Mount Pleasant Crescent is the picture-book street of Stroud Green, two-storey terraces with tri-partite Venetian windows, and up the hill on Upper Tollington Park and Florence Road stand Gothic three-storey houses, many with wool on the original stairs. London Carpet Cleaning covers Stroud Green, N4, from £36 a room, and the carpets are dry within 6 to 7 hours.

Moss-green wool carpet on a tall Victorian staircase under a pointed-arch window

Gothic villas, red-brick terraces and a great many split houses

Stroud Green was built in two goes. From 1868 Joseph Lucas and other builders laid out Perth Road and its neighbours, with Gothic pointed or round-arched windows and some Italianate trim. Through the 1870s and 1880s land from the Stapleton Hall estate and the old Manor of Brownswood came up for sale, Stapleton Hall Road was cut through, and plainer red-brick Queen Anne terraces with canopied porches climbed the slope towards Mount View Road. Haringey made the area a conservation area in 2003, and its western edge follows the borough line with Islington.

The houses are tall and narrow, so a carpet clean here is mostly a stairs job. A family house can have two or three flights, a half-landing and a top-floor room under the roof. Many of the bigger houses were split into flats decades ago, and a lot of them are rented, so one road holds a settled family home with a wool runner beside a one-bed conversion that changes tenants every year or two.

The green edges matter as much as the bricks. Finsbury Park lies to the east, little Stationers Park sits up the hill, and the Parkland Walk runs through on the bed of the old railway to Alexandra Palace, which lost its last passenger train in 1954 and became a Local Nature Reserve in 1990. Dog walkers and runners on that path bring its mud straight back to the hall carpet.

The census does not use the name Stroud Green for this patch; the area that holds the upper streets is labelled Crouch End East, though it sits inside Stroud Green ward. The figures still describe what we walk into. More than two thirds of the homes (68.4%) were built before 1900, and 44.1% are flats inside a converted house, so the typical door opens onto a shared hall and a Victorian staircase, with your own flat on the first or second floor. That shared stair carpet takes the shoes of every household in the building and greys fastest.

Renting is high here, at 41.0% of households privately, which means a steady run of check-out cleans, and one-bedroom homes make up 34.5% of the total. For one of those top-floor flats, one bedroom plus the living room comes to £79. The big houses that were never divided are still here too: 17.5% of homes have four or more bedrooms, and those carry the long stair runs and the wool. Only 2.4% of homes lack central heating, while 9.8% heat by electricity alone, and in a flat like that a window open on the latch does more for drying than the storage heater.

Parking, stairs and getting the kit up to a top flat

The Stroud Green controlled parking zone (SG) runs Monday to Friday from 12 noon to 2pm, and parking is free outside those hours and on bank holidays. For most of the working day, and all weekend, we can use any free bay near your door. If the job runs over lunchtime on a weekday, we pay for the bay for those two hours. Nearer Finsbury Park station the rules change: the Finsbury Park zone runs Monday to Saturday, 8.30am to 6.30pm, and later on Arsenal match days and on the days the park holds a big event, so a booking on the southern streets is best kept off those dates.

The streets are narrow and lined with cars on both sides, and Mount Pleasant Crescent is tighter still. When the van cannot sit outside, we park where it fits and run a long hose to the door. In the converted houses the hose goes up the common stair, and we lay a runner along the route to protect it. Tell us the floor when you book. Clear shoes, bikes and post off the shared hall before we arrive and the stairs can be done first, while nobody needs them.

Stains, runners and the usual Stroud Green call-outs

The jobs we are asked for most are everyday accidents in lived-in rooms, such as a coffee ring that has nagged someone for months or a glass of wine over a fabric sofa. We pre-treat the mark and lift it, and most come up far better than people expect, which often saves a carpet someone had half decided to replace. The original wool runner on a tall terrace stair is a regular too, and we clean it in place and low-moisture so the boards either side stay dry.

