Two stations stand a short walk apart on Greenford Road here: Charles Holden’s flat-roofed Piccadilly line box, listed since 1994, and the Chiltern stop for Marylebone. Around them run 1930s pebble-dash and brick semis on roads like Whitton Avenue East. London Carpet Cleaning covers Sudbury Hill Harrow from £36 a room, with carpets dry within 6 to 7 hours.

Where three boroughs meet

Sudbury Hill is a corner where boroughs touch, which is why a few streets carry HA0, HA1, HA2 and UB6 between them. The Piccadilly line station sits on Greenford Road (the A4127), just north of the junction with Whitton Avenue, right on the line between Harrow and Ealing. Holden rebuilt it in brick and concrete for the Piccadilly line’s arrival in 1932, and two lifts added in December 2021 made it step-free. The Chiltern station next door opened in 1906 as South Harrow and took the name Sudbury Hill Harrow in 1926.

Brent starts a little to the east. Harrow Road runs out from Wembley through Sudbury and crosses into Harrow at the Sudbury Court Drive junction, where it becomes the road called Sudbury Hill. So a booking from this patch can fall under any of three councils, and the parking rules change with them, though our prices do not.

Pebble-dash semis and through-halls

The stock around both stations is mostly interwar: semis in pebble-dash or brick, with a bay front and a porch, and a strip of front garden turned into a drive. Inside, the pattern repeats from house to house. A through-hall runs from the front door to the kitchen, a straight flight climbs to a small landing, and many owners have knocked the front and back rooms into one long lounge.

Towards Brent lies Sudbury Court, a planned estate laid out either side of a straight spine road called The Fairway, with semis turned at 45 degrees on the corners to face each junction. Brent made it a conservation area in January 1990, and the estates around it went up between the late 1920s and the end of the 1930s. Near the station forecourts there is a band of newer flats and conversions, and Barham Park and Vale Farm are a short drive away, so there is proper green on the doorstep and the foot traffic that brings into a hallway.

Mud by the front door, tea on the pile

The job here is shaped by those 1930s houses and the parks beside them. Most of what we clean is family carpet that has taken years of use: a tea ring on the front-room pile after a knocked cup, the grey lane down a through-hall, a dining rug gone flat and dull that we shampoo in the room and leave soft. Mud is the other constant. A dark patch inside the front door from boots that crossed Barham Park or the recreation ground is the single most common call.

Heavy clay ground into the entrance carpet over a couple of wet winters is sometimes a shadow, not a stain. We lift the great majority of it, and if a faint mark in the wear path is permanent we tell you before we start, never after. On a through-hall the trick is to clean the whole run in one pass so the colour stays even from the door to the kitchen.

Our figures come from the census area the page’s map point falls in, and that is not Sudbury Hill itself. It is the Brent side of Sudbury, between Sudbury Town and Wembley Central, about a mile and a half east of the stations. Read it with that in mind. The house type matches: semis are the biggest single group of houses (31.4%), and 30.6% of homes were built between the wars. Half the homes have three bedrooms or more, so the usual booking is three bedrooms, a lounge and the stairs. A three-bed house with a living room and one flight of stairs comes to £192.

The tenure is where the Brent side differs. Purpose-built flats make up 38.1% of homes and 43.9% of households rent privately, figures pulled up by the flats near Wembley Central; the semi roads by the stations are mostly owner-occupied. For us that means two kinds of booking: settled family houses on one side, and end-of-tenancy cleans in the flats on Harrow Road and around Wembley Central on the other. Only 2.2% of homes have no central heating, so a carpet dries on time in winter with the radiators on low.

Figures: ONS Census 2021 (Brent 019) and VOA council tax stock, March 2024.

Getting the van to your door

Most of the semis here have a drive or hardstanding, so we usually pull straight onto your frontage and run the hose in through the porch. Streets by the stations are busier, with commuters for the Piccadilly line and the Chiltern trains. On the Ealing side, the zones nearest are AA, which Ealing calls Sudbury Hill, and BB at Sudbury Town. On the Brent side, the Sudbury zone SH runs 8am to 6.30pm, Monday to Saturday. Tell us the road when you book and we check which council’s signs apply.

Inside, the work is quick to set up. Clear the hall of shoes and coats so the hose can run to the stairs, and empty the floor of the cupboard under them if you want it done. In a through-lounge, move small tables and plants; we lift and replace sofas and chairs ourselves.

Steam cleaning, suites and dining rugs

Our hot-water extraction is the core service, and you can read how the steam carpet cleaning method works before you book. We also clean three-piece suites and tub chairs with upholstery cleaning matched to the fabric, and a wool dining rug is cleaned in place as a rug cleaning job, once the table and chairs are moved off it. We cover Greenford and Perivale to the south on the same trip, and Sudbury and Wembley through our Brent page.

Sudbury Hill bookings: the usual questions

Which postcodes and streets do you cover?

All of the Sudbury Hill and Sudbury Hill Harrow area, which spreads across HA0, HA1, HA2 and UB6 because three boroughs meet here. That takes in Greenford Road, Whitton Avenue East, Allendale Road and the streets around both stations, plus Sudbury Court and the Brent side towards Wembley.

Is parking easy for the van near the two Sudbury Hill stations?

Usually. Most of the 1930s semis have a front drive, so we pull up on your frontage. Roads by the stations fill with commuters, and some fall in Ealing’s zones AA (Sudbury Hill) and BB (Sudbury Town), or in Brent’s SH zone further east. Tell us the road when you book and we plan the stop.

Do you clean mattresses and hard floors as well?

Yes. We treat mattresses for spills and freshen them, which families with elderly relatives often ask for, and it is done with care and no fuss. We also clean kitchen and utility tiles and scrub blackened grout without flooding the floor, so a tiled hallway or kitchen comes up clean and dries quickly.

How long do carpets take to dry in a Sudbury Hill through-hall semi?

Most carpets are dry within 6 to 7 hours. Our machine extracts the bulk of the moisture, so a through-hall or a flight of stairs in these 1930s semis needs the same 6 to 7 hours, with clean socks only until then. Drawing back the curtains and opening a window speeds it along, and we leave the room tidy and ready to use.

Which council covers my street?

It depends which side of a few boundary lines you sit. The Piccadilly line station is on the Harrow and Ealing border, Sudbury Hill road is in Harrow from the Sudbury Court Drive junction, and Sudbury and Sudbury Court to the east are in Brent. For a clean it changes only the parking signs we read; the price list is identical.

My front and back rooms are knocked through. Is that one room or two?

One. A through-lounge is priced as a single room, from £61, which is less than cleaning a front room and a back room separately. We clean it in one pass from the bay to the garden doors, so the pile dries to an even colour along its whole length.

Every clean comes with our re-clean guarantee: if a spot we treated comes back, we return and put it right. We are fully insured and DBS-checked, and we have cleaned carpets, sofas and rugs on this corner of north-west London since 2009.

Had the front room and hallway cleaned ahead of a family gathering. There was a stubborn tea ring on the carpet from a knocked cup and it's completely gone. Booking was easy and he turned up exactly when he said.

Kitchen and utility tiles plus the grout which had gone almost black. He didn't flood the floor like I feared and it looks proper clean now. Tidy worker, left everything as he found it.

Three seater and an armchair done. They came up grand and the chap was friendly. He did arrive at the very end of the slot and I'd nearly given up waiting, but once he started he was thorough enough.

Good clean on the stairs and bedrooms overall. There was a dark patch by the front door from muddy boots and most of it shifted but you can still just about see a shadow of it. Reasonable price for the lot though, no complaints really.
