Almost every house in the Northwold and Cazenove conservation area went up between 1865 and 1895 on land owned by the Tyssen-Amhurst family, and the streets running up to Stamford Hill still hold some of Hackney’s biggest family homes. London Carpet Cleaning covers Stamford Hill, N16, and the N15 side around Amhurst Park, from £36 a room. Expect the carpets to be dry within 6 to 7 hours.

Big Victorian houses on the old Roman road
Stamford Hill sits on Ermine Street, the Roman road that is now the A10, about five and a half miles north-east of Charing Cross, with Stoke Newington to the west and Clapton dropping away to the east. It stayed largely rural until the railway and the trams arrived in the 1870s, and then it filled quickly with tall terraces and semi-detached villas on roads like Cazenove Road, Bethune Road, Egerton Road and Lordship Road, many of them four and five bedrooms deep. Hackney made the Northwold and Cazenove conservation area on 15 September 2010, joining Cazenove Road to the older Northwold and Evering Road areas, so the buff stock-brick fronts and painted cornices are now protected.
These are family houses that hold a lot of people. Stamford Hill is home to the largest concentration of strictly Orthodox Ashkenazi Jews in Europe, and many homes fill up for Shabbat, Yom Tov and simchas, so the front room and dining room floors take real traffic. The nearest station is Stamford Hill on the London Overground’s Weaver line, its entrance on Amhurst Park at the N15 boundary, with trains to Liverpool Street; Clapton Common and Springfield Park supply the green.
Stamford Hill North in figures
| Homes that are | Share |
|---|---|
| Terraced houses | 25.5% |
| Flats in converted houses | 20.1% |
| Rented privately | 48.4% |
| One-bedroom homes | 27.3% |
| Four or more bedrooms | 28.3% |
| Built before 1919 | 53.2% |
The census area for this page is Stamford Hill North, and it has two kinds of home living side by side. More than a quarter of homes (28.3%) have four or more bedrooms, yet 27.3% have just one, because many of the big houses have been divided up: 20.1% of all homes are flats in converted houses. Over half the stock (53.2%) was built before 1919, and 37.6% before 1900, which matches the Victorian streets.
Private renting is the biggest tenure at 48.4%, with owners at 25.5%, so we clean as often for landlords between lets as for families before a festival. In the big houses the job is usually several rooms plus more than one flight of stairs. For a three-bed house with a through-lounge and one flight, the bill is £210, and each extra flight adds the stairs price again. Only 2.9% of homes have no central heating, though a tall house with the windows shut can still take until evening to dry fully.

What about Stamford Hill West?
Stamford Hill West is the quieter western side, the streets sloping down towards Stoke Newington and Clissold Park. The houses are much the same period stock, Victorian terraces and villas, with a little more of a mix between owner-occupiers and converted flats. We cover it on the same fixed prices as the rest of Stamford Hill, and being close to the Clissold Park side, it is where park mud and pushchair wheels show up most on hall runners and front-room carpets.
Two hours of parking control a day
Stamford Hill’s parking is lighter than most of Hackney. All of the council’s Stamford Hill zones operate only Monday to Friday from 10am to midday. Bethune Road and the streets around it west of the A10 are in Zone W (Stamford Hill West), and Cazenove Road and Egerton Road are in Zone T (Stamford Hill). Outside those two hours anyone can park, so we either start after midday or use one of your visitor vouchers for the morning.
Inside, the big houses mean long carries. We run the hose from the van through the hall and up, so keep the stairs clear of shoes and bags.

Reception rooms and three-piece suites
Most jobs here are a hot-water carpet clean through the reception rooms and up the stairs. A hosting house shows it in the carpets, from crumbs trodden into the front room to stair carpet worn down the middle by children going up and down all day. Hot-water extraction lifts dirt and most spills, but it cannot re-tuft a stair carpet walked threadbare down the centre, and where the pile has gone we tell you before we start. For three-piece suites that get daily use we bring the upholstery cleaning tools to match the fabric, and larger patterned rugs from the hall get specialist rug cleaning in the home during the visit. We cover the rest of Hackney on the same fixed prices, from Stoke Newington across to Clapton.
Stamford Hill: the questions we hear
Which Stamford Hill postcodes do you cover, N16 or N15?
Both. The core of Stamford Hill is N16, and we also cover the N15 streets around Amhurst Park and the station, plus Stamford Hill West towards Stoke Newington and Clissold Park. Book from Cazenove Road, Dunsmure Road, Bethune Road, Lordship Road or anywhere off the A10, all on the same fixed pricing.
Can you park on these terraced streets?
Yes. Stamford Hill’s zones only operate from 10am to midday on weekdays, so outside that window the van parks on the street. For a morning start we use a visitor voucher or pay at a bay, and we plan the load-in if your street is tight. There is no parking charge added to your quote.
Can you work around a large household and young children?
We do it constantly here. We book a slot that suits the house and move room by room so there is always somewhere clear, with hoses kept tidy and away from little ones. If you are cleaning ahead of a simcha or Yom Tov, tell us the date and we will make sure the carpets are dry and back in place in good time.
How long do carpets take to dry in a big Stamford Hill house?
Usually 6 to 7 hours to dry, longer for a thick wool pile or after a big soup or drink spill that needed a heavier rinse. A morning clean is dry by the evening. In a house of four or five bedrooms with the windows shut it can run on a little later, so open a window or two and keep the heating ticking over to help it along.
Can you clean three flights of stairs in one visit?
Yes, and in the taller houses here it is common. Each flight is priced separately from the list, so you know the total before we start. We clean from the top flight down so nobody has to walk on a damp tread to reach the bedrooms, and we can add the three-piece suite and the mattresses on the same visit.
Our flat is one floor of a converted house. Who pays for the shared stairs?
Whoever is responsible for the common parts, usually the freeholder or the managing agent. We can clean the shared hall and stairs on the same day as your flat and send that part of the bill to them separately, with a dated receipt. If the residents split it between them, tell us and we will word the receipt that way.
Every clean comes with our re-clean guarantee: if a treated area does not come up right, we come back and put it right at no charge. We are fully insured and DBS-checked, and we have cleaned across Stamford Hill and the rest of Hackney since 2009.
