Stoke Newington Church Street runs from the High Street to the gates of Clissold Park, past St Mary’s Old Church of 1563, and the Victorian terraces south of it keep many of their original floors and fireplaces. Upper conversions often have wool on the stairs. London Carpet Cleaning covers Stoke Newington, N16, from £36 a room, and carpets are dry within 6 to 7 hours.

Church Street and the terraces either side
Hackney designated the Stoke Newington Conservation Area in 1983, extended it in 1985 and revised it in 2004. It follows Church Street, takes in much of the High Street and all of Abney Park Cemetery, and holds a good number of listed buildings: the old church, partly rebuilt after bomb damage in the war, faces St Mary’s New Church, designed by Sir George Gilbert Scott and built from 1858, and the Town Hall stands at the Albion Road junction. A lot of the houses on the streets nearby keep their original floors and fireplaces.
Most of N16 is Victorian. South of Church Street the streets are two and three-storey brick terraces of three or four bedrooms, many with stucco ground floors and a tiled front path. Carysfort Road and Clissold Crescent hold the larger four and five-bed red-brick houses, while Albion Road, Nevill Road and Barbauld Road make up the classic terraced grid. Plenty of houses are split into flats, and the upper conversions tend to carry wool or wool-blend carpet on the stairs and landings. Clissold Park, open since 1887, closes the west end of Church Street, and Stoke Newington station on the Weaver line runs down to Liverpool Street.
Two in five homes here are houses
| Homes that are | Share |
|---|---|
| Houses of any kind | 41.6% |
| Flats in converted houses | 21.4% |
| Owned, outright or with a mortgage | 41.8% |
| Rented privately | 36.8% |
| Four or more bedrooms | 21.7% |
| Built before 1919 | 74.2% |
The census area that covers Church Street is Stoke Newington North, and it has a higher share of houses than the census areas around it. 41.6% of homes are houses, and 21.7% have four or more bedrooms, which means long flights of stairs and plenty of hallway. Three homes in four (74.2%) were built before 1919, so wool and wool-blend carpet over old boards is common, and we clean it low-moisture.
The flats are mainly conversions. 21.4% of homes are flats inside converted houses, and 36.8% of households rent privately, so the upper-floor flat with a shared stair and a move-out date is a regular booking; 41.8% own their home, outright or with a mortgage. For an upper conversion off Albion Road with two bedrooms and a living room, the bill is £115. Just 2.4% of homes lack central heating, which keeps winter drying times close to summer ones.

Which jobs come up again and again in N16?
Two of them. The first is wool stair and landing carpet in the conversions and family terraces, where a dark traffic line wears down the middle of the flight; a low-moisture wool clean lifts that line a long way. The second is muck walked in off Clissold Park and Abney Park and ground into hallway and living-room carpet over a wet winter. Red wine and candle wax turn up often too. Toddler accidents on mattresses are another regular, and we treat them as routine.
Old wear is the one thing cleaning cannot reverse. On a wool stair carpet walked for years, the line down the centre is often worn fibre with no dirt left in it, and nothing rebuilds pile that has gone. We will get it markedly fresher and tell you on the day if a mark is going to stay.
Getting the van to your door
Church Street has a bus gate outside the Red Lion, in force from 7am to 7pm and closed to cars and vans in those hours. It went in as a trial in September 2021 and is now permanent, so we plan our approach from whichever end your house is on. Clissold Crescent has a planter filter, permanent since its 2020 trial, so through traffic cannot use it; we reach those houses from one end or the other.
Parking zones change across short distances here. South of Church Street, round Albion Road and Clissold Crescent, is zone M (Clissold), and north of Church Street by Lordship Road is zone G; the east end towards the High Street is zone E. All three are controlled on weekdays from 8.30am to 6.30pm, zones M and E on Saturday mornings too, and the streets nearest Clissold Park carry extra controls on Emirates Stadium event days. A visitor permit lets us park at your door; otherwise we use a paid bay and run the hose.

How we clean carpets, sofas and rugs in N16
For carpets and stairs we use hot-water extraction, our steam carpet cleaning method, which rinses out the grime and then pulls most of the moisture back so the pile is dry within 6 to 7 hours. We also clean sofas and tub chairs through our upholstery cleaning service, matched to whatever fabric you have, from linen to velvet. Loose wool runners and the larger floor rugs get a proper wash in the home under rug cleaning across N16. If you need the same team for the rest of Hackney, that page covers our work right across the borough.
Asked by Stoke Newington customers
Which parts of N16 do you cover?
All of it. We work the conservation-area streets around Church Street and the High Street, the terraces off Albion Road and Nevill Road, the larger houses on Carysfort Road, and the flats up towards Clissold Park and Newington Green. If you are on the Stamford Hill or Clapton edge of N16, that is well within our patch.
How do you handle parking on the terraced streets?
Stoke Newington is almost all controlled parking, split between three zones, so we ask for the nearest spot to your door and either use your visitor permit or find a paid bay close by. The hose reaches a long way from the van on the longer terraces, so we rarely need to be right outside, and there is no extra charge for the walk-in.
Can you get red wine or candle wax out of a wool rug?
Usually, yes. Fresh wine lifts best when it has not been scrubbed, so blot it and leave it for us. Set candle wax is softened and drawn out of the wool fibres with heat in your home, never picked at. We quote once we have seen the size of the rug and the spill, and tell you what to expect before we start.
How long will carpet take to dry in a Stoke Newington terrace?
Around 6 to 7 hours for most carpets, longer for a dense wool pile on the stairs of an upper conversion or a chilly basement flat in winter. We finish by drawing out as much moisture as the machine will pull, so a morning clean is dry by the evening. Use the room carefully with socks on until then, and put the furniture back once the carpet has dried.
I live on Church Street. Can your van reach me when the bus gate is on?
Yes. The bus gate outside the Red Lion only stops vehicles passing through it between 7am and 7pm; every house on Church Street can still be reached from one side or the other. Tell us your house number when you book and we come in from the right end, park in the nearest bay and carry the kit to your door.
Is parking harder on Arsenal match days?
It can be near Clissold Park. Parts of zones M and G carry extra controls on Emirates Stadium event days, and the signs on the street say when they apply. If your clean falls on an event day, we check the signs on your road the day before and allow a little more time to park and walk the kit in.
Every clean comes with our re-clean guarantee: if a treated area does not come up as agreed, we come back and put it right. We are fully insured and DBS-checked, and we have cleaned carpets, upholstery and rugs across Stoke Newington and the rest of Hackney since 2009.
