Northolt Road is the high street here, and the flats over its butchers, grocers and chicken shops mean small rooms and stairs shared with neighbours. Behind it, the roads off Eastcote Lane and Alexandra Avenue are interwar semis and terraces with bay windows, and out towards Newton Farm come newer homes. London Carpet Cleaning covers South Harrow, HA2, from £36 a room, with carpets dry within 6 to 7 hours.

Electric trains first, then Metro-land
South Harrow has a small place in railway history. The station opened on 28 June 1903 as a terminus of the District Railway, on the first stretch of the Underground’s surface lines to run electric trains in place of steam. The Piccadilly line took over on 23 October 1933, and the present station on Northolt Road, by Charles Holden, opened on 5 July 1935. It is in zone 5.
Most of what a cleaner walks into dates from the same years: an interwar semi or terrace with bay windows, a hall and landing, and reception rooms carpeted decades ago. The area grew south and west from the old hamlet of Roxeth once the railway arrived. The flats above the Northolt Road shops are a different job, with smaller rooms, tighter access and a shared stair. Roxeth Recreation Ground, south of Northolt Road with entrances off Kingsley Road, is the nearest big green.
The newest homes are going up on the Grange Farm estate off Northolt Road. Built in the 1960s as 282 prefabricated homes, it is being rebuilt by the council in phases: 89 homes were finished in 2023, the next phase of 45 affordable homes was cleared for building in March 2026, and about 500 homes are planned in all.
Grey landings and family lounges
The staple job here is a hall, stairs and landing gone grey down the middle from years of feet, plus a lounge that takes the family and, often, the dog. We work the edges and the worn strip by the front door hard, because that is where a South Harrow carpet always shows it first, and the beige usually comes back. Spills near the dining table, turmeric and curry among them, lift far more often than people expect once the right treatment goes down.
Wear is the limit. On the older wool and mixed-fibre carpets in these interwar houses, a deep clean lifts dirt and revives colour, but where the pile has been walked flat and thin on a stair edge or a doorway over twenty or thirty years, that fibre is gone and cleaning cannot put it back. Before we start we show you which marks are dirt and which are wear.
Newton Farm and South Harrow in census figures
| Homes that are | Share |
|---|---|
| Terraced houses | 36.4% |
| Purpose-built flats | 33.2% |
| Rented from the council or a housing association | 27.3% |
| Owned outright | 17.8% |
| Three bedrooms | 39.0% |
| Built 1919 to 1944 | 42.6% |
| Built 2000 or later | 32.8% |
The census splits South Harrow three ways. The map point for this page falls in the area it calls Newton Farm, the western side towards Eastcote Lane and Rayners Lane; the station and the Northolt Road parade sit just inside the neighbouring areas. Newton Farm has the highest share of social renting of any census area in Harrow, 27.3% of homes rented from the council or a housing association, and only 17.8% are owned outright.
Two building eras dominate. 42.6% of homes are interwar, mostly the terraces (36.4% of all homes) and semis, while 32.8% have been built since 2000. Purpose-built flats make up 33.2% of homes. Three bedrooms is the commonest size at 39.0%. For a three-bed terrace with a through-lounge and its flight of stairs, the job comes to £210. Central heating is missing in only 1.9% of homes, so drying is rarely held up by a cold house.

Zone M, zone M3 and the Northolt Road bays
South Harrow’s permit zones are centred on the station. Zone M3, covering parts of Northolt Road and the streets beside the station, is controlled Monday to Saturday, 8am to 6.30pm. The wider zone M is controlled Monday to Friday from 10am to 11am and 2pm to 3pm, so outside those two hours its bays are open. In spring 2026 the council consulted on stretching M3 over Station Parade, Alexandra Parade and more of Northolt Road, so read the signs on the day.
Away from the high street, most residential roads are easier, and many houses have a drive or a hardstanding where the van can stand while the hose runs in. On the streets round Newton Farm school we arrive after the morning school run. For a flat above the shops, we unload in a side road and carry the hoses up; tell us which floor you are on and whether the stair is shared.

Carpets, suites and rugs across South Harrow
Most bookings here are hot-water extraction, our steam carpet cleaning, which is what gets a traffic-grey landing back to its proper colour. We also clean sofas and suites through our upholstery cleaning service, fabric and leather alike, and larger wool pieces get rug cleaning on the floor of the room they sit in, during the same visit. We cover the rest of Harrow too, along with neighbouring Roxeth and West Harrow, at the same fixed prices.
South Harrow customers’ questions
Do you cover all of South Harrow, from Northolt Road to Shaftesbury Avenue?
All of HA2 around the town: Northolt Road and the high street, Roxeth, the Shaftesbury Avenue and Alexandra Avenue streets, Newton Farm, and the roads off Eastcote Lane and Roxeth Green Avenue down to Roxeth Recreation Ground. Near the Rayners Lane or West Harrow edge, we still come at the same fixed rate.
Is parking a problem for your van on my street?
Most residential roads are fine, and many houses have a drive, so we park close and run the hose in. Streets nearer Northolt Road and the station fall in zones M and M3, with M3 controlled Monday to Saturday all day. If yours is one of them, say so when you book and we will sort out where to pull up.
Can you clean a sofa or leather suite as well as the carpets?
Yes. We clean fabric three-seaters, cream ones the dog has got to included, and we clean and feed leather suites so they look and feel better. On older leather, feeding softens and revives the hide, though a well-used arm may still show its wear, and we will tell you that up front.
How long do carpets take to dry in a South Harrow semi or flat?
Usually 6 to 7 hours for a stairs and landing or a single room, so a morning job here is dry by the evening. It depends on the pile and the airflow, so a thick lounge carpet in an interwar semi, or a first-floor flat above the shops with little through-draught, can take a little longer.
Is there anywhere to unload for a flat on Northolt Road?
Not on the main road itself, where the M3 controls run all day, six days a week. We use the nearest side street and walk the hoses round, which adds a few minutes and nothing to the price. If your flat has a rear entrance from a service road, tell us, as that is often the shortest run.
Can you do a mattress while you are here?
Yes, from £35. We vacuum it first to lift dust and skin flakes, then clean the top surface with a low-moisture method so the filling never gets soaked. Stains from children or pets are treated separately. Stand it on its side with a window open afterwards, and it is ready for bedding by night.
Every South Harrow job is covered by our re-clean guarantee: if a mark comes back, so do we, free. We are fully insured, our cleaners are DBS-checked, and we have cleaned carpets, upholstery and rugs across South Harrow and the rest of Harrow since 2009.
