What St Michael’s homes are like
St Michael’s takes its name from St Michael Cornhill, the Wren church whose Gothic tower top was finished by Nicholas Hawksmoor and whose foundations sit on the buried Roman basilica of Londinium. This is one of the higher points in the City, about 17 metres up. Homes are the exception here. Most of what surrounds the church is office floors, and residents are tucked into flats above the shopfronts on Cornhill and Leadenhall, or in a handful of upper-floor apartments reached off the alleys.
The alleys are the character of the place. St Michael’s Alley runs south off Cornhill past the Jamaica Wine House, known locally as the Jampot, which stands where London’s first coffee house opened in 1652. Round the corner in Castle Court is the George and Vulture, a chophouse Dickens gave to Mr Pickwick. These are narrow setted passages with no room for a van door to swing, and the flats above them are small, older and often carpeted in wool. Nearest stations are Bank, barely a minute up the hill, and Monument just below it, so most residents here have no car at all.

The pattern in a City flat is different from a family house. These are weekday homes for a lot of people, used four or five days and empty at the weekend, so the carpets do not wear in tracks the way a hall in a terrace does. How do you park and get kit into the alleys?
We do not rely on parking on Cornhill itself, which is tight and controlled. We drop the machine and hoses at the nearest kerb or loading point and run the hose in on foot, which suits the narrow setted courts around the church perfectly. Tell us the building and floor when you book so we bring the right length of hose for an upper flat.
Do you clean the wool carpet in the older upper-floor flats?
Yes, and it is most of what we clean here. Wool and wool-blend carpet needs less water and a gentle detergent so it will not shrink or brown at the edges. We test an out-of-the-way corner first, clean on a low-moisture setting, and groom the pile so it dries evenly. A period wool floor usually comes up soft and even rather than crushed.
How long before I can walk on it, and is it good for a concierge building?
A City flat is normally touch-dry in one to two hours because we leave very little moisture in the pile. That fits a porter or concierge building well, since we can be in and out inside a morning.
