Wrythe Green sits about 400 metres north of Carshalton station, an old village green with a conservation area round it and older bay-fronted houses that keep wool on their original stairs and landings. London Carpet Cleaning cleans across The Wrythe, SM5, from £36 a room, from those houses out to the St Helier cottages off Green Wrythe Lane. Most rooms are dry 6 to 7 hours after we leave.

An old green and a 1930s estate

The Wrythe is a district of Carshalton about a mile north of the village centre, and the name is older than anything standing. It is thought to come from an Old English word for a small stream or spring; a spring once rose where the petrol station now stands opposite the green, and the place appears in records as Rithe in 1229. The modern spelling first shows up on the Ordnance Survey map of 1867. Most of the building came in the 1930s.

Two kinds of home dominate. Round the green, on Wrythe Green Road, Nightingale Road, North Street and West Street, you find the older terraces and bay-fronted houses. Sutton has made the green a conservation area of 5.1 hectares, and five buildings in it are listed Grade II, among them 1 and 2 Wrythe Green Road and 1 and 3 Nightingale Road. Along Green Wrythe Lane, which was once called Cannon Sheephouse Lane, you cross into the St Helier estate, the London County Council’s garden-city scheme of 1928 to 1936: cottage terraces and semis with front gardens, grass verges and their own paths, many of them bought by their tenants and now privately owned.

St Helier Hospital, opened in 1938, stands on Wrythe Lane, and Carshalton College is in the district too, with four primary schools nearby, Muschamp and Rushy Meadow among them. The 127, 151 and 157 buses thread the area, and Hackbridge station and the trams at Mitcham Junction are within walking distance. It makes for a real spread of households on one round, from a settled family on Nightingale Road to a let near the station that turns over every year or two.

The Wrythe by the numbers

Terraced houses47.1%
Flats of any kind24.1%
Three-bedroom homes46.6%
Rented from the council12.1%
Rented privately12.8%
Built 1919 to 194467.0%
Built before 19195.2%

The terrace is the typical Wrythe home: 47.1% of all homes, far ahead of semis, and two-thirds of the housing (67.0%) dates from 1919 to 1944, the estate years. Those houses are why most of our jobs here involve a flight of stairs, and why the stair carpet is usually the most worn piece in the house. The pre-1919 stock is small, 5.2%, and much of it is in the old streets round the green, where the wool carpets and original staircases are.

The council still owns a good share of homes, 12.1%, with private lets at 12.8%, so we clean for tenants, for landlords between lets and for families who bought their cottage years ago. Flats make up 24.1% of homes, most of them in purpose-built blocks. Three-bedroom homes lead at 46.6%; for one of those cottages, three bedrooms, the through-lounge and one flight of stairs, the bill is £210. Electric-only heating is uncommon at 6.9%, and with gas radiators on low a carpet dries on time.

Permits by the green and the hospital

Parking here depends on which end you live. The roads round the green and towards Carshalton station are in Sutton’s CS1 permit area, which takes in Station Road, Mill Lane, Denmark Road and parts of North Street, West Street and Nightingale Road; it only runs from 11am to 1pm, Monday to Friday. An early start often finishes before the zone begins, and for a longer job we ask for a visitor permit. Round the hospital, Wrythe Lane and the estate roads beside it fall in the St Helier areas, Monday to Friday, 8am to 6pm.

On the rest of the estate the van gets close: the St Helier roads were laid out with front gardens, verges and paths, so a short hose reaches the door. On the tighter terraces near the green we plan a longer reach. With four primary schools in the district, we aim to arrive after the morning drop-off on the roads beside them.

Family carpets, wool stairs and decorators’ dust

The jobs follow the homes. On the estate the recurring work is a family carpet that has taken years of children and pets, the lounge and the stairs most of all, plus the odd let handed back between tenants. In the older houses near the green it is wool stair carpets and a landing worn in the same line. Post-decorating calls are common too, the whole upstairs done once the bedrooms are painted, lifting plaster dust and paint specks out of the pile, and cat-kneaded settees and dog moult keep us busy before and after winter.

