The Cage, a small round 18th-century lock-up with a domed top, still sits on the north bank of the pond in Shenley, inside the triangle of Rectory Lane, Pound Lane and London Road that was the medieval village. West of it, nearly 900 homes went up on the old hospital land at Porters Park. London Carpet Cleaning covers Shenley, WD7, from £36 a room, and carpets are dry within 6 to 7 hours.

Two villages under one postcode
Shenley is a linear village strung along London Road on a plateau in Hertfordshire, roughly fourteen miles from central London. The old part grew south from that triangle round the pond. Coaching inns such as the White Horse and the Black Lion served the road, and the village made bricks and tiles from its own clay from the 13th century on. When the railway reached Radlett in 1868 the population nearly doubled, and New Road was laid out at the south end in the last quarter of the century, lined with modest brick cottages. These older houses are where we find the wool carpets and the tight stair turns. The village was first made a conservation area in 1969.
The other half of Shenley is newer. In 1928 the Porters Park mansion and grounds were sold to Middlesex County Council, and Shenley Hospital opened there in 1934. It closed at the end of 1998, the land was sold for housing, and nearly 900 homes were built, while 45 acres were kept as Shenley Park, run by a trust since 1992. Roads like Porters Park Drive are mostly large family houses from that build, with off-street drives and fitted carpets now twenty-odd years old. Add the lanes off the main road, Rectory Lane, Black Lion Hill and Woodhall Lane, and a 1950s estate across the playing fields from Rectory Lane, and you have every age of house within a few hundred yards.
Shenley’s homes in the census
| Homes that are | Share |
|---|---|
| Detached houses | 31.2% |
| Terraced houses | 24.3% |
| Four or more bedrooms | 30.7% |
| Rented from a council or housing association | 18.2% |
| Built before 1919 | 16.6% |
| Built 1973 to 1999 | 42.4% |
The census groups Shenley with South Mimms, a few miles to the north-east, in one neighbourhood, so the numbers cover both villages. Houses make up 87.3% of homes and they split almost evenly three ways: detached 31.2%, semi-detached 31.8% and terraced 24.3%. Nearly a third have four bedrooms or more. A typical Porters Park booking is three bedrooms, the through-lounge and the stairs, and that comes to £210.
The age figures explain the carpets. The largest group of homes, 42.4%, was built between 1973 and 1999, so most of the carpets we clean here are in houses under fifty years old, where a synthetic or wool-mix pile is usual and cleans up quickly. At the other end, 16.6% of homes date from before 1919, which is the village core and the cottages on New Road and the old lanes, where the wool is older and the treads are narrower. Social renting is 18.2%, so we also clean between tenancies for housing association homes and their tenants.
Figures: ONS Census 2021 (Hertsmere 004) and VOA council tax stock, March 2024.
Clay mud, family lounges and old wool
The ground here is clay, with waterlogged soils on the plateau through the winter, and Shenley Park, the orchards and the open land round the cricket ground mean a lot of dog walking. Muddy paws and the occasional rolled-in mess on a hall runner are regulars. Clay mud is fine and sticky, and if it is walked in wet and left it stains the base of a pale pile, so we break it down with a pre-treatment before the rinse. Rugs like that are cleaned and deodorised in the house, with the clay pre-treated first.
The rest of the work splits along the same line as the housing. In the Porters Park family homes it is high-traffic lounges and stairs, plus the odd felt-tip or food spill where there are young children. In the older cottages it is aged wool that needs a gentle, wool-safe clean with less water. On tiled kitchens and utility rooms our grout clean lifts most of the grime, though grout that has gone grey by a back door over many years improves without always coming back to bright white. We say so before we start.
Getting to your door in Shenley
Shenley has no controlled parking zone. Hertsmere’s zones are in Radlett, Potters Bar, Borehamwood and Bushey, so there are no permits or visitor vouchers to arrange here. The Porters Park homes have their own drives, and we park on yours. In the old village, London Road has marked parking bays, and most of the cottages have space on the road or a short walk from it.
Two things help on the day. Shenley Junior School is on London Road, so on the stretch beside the schools we try to arrive after the morning drop-off. And on the narrow lanes such as Woodhall Lane, tell us whether the van can pull onto a drive, because we will not block the road with a hose. Clear the hall and the bottom of the stairs, lift anything stored under the beds, and the clean starts on time.

Sofas and rugs on the same trip
Most bookings here are hot-water extraction, what people call steam carpet cleaning, which rinses the pile and leaves it dry within 6 to 7 hours. We also clean sofas and armchairs through our upholstery cleaning service, handy for the fabric three-seaters that take a beating in a busy family room. Loose rugs, including wool and hall runners, are cleaned in the home through our rug cleaning. We run the same crews on into Radlett, just down the hill, and across the rest of Barnet on the London side of the boundary.
What Shenley customers ask
Do you actually cover Shenley, or just the London side?
We cover the whole village. Shenley is just over the boundary in Hertfordshire, and it sits on the same north London round we already drive, so there is no out-of-area surcharge. The full WD7 postcode is fine, from the London Road core to Porters Park and the lanes off it.
Where do you park when you visit?
It is easier than central London. The Porters Park homes have their own drives, and most of the older village houses have space on the road or a short walk from it. There is no resident permit zone to worry about. We bring our own water and power, so we only need to reach your door with the hose.
Can you clean older wool carpets in the village cottages?
Yes. Wool needs a controlled, wool-safe clean with no heavy soak, so we adjust the chemistry and the moisture and we keep drying times short. Older wool that has worn thin in a doorway or on a stair edge will look much fresher and cleaner, though real wear in the pile is permanent.
How long before the carpets are dry?
Usually 6 to 7 hours to dry, a little longer for a heavy wool lounge or a cold day. We finish with a strong extraction pass to pull out as much moisture as we can, and we will let you know if traffic on the M25 means we are running behind, so your day is not held up guessing.
Our Porters Park house still has the carpets it was built with. Is a clean worth it?
Usually, yes. A carpet laid when these houses went up has had more than twenty years of grit ground into it, and that grit cuts the fibres a little more each time someone walks on it. A hot-water clean takes it out and brings the colour back. Where the pile has gone flat on the stairs, cleaning lifts it a little but cannot replace worn fibre, and we tell you which it is.
We rent from a housing association. Can you give us a receipt for the move-out?
Yes. Close to one home in five here (18.2%) is rented from a council or housing association, and end-of-tenancy cleans are part of our week. We clean every carpeted room, the stairs too, and email a dated receipt you can hand to your housing officer. Book the day before you return the keys so the carpets are dry.
If any treated area in a Shenley home is not right afterwards, our re-clean guarantee means we return and sort it. We are fully insured and DBS-checked, and we have cleaned carpets, upholstery and rugs across Shenley and the surrounding villages since 2009.
