The Lion cement works opened at South Stifford in 1874, cut into the chalk by the Thames, and the narrow-fronted terraces that followed still line the roads off London Road, each with a hall running straight back to the kitchen. London Carpet Cleaning covers South Stifford, RM20, from £36 a room, and carpets are dry within 6 to 7 hours.

Cement, chalk and narrow-fronted terraces

South Stifford is the strip of Thurrock between Grays town centre and West Thurrock, south of the A13, and it meets Chafford Hundred at Mill Lane. Chalk made the place. Several cement firms, the Lion Cement Company among them, were quarrying here by 1874, and a tramway cutting carried chalk from Lion Pit down to the works. Aerial photographs from 1927 show the Lion Portland Cement Works with its wharves and piers on the river. Most of the local firms later merged into Associated Portland Cement, the company that became Blue Circle, and the worked-out pits to the north were filled from 1988 by the new homes of Chafford Hundred.

The houses followed the works. Devonshire Road, Buckingham Road, Hertford Road and Cornwall Road set the pattern: narrow-fronted terraces with a hall running back to the kitchen, then a small garden, most of them from the early 20th century. Some of the oldest cottages near the old Grays to Purfleet road were built for workers at the Lion works. For town, the nearest stations are Grays and Chafford Hundred Lakeside, both on c2c into Fenchurch Street in about 35 minutes. The M25 and the Dartford Crossing are about two miles west, and Lakeside is a few minutes along the A126, so plenty of households here commute one way and shop the other.

Is there a permit zone in South Stifford?

No. Thurrock’s published list of permit zones covers Grays town centre, Badgers Dene, Purfleet, Tilbury and Stanford-le-Hope, with smaller schemes in South Ockendon and Chadwell St Mary, and none of its roads are in South Stifford. Parking is on-street, the terraces have no drives, and the kerbs fill up in the evening. We aim to arrive mid-morning, once the commuters have gone, and on the tighter roads near London Road we may park a few doors down and run the hose along the pavement. It makes no difference to the clean or the price.

Inside, the narrow plan sets the job. The front door opens onto the hall and the foot of the stairs, so that one strip of carpet takes every trip in and out and dulls long before the bedrooms do. Move bikes and shoes out of the hall before we come, because the hose comes in through the front door and up the stairs and needs a clear line. In the lounge, an armchair that has stood in one spot for years leaves a greyed, flattened patch. We get it clean and even, but worn fibre is wear, not soil, and the flattened spot will still read as a worn patch. We tell you on the doorstep which marks are wear and which are dirt.

The census has no South Stifford of its own. The RM20 streets fall in the area it calls West Thurrock, which also takes in the new estates towards Lakeside, so the table mixes our terraces with a good deal of newer housing. The old stock still shows through. 16.1% of homes predate 1919 and another 18.4% went up between the wars, and terraced houses are the biggest single type, at 37.4%. Three bedrooms (41.2%) is the commonest size. For a three-bed terrace on Hertford Road, with the bedrooms, the living room and the stairs, the total is £192.

Private renting stands at 28.4%, so end-of-tenancy cleans come up all year, often on a fixed check-out date with an agent’s inventory to match. Heating is rarely a worry: only 2.6% of homes have no central heating, and with the radiators on low a carpet in these terraces is dry on time, January included.

Carpets, sofas and rugs in RM20

Most South Stifford bookings are hot-water extraction carpet cleaning for halls, stairs and living rooms, the rooms that show wear first in a terrace. We also clean sofas and armchairs with our upholstery cleaning service, matched to the fabric so a tired three-seater comes back fresh, and we clean rugs in your home through rug cleaning, pre-treating a wine or juice stain that has set before the shampoo and rinse. For the London RM postcodes over the boundary, see how we work in Havering; next door, West Thurrock has its own page.

Before you book in South Stifford

Do you cover all of South Stifford and the RM20 postcode?

Yes, the whole of South Stifford and RM20, from London Road and Mill Lane across to the West Thurrock side. The area is just outside Greater London on the Essex bank of the Thames, and our London team treats it as part of the regular round, so there is no extra travel charge for crossing the boundary.

Is parking a problem for the van on these streets?

Rarely. South Stifford has no controlled parking zone, so we usually find a space on or near your road and run the hose straight in. On the tighter terraced streets near London Road we may park a few doors down, which changes nothing about the clean or the price.

Can you get a red wine or juice stain out of a rug?

Often, yes, and we do it in your home. We dry-vacuum the rug, test the dyes, pre-treat the stain, then shampoo and rinse it so the colour holds. Set red wine is not guaranteed, but treating it on the same visit gives it the best possible chance.

How long do carpets in South Stifford’s terraced houses take to dry?

Usually 6 to 7 hours. Hot-water extraction pulls most of the moisture back out, so after a morning clean the carpet is dry by the evening and the furniture can go back then. Until it is, keep to socks, not shoes. In a narrow terrace the hall and stairs dry quickest because they get the most air, while a thick lounge carpet in a colder room takes a little longer.

Can you do the hall, stairs and landing as one job?

Yes, and in these terraces it is the job we would suggest first, since the hall and stairs take the traffic of the whole house. The stairs are priced per flight, from £41. Tell us the length of the hall and the size of the landing when you book and they go into the same fixed quote, so you know the full figure before we arrive.

I live just over Mill Lane in Chafford Hundred. Is the price any different?

No. Chafford Hundred and South Stifford meet at Mill Lane, and the same crew covers both on the same round, at the same fixed prices and with no travel charge. The homes on the Chafford side are newer, built from 1988 onward, and we clean them the same way.

Our re-clean guarantee applies to every South Stifford job: if a treated area is not right, we come back and fix it. We are fully insured and DBS-checked, and we have cleaned carpets, upholstery and rugs around Thurrock and across London since 2009.

Hallway and stairs cleaned ready for Christmas visitors. Looks much better and the price was fair. He did arrive at the very end of the time slot so I'd nearly given up waiting, but he apologised and did a thorough job.

Kitchen tiles and grout cleaned, the grout had gone almost black over the years. Much better now and looks fresh. One small patch by the back door didn't lift fully, he said it might be staining rather than dirt, but the rest is great.