Some of the older terraces near the green have a solid floor under the carpet. Where a stain has soaked through into the concrete, a clean lifts the carpet well, but the mark can wick back faintly as it dries, and we tell you that at the door.

What we clean in Wrythe homes

We clean fitted carpets and stairs by hot-water extraction, matching the water to the fibre, so wool in the older homes is cleaned low-moisture while a tougher estate carpet takes a deeper hot rinse. We also refresh sofas and armchairs, treat shaggy and wool pieces with proper rug cleaning in your own front room, and freshen mattresses, bunk beds included. For the streets next door, see our Carshalton and Rose Hill pages, and for the rest of the borough our Sutton carpet cleaning hub.

Wrythe questions

Which Wrythe streets do you cover, from Wrythe Green to the St Helier roads?

All of The Wrythe in SM5: Wrythe Green, Wrythe Green Road, Wrythe Lane and Green Wrythe Lane, West Street, North Street, Nightingale Road and the St Helier roads running off Green Wrythe Lane. We have cleaned this corner of Carshalton since 2009, the estate and the older streets by the green alike, lets near the station included.

Is parking easy for the van on the estate?

Mostly, yes. The St Helier roads have front gardens, verges and their own paths, so we usually get close and run a short hose. Near the green the CS1 permit area runs from 11am to 1pm on weekdays, and the hospital roads are controlled from 8am to 6pm, so tell us your road and we plan the timing or ask for a visitor permit.

Can you get pet hair and odour out of a family carpet?

Yes. Dog moult worked deep into a stair carpet, or a settee a cat has kneaded for years, is some of our most common work here. We groom and pre-treat to lift the bulk of the hair, then hot-rinse with a deodoriser, so the pile feels thick again and the room smells fresh, with nothing masked.

How long will the carpet take to dry in a Wrythe family home?

Most carpets are dry within 6 to 7 hours, because we pull the water back out and leave none in the pile. A lounge and stairs done in the morning are usually fine by the evening, which suits a family on Nightingale Road that needs the room back the same day. A window open or the heating on low speeds it along.

My house is in the Wrythe Green conservation area. Does that change anything?

Not for an ordinary carpet clean. The designation protects the look of the green and the outside of the houses. If your home is one of the listed houses by the green, we treat old boards and joinery with care, keep the water low on the stairs and never lift anything fixed. Older floors near the green get the same low-moisture method as wool.

Do you clean for council tenants and housing association homes?

Yes. About one Wrythe home in eight is rented from the council, and we clean for tenants moving in or out at the same fixed prices as anyone else. If a housing officer needs proof, we give you a dated receipt listing the rooms. Book a weekday morning and we can usually fit round the key handover.

Every clean in The Wrythe is backed by our re-clean guarantee: if a spot comes back, so do we, at no charge. We are fully insured, our cleaners are DBS-checked, and we have cleaned carpets across SM5 and the rest of Sutton since 2009.

What our customers say in The Wrythe.

★★★★★
Lounge and stairs cleaned before my daughter's christening lunch at ours. A blackcurrant juice stain the kids had left on the landing came out completely. Polite, hard working and the price was exactly as quoted. Carpets dry by the evening.

Our settee and armchair were looking shabby after the cat had been kneading them for years. Came up beautifully and the fabric feels fresh again. Lovely chap, covered his shoes and left everything tidy.

Stairs and landing cleaned after the dog had moulted everywhere over winter. Every bit of hair gone and the carpet feels thick again. He did the awkward edges by hand and was bang on time. Faultless.

Whole upstairs done after we'd had the bedrooms decorated. They got the paint specks and dust out of the pile nicely. The booking got moved once which was a slight inconvenience, but they gave me good notice and the work was solid.

Got our mattress and the kids' bunk mattresses cleaned. They came up fresh and the marks gone. The chap seemed a little rushed towards the end as he had another job to get to, but he still did a decent job and was friendly enough.