Some marks have limits. A wine or coffee stain that has sat in pale wool for years we can usually lighten a long way but not always remove, and we say so at the door.

Fitted carpet, sofas and rugs across N4

We clean fitted carpets and stairs by hot-water extraction, which pulls the grit out of the base of the pile. The water is matched to the fibre, so the wool in the period houses gets a low-moisture clean and a hard-wearing synthetic in a rented flat takes a deeper hot rinse. We also clean sofas and armchairs in the home, clean wool and other loose pieces where they lie, with proper rug cleaning. For the rest of the borough, see our Haringey carpet cleaning page, and we cover next-door Finsbury Park on the same terms.

What Stroud Green customers ask us

Do you cover all of Stroud Green, from Crouch Hill to Finsbury Park?

Yes, the whole of the N4 part of Stroud Green, from Stroud Green Road and Crouch Hill station across to the Finsbury Park and Stationers Park sides, including Mount Pleasant Crescent, Florence Road and Upper Tollington Park. We have cleaned this corner of Haringey since 2009, so the team knows the conservation streets and the period staircases. There is no call-out fee.

The parking here is restricted, so how do you manage the van?

The Stroud Green zone only runs Monday to Friday from noon to 2pm, so for most of the day, and at weekends, the bays are free and we can usually park close. During that short window, or on a tight street like Mount Pleasant Crescent, we plan a longer hose run from wherever the van fits. Tell us your road when you book and we sort it.

Can you get an old red wine stain out of a wool rug?

Often, yes, and we do it in your home. We vacuum the rug, treat the stain with a pre-treatment, then shampoo and rinse the whole rug by hot-water extraction. An old set stain may need patience, and we tell you at the door what to expect.

How long do wool carpets take to dry in Stroud Green’s period homes?

Most carpets are dry within 6 to 7 hours, because we extract the water back out of the pile as we go. Wool in the older Stroud Green homes is cleaned with less moisture, so it dries safely without shrinking or browning. The original staircases sometimes hold the damp a little longer, so keep off them overnight to be safe and open a window.

Can you clean the shared stair carpet in our converted house?

Yes, and in this part of N4 it is common, since 44.1% of homes in the census area are flats in a converted house. We clean the shared hall and stairs at the flight rate, from £41 a flight, and can do your own flat on the same visit. If the freeholder or the other flats are splitting the bill, tell us who should get the receipt.

I’m moving out of a rented flat. Can you clean before the check-out?

Yes. Book the clean for after your furniture has gone, ideally a day or two before the inventory check, so the carpet is dry and the clerk sees it at its best. We leave a dated receipt for your landlord or agent. A one-bed flat with a living room starts at £79, and stains we cannot fully lift are noted before we start.

Every clean in Stroud Green is backed by our re-clean guarantee: if a spot comes back, so do we, at no charge. We are fully insured, our cleaners are DBS-checked, and we have cleaned carpets across N4 and the rest of Haringey since 2009.

Lounge and stairs cleaned before we had friends round for a dinner. A coffee ring on the lounge carpet that had bugged me for ages finally went. He was tidy, polite and finished on time. Really pleased with the whole thing.

Moved into a flat on Mount Pleasant Crescent and the carpets were in a state from the last lot. They cleaned the whole place and it feels properly fresh now. Polite, quick and a fair price. Saved us replacing them. Recommend.

Heavy lined curtains in the lounge cleaned on the rail before a family gathering. They look refreshed and smell lovely. He was on time, careful and reasonably priced. Did exactly what he said he would. Very happy with them.

Fabric settee cleaned, had a wine spill and general grubbiness from the kids. Most of it came out and it looks far better. One faint mark on a cushion is just visible, but he was honest it might not fully shift. Good value and friendly.

Stairs carpet cleaned and it looks much fresher. Took a bit longer to dry than the few hours I was quoted so we kept off it overnight, but the chap was friendly and careful round the skirting. Fair price and I'd use them again.
