Theobalds Grove station opened in 1891, shut twice before 1920, and has run without a break since 21 November 1960; it takes its name from the grounds of Theobalds Palace, now Cedars Park. London Carpet Cleaning reaches Theobalds Grove, EN8, on the same run as Enfield, charging from £36 a room, and carpets are dry within 6 to 7 hours.

A station named after a palace

Theobalds Grove is the area round its own station, where Cheshunt meets Waltham Cross, on the Southbury Loop between Turkey Street and Cheshunt, in the borough of Broxbourne. The Great Eastern Railway opened it on 1 October 1891. Trains stopped in 1909, came back in 1915, stopped again in 1919, and returned for good in 1960. Today it is a Weaver line station in London fare zone 7, and a little over 750,000 journeys started or ended there in 2023 to 2024.

The palace that gave the area its name was Theobalds, the house built for William Cecil, visited many times by Elizabeth I and a favourite home of James I. Its site was given to the borough in 1919 and became Cedars Park, now over 19 acres of woodland walks and ponds, with a stretch of the old palace wall still standing on Theobalds Lane. Most of the housing round the station is younger than the park. Commuter streets spread through Cheshunt from the 1930s, and after the Second World War the council estates followed, some of them built on land bought by London boroughs for families moving out of the capital. Bury Green Road and Albury Ride are two of the roads we visit most, and the New River winds through the town on its way south.

Where does the van go in Theobalds Grove?

For the semis and terraces on the estates, usually on the drive or at the kerb outside, and the hose runs straight in. Round the station and the main roads it is tighter, so when you book, tell us your road and whether there are yellow lines or permit bays outside, and we plan where to stop. In a block of flats we ask which floor you are on and whether trades may use the lift, so the right length of hose comes up with us.

Cedars Park is the local walk, with paths through the woodland and round the ponds, and after a wet weekend its mud ends up on hall carpets and the bottom few stairs. We pre-treat the traffic lanes and lift the grit by hot-water extraction, then rinse the pile. On a stair carpet worn grey down the middle, the clean brings the colour back close to the edges, though where the pile has been walked thin, the backing will still show. Clear the stairs of shoes and the floor under the beds before we come; the furniture we move ourselves.

Post-war homes round the station, in figures

Semi-detached houses34.0%
Three bedrooms47.5%
Owned outright, no mortgage34.1%
Social rented11.5%
Built 2000 or later13.7%

The census area that takes in the streets north of the station is called Cheshunt Central, and it is more post-war than its neighbours: the VOA dates 55.6% of homes to 1945 to 1972. Semis lead at 34.0%, terraces and purpose-built flats each make up 26.6%, and nearly half of homes (47.5%) have three bedrooms. So a standard job is a three-bedroom house with a hall, a landing and one straight flight of stairs, often with the original 1950s or 1960s layout.

A three-bedroom terrace with a separate living room and one flight of stairs comes to £192. A third of homes (34.1%) are owned outright, and 11.5% are social rented, which means a share of our work here is for tenants and for housing associations, and 21.6% are rented privately, so check-out cleans are regular. The newer homes (13.7% built since 2000) usually have short-pile synthetic carpet that dries quickly.

Figures: ONS Census 2021 (Broxbourne 010) and VOA council tax stock, March 2024.

Carpets, sofas and rugs in EN8

For bedrooms, stairs and through-lounges we use hot-water extraction, the steam carpet cleaning method that rinses the detergent back out so the pile dries soft and fast. Fabric and corner sofas, dining chairs and headboards are handled by our upholstery cleaning service, matched to the fabric. Loose rugs, including large patterned ones from a Theobalds Lane lounge, get proper rug cleaning in your home, done on the same visit as the carpets. We cover the rest of Enfield and north London on the same days, along with Cheshunt and Waltham Cross next door.

Theobalds Grove: what people ask

Which EN8 streets do you cover?

All of the Theobalds Grove area and the wider EN8 round it: Bury Green Road, Albury Ride, Theobalds Lane, Brookfield Lane, Longfield Lane, Churchgate, College Road and the estate roads in between. We also reach the rest of Cheshunt and across to Waltham Cross. If you are near the station or the A10, you are well inside our patch.

Will you have somewhere to park on the day?

Almost always. Most homes on the estates have a drive or kerb space and we work straight off the van. Near the station and the main roads it is tighter, so tell us about any yellow lines or bays when you book; we may pull up a short way along and run the hose in, which makes no difference to the clean.

Can you do an end-of-tenancy carpet clean for my deposit?

Yes, it is one of our regular jobs in EN8, with so many rented flats and terraces near the line. We clean the carpets to the standard agents and landlords look for at check-out. The price depends on the rooms, so confirm them when you book and the quote holds on the day.

When will my stair carpet be dry in Theobalds Grove?

Usually 6 to 7 hours, and until then the stairs should be used carefully, with clean socks and no shoes. Because hot-water extraction rinses and then draws most of the moisture back out, a stair carpet in a Bury Green Road semi cleaned in the morning is normally dry by the evening. Good airflow speeds it up, so we open a window where it helps.

I rent from a housing association. Can I book you myself?

Yes. Many tenants book us directly, for a move-out or simply because the carpet needs it, and you pay the same fixed room prices. If your landlord is paying, tell us when you book and we address the invoice and the receipt to them.

Do you also work in Waltham Cross, just south of the station?

Yes. The station itself is in Waltham Cross, and we clean the streets on both sides of it on the same rounds, along with the rest of Cheshunt to the north. A booking in Waltham Cross is priced exactly as one in Theobalds Grove, with no call-out fee.

Under our re-clean guarantee, any treated patch that does not come up properly gets a free return visit. We are fully insured and DBS-checked, and we have cleaned carpets, sofas and rugs across this corner of Hertfordshire and north London since 2009.

Front room and hallway carpets cleaned, there was a nail varnish spill on the lounge carpet that I'd hidden under a rug for ages. It actually came out, I couldn't believe it. The chap was on time, polite and made no mess. Brilliant.

Had the carpets cleaned for the end of our tenancy to keep the deposit. They did a good job and the landlord had no complaints. Price did go up a little once they saw the size of the rooms, more than the phone estimate, but we got the full deposit back so I can't really moan.
