive, and the van parks on it. In the bigger houses the stairs often turn at a half-landing, and we work into the edges and round the spindles by hand. Move shoes and bags off the stairs, and take ornaments off any small tables we might need to shift.
Spindles, wine rings and dry leather
The recurring Shenfield jobs are family-home jobs. Stairs and landings in the bigger houses take years of foot traffic and the odd coffee spill, and they need patient work. Lounge and dining carpets carry the marks of entertaining: an old red wine ring near a bay window, plaster dust trodden through after redecorating, jam and felt tip from visiting grandchildren. We also see a steady run of tired leather, such as the oxblood Chesterfield that has sat too long beside a radiator and dried out; we clean it and then feed it so the hide goes supple again. On an older wool stair carpet, a stain walked in for years may lift a long way without coming back to new, and we tell you on the doorstep which is dirt and which is permanent damage.

Fitted carpets, Chesterfields and wool rugs
Most Shenfield bookings are hot-water extraction, the deep steam carpet cleaning that rinses detergent and grit out of wool and synthetic pile and leaves it dry within 6 to 7 hours. For sofas and leather suites there is upholstery cleaning for fabric and a clean-and-feed for hide. Wool rugs get proper rug cleaning in the room, the same hot-water extraction that shifts deep dirt and pet smell from a large rug. We cover Havering and east London on the way out, plus nearby Brentwood and, further along the A12, Chelmsford.
Things Shenfield customers ask
Do you cover all of the CM15 area and Hutton Mount?
Yes. We cover all of Shenfield and the wider CM15 area, including Old Shenfield, the roads around the station and the private Hutton Mount estate, along with neighbouring Hutton. If your road is a managed or gated estate road, let us know any access arrangement when you book and we sort it in advance.
Is parking a problem near the station?
It can be. Around Hutton Road the commuter parking is busy, and on-street bays in central Shenfield are enforced by Chelmsford City Council under the South Essex Parking Partnership. Most homes here have their own drive, which makes it easy. On a permit street, a dispensation permit or a clear spot on the day is all our van needs.
Can you get a clean done before guests or Christmas?
That is a lot of what we do here: lounges, dining rooms and stair carpets freshened before an engagement party, Christmas or a family gathering. Carpets are dry within 6 to 7 hours, so a morning booking is walkable by the afternoon. Tell us your date and we book a slot that leaves the rooms ready in good time.
How do you clean a leather Chesterfield or fabric suite?
Fabric settees are cleaned by hot-water extraction with a fabric-safe pre-spray that lifts jam, felt tip and general grime, then dried fast. Leather is cleaned gently and then fed and conditioned, which brings life back to a dry oxblood or tan Chesterfield and helps protect the surface. Both are priced by the size of the piece.
Can you clean the shared stairs and landings in our block of flats?
Yes. Communal stair carpet in a block takes every resident’s feet and the grit from the station walk, and it greys long before the flats do. We clean it flight by flight, from £41 a flight, at a time that suits the residents. If a managing agent or the freeholder is paying, tell us when you book and we address the receipt to them.
The carpet by our bay window has faded. Will cleaning bring the colour back?
Cleaning brings back the colour that dirt has dulled, and that is often more than people expect. Sun fading is different: the light has broken down the dye in the fibre, so there is no colour left to recover. We show you the difference on the day by cleaning a small patch first. A blind or a rug moved round each season slows it down.
Should a mark we treated show again, we come back and clean it free under our re-clean guarantee. We are fully insured, our cleaners are DBS-checked, and we have cleaned carpets, sofas and rugs across Shenfield, Brentwood and east London since 2009.
