What Soho homes are like
Soho is a working square half a mile across with almost no purpose-built housing in it. The homes are flats, and most are conversions carved out of old commercial buildings, three or four to a stair, above a shopfront or a kitchen. The street pattern is Georgian and protected: the Soho Conservation Area was designated by Westminster City Council in 1969, which is why the terraces around Soho Square and Golden Square stay low, at roughly three to five storeys, instead of being rebuilt tall. You get the odd loft-style block too, like the apartments on Wardour Street, and a run of flats on Marshall Street, but the typical job is a one or two-bed conversion reached by a narrow shared staircase.
Nobody walks to a Soho tube, because Soho has none of its own. The flats sit inside a ring of stations: Tottenham Court Road on the north-east corner at St Giles Circus, on the Central, Northern and Elizabeth lines, plus Leicester Square, Piccadilly Circus and Oxford Circus a few minutes out. Berwick Street Market, one of the oldest in London and still lined with fabric houses and record shops, runs right through the middle, so a fair number of the homes we clean look straight down onto a market stall.
