What Surrey Docks homes are like
Almost everything here went up in one push. After the Surrey Commercial Docks closed in 1969 the peninsula sat derelict, then the London Docklands Development Corporation rebuilt it through the 1980s and early 1990s, putting up around 5,500 homes. So the housing is consistent in a way most of Southwark is not: low-rise brick flats and townhouses wrapped around the old dock basins, much of it dating from one fifteen-year stretch. The street names still carry the timber trade that built the place, with Norway Gate, Finland Street, Oslo Square and Helsinki Square all named after the Baltic and Scandinavian ports the softwood came from.
Greenland Dock, dug in 1696, is the oldest riverside wet dock in London and now sits ringed by flats with a watersports centre at one end. Next to it, Baltic Quay on Sweden Gate is the landmark you cannot miss, a 1989 block with vaulted roofs and circular windows that locals nicknamed the Ikea building, looking out over South Dock, the largest marina in London. The station is Surrey Quays on the Windrush line of the Overground, with Canada Water and the Jubilee line a short walk north.

Is parking a problem with the controlled parking zone?
It is manageable. Almost all of the dockside sits inside Southwark’s Zone S, which runs Monday to Friday, 8:30am to 6:30pm, so most weekday bookings need a visitor permit or a bay sorted before we arrive. Tell us the building when you book and we will plan the kit around the nearest place to pull in.
Can you get pet smells out of a sofa?
Usually, yes. A lot of our upholstery work here follows a dog that has been on the settee, and the smell is the bit people most want gone.
