Shortlands station opened on an embankment in May 1858, and the Shortlands House estate was sold for building within ten years, so the tall houses on the valley sides are almost all railway-age. London Carpet Cleaning has worked Shortlands, BR2, since 2009, from Valley Road to the interwar semis towards Hayes Road, and nearly every job is up a hill from the parade. We charge from £36 a room, hills included, and carpets are dry within 6 to 7 hours.

A railway suburb in the Ravensbourne valley
Shortlands fills the Ravensbourne valley between Bromley and Beckenham, and the slope is the first thing you notice on a job here. The station and the village parade on Station Road sit at the bottom; the houses climb away on both sides. Before the railway the place was known as Clay Hill. The station opened on 3 May 1858, was rebuilt in its present form in 1892 to 1894, and still has its two island platforms up on the embankment, with Southeastern trains to Victoria and Thameslink to Blackfriars via Catford. The Catford Loop joins the main line at Shortlands Junction, just west of the platforms.
House building began in the 1860s, when the Shortlands House estate was sold. The house itself, now listed at Grade II, still stands on Bromley Road; it was home to Bishop Challoner School until the school closed in July 2025. Tall Victorian houses built for London commuters line Valley Road, Kingswood Road and Shortlands Road, plenty of them now converted into flats with high ceilings and shared staircases, while the 1880s rows along Westmoreland Road and wider interwar semis towards Hayes Road fill in the slopes. Down by the station, the council agreed in May 2021 to make the more modest village houses a conservation area, with the station as a key part of it.
Along the valley floor off Ravensbourne Avenue, Shortlands Golf Club has played since 1894. It was founded as Beckenham Ladies Golf Club and took its present name in 1919, with the Ravensbourne running past the course. Harold Bride, the wireless operator who survived the Titanic, lived at 58 Ravensbourne Avenue from 1903 to 1922, and a blue plaque marks the house.
Where does the van go on a hill street?
Down by the station the council runs two small zones. Beckenham Lane is zone BB, permit holders only from noon to 2pm, Monday to Saturday, and Westmoreland Road is zone WMR, 8.30am to 6.30pm, Monday to Saturday. Neither zone sells visitor vouchers, so on those roads we time the job around the restricted hours. The bays by the Station Road parade are short-stay and mornings are tight, so we plan those jobs around the restrictions.
Up the residential hills most houses have a drive or free kerbside space, and our hoses reach through a front garden easily, so we rarely need the spot directly outside your door. The steep part is inside. In the tall Victorian conversions the flat can be two floors up a shared stair, and we carry the hose up the stairwell; tell us the floor when you book. Clear the landing and the stair treads, and lift anything stored under the beds, and we can start the moment we arrive.
Shortlands homes, counted
| Homes that are | Share |

| Detached houses | 14.4% |
| Built before 1919 | 24.5% |

| Built 2000 or later | 23.2% |
The ONS does not use the name Shortlands for a census area. The neighbourhood that covers it, in Shortlands and Park Langley ward, is called Bromley South, and as the name suggests it reaches towards the town, so read the figures as a guide to the wider valley. Purpose-built flats are the single biggest home type at 36.4%, and almost a quarter of the stock (23.2%) is from 2000 or later. Nearly a third of homes (32.7%) are rented privately. That is end-of-tenancy country: for a rented two-bed in one of the newer blocks, both bedrooms and the living room, the bill is £115, with a dated receipt for the agent.
The older Shortlands sits alongside. Some 24.5% of homes were built before 1919, the railway-age houses on the hillsides, and 14.4% are detached. Those are the wool stairs and the hand-knotted rugs on boards. The years 1945 to 1972 added another 25.3%. Only 1.4% of homes lack central heating, so drying is rarely a problem in any of them.

Stairs, cats and the party season
The Shortlands diary has a rhythm to it. Late autumn is front rooms and stairs before hosting season, whole ground floors cleaned in a day and protected so pale wool survives a houseful of guests, and January brings the follow-up calls for whatever the party left behind. Stairs are the local constant. Houses stacked on a hillside use their staircases hard, and a flight gone grey against freshly cleaned bedroom carpet is the single most common booking we take in this part of BR2.
Cats and children supply much of the rest: clawed sofa arms that need the pile brushed back up after cleaning, and bedroom carpets in the flat conversions. Plenty of families have the mattresses done yearly as routine. Ground-in cosmetics on cream carpet, mascara especially, will fade a long way but do not always vanish. We say exactly that before we start and do not promise what an oil-bonded dye will not do.

One visit for the carpets, the sofa and the rug
Most visits here combine jobs. Fitted wool and stair flights go through our deep steam carpet cleaning; sofas, armchairs and dining chairs, in fabric or leather, come under upholstery cleaning; and delicate or antique rugs start with a photo sent through our rug cleaning service, so we can say whether they can be cleaned safely on site. The same vans cover the rest of Bromley, so a relative’s place in the town centre can be booked alongside your own clean.
Shortlands bookings: the usual questions
Which parts of Shortlands do you cover, from Station Road up the valley?
All of it: the village streets around Station Road, the valley roads either side of the railway such as Valley Road, Kingswood Road and Westmoreland Road, and the slopes up towards Martins Hill and the Bromley boundary. Neighbouring BR2 areas, including Hayes and Ravensbourne, have their own pages, and the same team serves them all.
Where does your van park in Shortlands?
Near the station the bays are short-stay, and Beckenham Lane (zone BB, noon to 2pm) and Westmoreland Road (zone WMR, 8.30am to 6.30pm) are permit zones with no visitor vouchers, so we plan those jobs around the hours. Up the residential hills most houses have a drive or free kerbside space, and our hoses reach through a front garden easily.
Can you clean an antique or Persian rug from a Shortlands house?
Yes, and older pieces get a dye test first. Where the colours are delicate we use a low-moisture method and skip full immersion, which protects the dyes in a hand-knotted runner. Send a photo first and we say whether the piece can be cleaned safely on site; the visit happens at your home across BR2, so the rug stays in the house.
How long will carpet take to dry in a Shortlands home?
Count on 6 to 7 hours: a synthetic in one of the flats dries at the quick end, and a dense wool twist on a Valley Road staircase at the slow end. Down by the river the air is damper, so crack a window or put the heating on low. A morning clean is dry by the evening, and an evening clean dries overnight.
I rent a flat in one of the newer blocks. Can you clean it for my check-out?
Yes. Book the clean for the day before the inventory check if you can, so the carpet is fully dry and the pile has settled when the clerk walks round. We clean every room evenly, treat marks by the door and under where the sofa stood, and give you a dated receipt to show the agent. Two bedrooms and the living room come to £115.
Do you carry the equipment up to a second-floor flat in a converted house?
Yes. The machine stays in the van and only the hose and the hand tools come up, so a second or third floor in one of the tall Valley Road or Kingswood Road conversions is no problem. If the shared stairwell is narrow, we route the hose up the side and protect the paintwork as we go.
Every Shortlands clean carries our re-clean guarantee: if a treated stain resurfaces once the carpet has dried, we come back and treat it again free of charge. The team is fully insured and DBS-checked, and we have been cleaning across BR2 and the rest of London since 2009.
