Tattenham Corner station opened on 4 June 1901 at the top of the Downs, a short walk from the left-hand bend of Epsom racecourse that gave it its name, and the monarch has traditionally stepped off the Royal Train here for the Derby. The roads off Great Tattenhams and Tattenham Way are mostly inter-war and post-war family houses. London Carpet Cleaning covers Tattenham Corner, KT18, from £36 a room, with carpets dry within 6 to 7 hours.

A racecourse bend, a station and a boundary
Tattenham Corner, or the Tattenhams as locals tend to call the houses, sits on the northern slope of the North Downs, about three miles south-east of Epsom town centre. The sweeping bend at the top of the course is the original Tattenham Corner, and the racecourse’s own address is Tattenham Corner Road. The station is the end of the line from London, run by Southern, with two trains an hour to London Bridge on a normal day. It once had seven platforms for the race crowds and now has three.
There is a boundary to know about. The houses are in Reigate and Banstead, in the Tattenham Corner and Preston ward created when the borough’s wards were redrawn in 2019, while the racecourse and the open Downs fall into Epsom and Ewell. The streets are built around Great Tattenhams, with Tattenham Way running off towards Burgh Heath and Tattenham Crescent by the station. Most of the housing went up between the wars and in the decades after, and the bigger detached houses take the wider plots nearest the open downland.
The Tattenhams in figures

|---|---|
| Detached houses | 54.8% |
| Semi-detached houses | 25.6% |
| Homes with four or more bedrooms | 43.8% |
| Built 1919 to 1944 | 36.8% |
| Built 1945 to 1972 | 42.4% |
| Owned outright | 46.8% |
| Rented privately | 7.8% |
The census area that takes in Great Tattenhams, Tattenham Way and the station end is the one the ONS calls Tattenham North; the roads south of the station towards Preston are counted in a separate area. The figures show a place of family houses built in two waves. The inter-war years account for 36.8% of homes and 1945 to 1972 for 42.4%, so nearly four homes in five come from those two periods. More than half are detached (54.8%), a quarter are semis (25.6%), and 43.8% have four bedrooms or more.
These are settled homes. Almost half (46.8%) are owned outright, and just 7.8% are rented privately, so most of our work here is for owners whose hall, stairs and landing run in one carpet that has taken years of traffic. A four-bedroom Tattenhams house with a through-lounge and its one flight of stairs comes to £246. Only 0.5% of homes lack central heating, so on a cold day a radiator on low brings a carpet dry well before the evening.

Family halls, party stains and pet marks
The typical job here is a family house where the hall, stairs and landing run in one carpet and take the brunt of the traffic. We lift a lot of trodden-in food and drink from lounges and dining rooms, the sticky aftermath of children’s parties, and grubby arms on suites that have done a decade of evenings in front of the television. Wool rugs from sitting rooms come up well, and we clean those in the room too. Pet marks are common too, with the Downs on the doorstep for dog walking.
An old pet accident that has soaked through to the underlay and dried in can leave a faint shadow you only catch in certain light. We get the bulk of it out and kill the smell, but a stain that has been down for months and reached the backing is not always a full recovery, and we tell you that before we start.
Will Derby week affect my booking?
Only on the race days themselves. The Derby Festival runs over two days each year, and on Derby Day the train service to Tattenham Corner goes up from two trains an hour to six, with road closures published shortly before. We keep clear of the station end and the roads by the course on those days, and book you either side.
The rest of the year, access is easy. Most homes have their own drive or space outside, so the van pulls up close and the hose runs straight in. Where a road is lined with parked cars, we find the nearest legal space and carry the kit a few doors. Clear the stairs and the hall before we arrive, and move a car off the drive if it would block the door.
Carpet, upholstery and rug cleaning across KT18
Our hot-water extraction carpet cleaning is the right method for the wool and wool-mix carpets in these inter-war and post-war houses, lifting the grit that a vacuum leaves behind. We clean sofas and armchairs in the home with our upholstery cleaning service, and larger wool and patterned pieces get rug cleaning in your home, with the water extracted as we go. Over the line in London we cover Kingston upon Thames as well, and the neighbouring Downs streets in Epsom Downs.
Tattenhams questions
Do you cover all the Tattenhams streets off Great Tattenhams, KT18?
All of KT18 around the Tattenhams, including Great Tattenhams, Tattenham Way, Tattenham Crescent, Bunbury Way, Ballards Green and the Downs Road end towards Epsom Downs. We also reach the Reigate and Banstead and Epsom and Ewell streets either side, since the boundary runs right by the racecourse, so if you are nearby and unsure, ask when you book.
Is parking a problem for the van near Great Tattenhams?
Rarely. Most homes here have their own driveway or off-street space, and where a road is tight we find the nearest legal spot and run a longer hose. The exception is the Derby, when racecourse traffic and restrictions make the streets by the Downs busy, so we plan those days round the crowds.
Can you get juice and party stains out of a family lounge carpet?
Usually, yes. Trodden-in juice, squash and food spills respond well to a pre-spray and hot-water extraction, which flushes the sugars out of the pile so nothing is left to attract dirt. Fresh spills clear most reliably, but even older marks that have been walked in for a while normally come a long way back towards the original colour.
How long do carpets take to dry in a Tattenhams inter-war house?
Most carpets are dry within 6 to 7 hours of us finishing. Our machine draws the bulk of the moisture back out, so you are not left with a soaked floor. Thicker wool or a through-lounge can sit at the longer end, and a window open or the heating on speeds things along.
Should we move the car off the drive before you come?
If you can, yes. With the van on the drive the hose has the shortest run to the door, and nothing gets trailed across the lawn. If the car has to stay, leave room for the van behind it or tell us, and we will park on the road outside.
Do you also cover Preston and the streets south of the station?
Yes. The roads south of the station towards Preston and Tadworth are part of the same Reigate and Banstead ward, and we clean there on the same rounds, at the same fixed prices. There are more flats and terraced houses on that side, so a typical job is a smaller home with one flight of stairs.
Every clean is backed by our re-clean guarantee, so if a treated spot comes back within a week we return and put it right at no charge. We are fully insured and DBS-checked, and we have worked these streets and the wider Surrey edge since 2009.
