David Bowie first played Ziggy Stardust at the Toby Jug pub in Tolworth in February 1972; the pub came down in 2000, and the roundabout that carries the A240 over the bypass keeps its name. Around it, London Carpet Cleaning cleans the 1930s semis of Tolworth, KT5 and KT6, on roads like Warren Drive South. Prices are fixed from £36 a room, and carpets are dry within 6 to 7 hours.

Two thousand houses after the bypass
Tolworth was still mostly brickfields and farmland when the Kingston Bypass opened in 1927. The new road brought the builders: about 6.5 miles of residential streets and some 2,000 houses followed, and Tolworth Broadway was laid out on the old Tolworth Lodge Farm. That is why streets like Warren Drive South run in long lines of bay-fronted semis with their own drives and back gardens. The A3 still splits the place in two, with KT5 on the Surbiton side and KT6 round the Broadway, and until 1965 all of it was in Surrey.
The railway came late. Tolworth station opened on 29 May 1938 as the original terminus of the Chessington branch, in the concrete art deco style of the whole line, and it still runs two trains an hour to Waterloo and Chessington South. In January 1940 plans for a Station Estate of 459 houses and 10 shops were approved round it, and the flats at Dean Court and Drayton Court went up on part of that land in 1959. The clay that fed the brickworks left its mark too: the pit off Red Lion Road, known locally as the Bluey, was filled with Blitz rubble and is now a recreation ground. Tolworth Tower, the brutalist slab over the Broadway, is the landmark from almost every street.
The jobs follow the housing. Three-bed semis mean a lot of stair and landing carpet that wears in a strip down the middle, plus bedrooms and a lounge done in one visit. Pets are common with gardens this size, and muddy paw marks off the Hogsmill and the Tolworth Court Farm fields come up all winter. Toddler accidents on fabric sofas are another regular, biscuit and juice ground into the cushions. Deep-set old urine that has soaked through to the underlay can leave a faint trace once everything dries; a clean lifts the surface but may not pull it all from below, and we will tell you on the day if that is likely.
What do the census figures say about Tolworth?
| Homes that are | Share |
|---|---|
| Houses of any kind | 74.1% |
| Three bedrooms | 52.6% |
| Four or more bedrooms | 17.0% |
| Owned outright | 25.6% |
| Rented from a council or housing association | 8.7% |
| Built 1973 to 1999 | 11.2% |
| Heated by electricity only | 8.5% |
They say Tolworth is a three-bedroom place. More than half of homes (52.6%) have three bedrooms, against 17.0% with four or more, and 74.1% are houses, so the standard booking is the three bedrooms, the landing and one flight of stairs. In one of the Station Estate semis, three bedrooms, the through-lounge and the stairs add up to £210. Almost two in three homes date from between the wars, but there is later building as well: 11.2% of homes date from 1973 to 1999.
Fewer owners here are mortgage-free than in the Berrylands avenues to the north (25.6% own outright), and the jobs lean towards children and pets more than a long-kept wool carpet. Heating is worth a look. 8.5% of homes run on electricity alone, and in those we leave a window on the latch and expect the longer end of the drying time.

Bays, the Broadway and the station roads
Tolworth is outside Kingston’s controlled parking zones, so there are no permits to sort on these streets, and most of the 1930s semis have their own drive. The nearest zone is T, Oakhill, on the Surbiton side of Ewell Road: its main area is controlled Monday to Saturday from 8am to 6.30pm, and Kingsdowne Road Monday to Friday from 10am to 3pm. If you are on one of those roads, tell us and we will use a visitor permit or a paid bay.
On Tolworth Broadway the kerb bays are council loading bays, open to goods vehicles from 9.30am to 4.30pm on weekdays and 8am to 6.30pm at weekends, which suits a delivery but not a two-hour clean, so for the flats over the shops we park on a side road behind. The roads right beside the station fill early on weekdays; book a morning slot there and we arrive before the commuter cars. Clear the hall and the bottom of the stairs before we come, and shut pets in the kitchen or garden until the carpets are dry.

Carpets, upholstery and rugs from one booking
For carpets we use hot-water extraction, the steam carpet cleaning method that rinses detergent and soil out of the pile, which keeps it from going crispy or soiling again fast. Sofas, armchairs and mattresses are handled as upholstery cleaning, fibre-tested first so a delicate cover is not over-wet. Loose rugs, including wool, sheepskin and the matted heirloom kind, are cleaned in the room through our rug cleaning service, and for an heirloom piece we ask for a photo first. We cover the rest of Kingston upon Thames too, and neighbouring Surbiton and Long Ditton on the same fixed rates.
Tolworth customers’ questions
Which Tolworth postcodes do you cover, on both sides of the A3?
All of KT5 and KT6, both sides of the A3. That takes in the streets around Tolworth Broadway and Red Lion Road, the roads off Hook Rise and Warren Drive South, the Station Estate and the houses backing onto the Hogsmill and Tolworth Court Farm fields. If you are near the Toby Jug roundabout or out towards Hook, you are still inside our area.
Is parking a problem for the van at a Tolworth semi?
Mostly not. The 1930s semis off Warren Drive South and round the Broadway nearly all have a driveway or a free residential street, so the van parks close to your door. The exceptions are the roads right by the station, where spaces fill early on weekdays, and the Oakhill streets towards Surbiton, such as Kingsdowne Road, which are in Kingston’s Zone T.
Can you get carpets through an end-of-tenancy check here?
Yes, and it is one of our most-booked jobs around the station flats and shared houses. We clean to inventory standard, treat the traffic lanes and any visible marks, and can time it for your check-out day so the carpets are presentable when the clerk walks through. It is one of the more reliable ways to protect a deposit.
How long will carpets in a Tolworth 1930s semi take to dry?
Usually 6 to 7 hours to dry, longer for a dense wool pile or a ground-floor room with little airflow. We extract as much moisture as we can on the day. Open a window or leave the heating ticking over and a morning clean is dry by the evening, so keep heavy traffic off until then.
Our 1930s stairs turn at the top. Can you clean the winders properly?
Yes. The tapered treads where a staircase turns are cleaned by hand with a stair tool, one tread at a time, so the wide outer edge gets as much attention as the narrow inner corner. A turning flight is still priced as one flight, from £41, landing strip included. Clear any stair gate or runner clips you can, and we will work round the rest.
Do you clean the flats over the Broadway shops?
Yes. About 4.1% of homes in this census area are flats over shops or in other converted buildings, including the flats above the Broadway parades. Access is usually up a rear stair from the service road, so tell us which door and whether there is a gate code. A one-bed flat with its living room comes to £79, and a two-bed to £115.
Every clean comes with our re-clean guarantee: if a treated area is not right, we come back and put it right at no charge. We are fully insured and DBS-checked, and we have cleaned for Tolworth households since 2009.
