Cromer Street shows St Pancras in a single road: railway tenements from before 1919 along the north side, and nine six-storey slabs of council flats from 1949 to 1951 along the south. London Carpet Cleaning has worked St Pancras, WC1, since 2009, from the mansion flats off Judd Street to Argyle Square. A room costs from £36, and carpets are dry within 6 to 7 hours.

Tenements, slabs and Argyle Square
St Pancras is the residential grid south of the two great stations, and its housing is older and denser than the glass around King’s Cross Square suggests. Cromer Street, called Lucas Street until 1818, once had 105 early-nineteenth-century houses; it has been largely rebuilt and now holds more than 1,000 council and housing-association homes. The tenements on the north side are admired for their architecture, and the slabs on the south, by Hening and Chitty, were picked out by Pevsner in 1952 as some of the first good post-war flats. In 1996 the area became the subject of a regeneration programme worth 46 million pounds.
Argyle Square was built through the 1830s and 1840s on the site of a failed music and arts centre, and almost all of it survives: Nos. 7 to 47, everything but the north side, are Grade II listed, and many are now bed and breakfasts. The streets between Judd Street, Argyle Street, Swinton Street and King’s Cross Road were added to the King’s Cross Conservation Area in 1991. Most people here are a short walk from St Pancras International, with its Eurostar, East Midlands Railway, Southeastern high-speed and Thameslink platforms, and from King’s Cross St Pancras Underground, where six lines meet. On Cromer Street itself stand the Church of the Holy Cross, by Joseph Peacock and dedicated in 1888, and The Boot, headquarters of the Gordon rioters and a setting in Dickens’s Barnaby Rudge.
St Pancras homes, counted
| Homes that are | Share |
|---|---|
| Flats in converted houses | 13.3% |
| Socially rented | 50.4% |
| Rented privately | 32.0% |
| One-bedroom homes | 43.9% |
| Built before 1919 | 54.9% |
| Built 1945 to 1972 | 20.7% |
The ONS calls this census area King’s Cross and Bloomsbury North, and it covers the WC1 side of St Pancras from Judd Street to Gray’s Inn Road. More than half its homes (54.9%) were built before 1919, which is the tenements, the Argyle Square terraces and the mansion flats; another 20.7% date from 1945 to 1972, the era of the Cromer Street slabs. Flats in converted houses make up 13.3%, mostly the terraces, where several households share one stair.
Half the households (50.4%) rent from the council or a housing association and almost a third (32.0%) rent privately, so check-outs and tenancy inspections fill a good part of our diary. Homes are small. More than four in ten (43.9%) have one bedroom, and a one-bed in the Cromer Street slabs, bedroom and living room, is £79. The work is rarely big; it is often careful, because the carpet in an old mansion flat may have been down for decades.
Figures: ONS Census 2021 (Camden 029) and VOA council tax stock, March 2024.
Why do the old carpets here look flat and grey?
Because in the older blocks the wool has often been down for decades, and what the eye reads as dirt is pile walked flat with grit in its base. The jobs split between the mansion flats and the estates. In the older blocks, a lounge or a hallway goes flat and grey long before it shows a stain, and a hot-water extraction clean lifts the pile and the colour back up. Communal stair carpet is a steady request in the blocks, since it takes every resident’s shoes and shows it fast, and it comes up much fresher once done.
Lower-ground and basement flats are common along here, and they dry more slowly than a bright upper floor, so a heavy carpet in a north-facing lower room can run to the long end of the 6 to 7 hours even with a window open. And if a wool carpet has been walked flat for twenty years in a hallway, cleaning restores the colour and lifts the pile, but it will not rebuild fibre that feet have worn away.
Getting to the door in CA-D
There are no drives. This side of St Pancras is Camden’s CA-D zone: meter and permit bays, controlled from 8:30am to 6:30pm on weekdays and from 8:30am to 1:30pm on Saturdays, with nothing on Sundays at present. Camden asked residents in late 2025 whether to stretch those hours and add Sunday controls, with any change to go through a formal consultation planned for mid-2026, so we read the plate on your street on the day.
Point us to the nearest bay or to a loading spot outside your block when you book. The van carries its own kit and power, so once we are in we are self-contained. In the mansion blocks and the slabs, tell us the floor and whether there is a lift. In the Argyle Square terraces the stairs are narrow, and where a lower-ground flat sits below the pavement the hose goes down the area steps, so clear them of bins and bikes if you can.

Carpet, sofa and rug cleaning on the WC1 side
The core of the work is hot-water steam carpet cleaning, which lifts flattened wool in a mansion flat and shifts a coffee mark by the sofa. We also handle upholstery cleaning for the corner sofas and armchairs that soak up a dog’s smell over a winter, and rug cleaning on your own floor for the hall runners that come in caked after a wet week. Elsewhere in the borough the same team covers the rest of Camden, along with neighbouring King’s Cross and Agar Town across the tracks.
St Pancras: what people ask before booking
Which St Pancras streets do you cover, from Judd Street to Cromer Street?
The whole WC1 side of St Pancras, from Judd Street, Bidborough Street and Argyle Square across to Gray’s Inn Road, taking in Cromer Street, Hastings Street and Mabledon Place. The WC1H and WC1X streets around the two big stations are on our regular round, and there is no extra charge for the central postcode.
Where does the cleaner park on these streets?
In the metered or permit bays of the CA-D zone, so point us to the nearest ones when you book, or to a loading spot outside your block. For a mansion-block flat, tell us the floor and whether there is a lift so we can plan the carry.
Can you clean the communal stairs carpet in a mansion block?
Yes, and it is one of our more common jobs around here. Shared stairs and landings take every resident’s feet, so they grey up quickly, and a full flight starts at £41. We can do the carpet for a single flat or, by arrangement with a managing agent or freeholder, the whole staircase in one visit.
How long will an old wool carpet take to dry?
Most carpets take up to 6 to 7 hours to dry, so a morning clean is ready that evening. A dense wool carpet in a lower-ground or basement flat is at the slower end, so we crack a window and leave the airflow going. Upper-floor flats with good light sit at the quicker end. Wear socks, not shoes, on it until it is dry.
I rent from a housing association. Can you clean before my tenancy inspection?
Yes. Half the homes in this part of St Pancras are socially rented, and we often clean ahead of a housing officer’s visit or a move-out. Tell us the inspection date and we will come a day or two before, so the carpet is dry and settled, and you get a dated receipt in case the landlord asks what was done.
Can you get a dog smell out of a sofa?
Usually, yes. The smell lives in the cushion fillings and the backing as much as the cover, so we pre-treat with an enzyme cleaner, then clean by extraction to rinse it out of the fabric. A sofa that has had a dog on it all winter comes up much fresher, though a deep accident in the foam may need a second treatment.
Every clean comes with our re-clean guarantee: if a spot dries back or a result falls short, we return and put it right at no cost. We are fully insured and DBS-checked, and we have cleaned carpets, sofas and rugs across St Pancras and the rest of Camden since 2009.
