Ten Trinity Square, built between 1912 and 1922 as the Port of London Authority’s headquarters, now holds 41 private residences beside a Four Seasons hotel. In the streets behind it, London Carpet Cleaning cleans flats made from old port offices and warehouses across Tower Hill, EC3, from £36 a room. The carpet is dry within 6 to 7 hours.

The port’s old headquarters and the streets behind it

Tower Hill is the high ground north-west of the Tower of London, where Trinity Square Gardens hold the Merchant Navy memorial. The gardens themselves lie just outside the City boundary; the streets behind them are inside it. For a carpet cleaner, the story here is one of offices and warehouses turned into homes. Apart from St Olave’s church and Trinity House, every building in the Trinity Square Conservation Area went up between 1900 and 1930, in Portland stone with a lot of classical detail, and the City’s own appraisal says the old port buildings now hold more and more apartments, hotels, restaurants and bars.

Ten Trinity Square sets the tone. Sir Edwin Cooper designed it, Lloyd George opened it in 1922, and since 2017 it has been a 100-room hotel with 41 private residences and a members’ club. Building it created two new streets, Pepys Street and Muscovy Street. Pepys Street is named after the diarist, who worked at the Navy Office close by. Savage Gardens runs north across Pepys Street to Crutched Friars, and the upper floors along these streets have been turned into flats. Tower Hill station sits on the Circle and District lines, with Tower Gateway DLR and Fenchurch Street station both a short walk away.

Spills, dull leather and musty curtains

The work here is more domestic than the office floors a few streets north. A typical booking is a lounge carpet in a converted flat after a party spill, or a black leather three-seater gone dull and tacky that wants cleaning and conditioning before guests arrive. A wool rug from an open-plan living area, with a coffee mark at the kitchen end, comes up often too. Floor-length curtains are a regular request. Left drawn while the owner is away for work, they pick up a shut-in, musty smell, and we clean them on site without shrinking them.

There is a limit with old stains. Red wine or coffee that has dried into a pale wool or nylon pile can leave a faint shadow even after a full clean. We lift the great majority completely, and on an old, deep stain we tell you before we start whether it may only fade.

Who lives near the Tower, by the numbers

Homes in the City of London census area (City of London 001), the one area covering Tower Hill and every other part of the Square Mile
Homes that areShare
Purpose-built flats87.0%
Built before 190020.7%
Built 2000 or later25.5%
Owned by the household36.5%
Rented privately48.3%
With four or more bedrooms3.8%

The census groups the whole City into one area, so the shares above describe all of it, Tower Hill included. Purpose-built flats make up 87.0% of homes, and the age split runs both ways. A fifth (20.7%) of homes are older than 1900, the converted Victorian warehouses among them, and a quarter (25.5%) date from 2000 or later. In the older buildings we find more wool; the newer blocks mostly have a tough synthetic carpet and a concierge desk.

Renting is the bigger tenure. Just under half of homes (48.3%) are let privately, against 36.5% lived in by owners, so tenancy turnover keeps us busy around the station. Large homes are rare, at 3.8% with four or more bedrooms, and the usual job is a bedroom and a lounge. In a one-bed flat near Cooper’s Row, those two rooms together cost £79.

Tower Gateway and the Georgian Crescent

A single pedestrian crossing from Tower Hill, Tower Gateway sits at the eastern edge of the City around the DLR terminus on the Minories. The homes are almost all flats, some in newer blocks along the Minories and Mansell Street, others in the conservation streets to the west. That is where George Dance the Younger laid out America Square, The Crescent and the Circus for Sir Benjamin Hammett between 1767 and 1774, the first scheme of its kind in London and modelled on Bath. Bombing in the Second World War wrecked most of it. The Crescent’s houses were rebuilt after the war to their old Georgian form, and behind them stands one of the best surviving stretches of the Roman and medieval City wall.

Is there anywhere to stop on Tower Hill?

Not on the main road. Tower Hill is a London distributor road run by Transport for London, carrying heavy traffic and lorries, so the van never waits on it. We come in from the City side and use the streets behind Trinity Square, wherever the markings allow. The whole City is a controlled parking zone, Monday to Friday from 7am to 7pm and Saturday from 7am to 11am, with pay bays settled through RingGo. On a yellow line without kerb marks, the City allows up to 40 minutes to load or unload, enough to carry the kit in and run the hose.

Inside, the buildings set the pace. In a big converted building the corridor from the lift to your door can be long, so we bring hoses that reach. In a serviced block, give the front desk our name and the time, and book any goods lift for the slot. Clear ornaments and anything stored under the bed before we arrive.

Cleaning methods for flats near the Tower

For the carpets in these flats we use hot-water extraction, or steam carpet cleaning, which rinses the pile and draws most of the moisture back out so a room is dry within 6 to 7 hours. Leather three-seaters, fabric sofas and curtains are handled through our upholstery cleaning service, matched to the material so nothing over-wets or shrinks. A good wool rug from an open-plan living area is cleaned where it lies through our rug cleaning service, with the coffee mark at the kitchen end pre-treated first. We cover the rest of the City of London at the same fixed prices, along with neighbouring Fenchurch Street and Aldgate.

Tower Hill residents ask

Which streets around Tower Hill and Trinity Square do you cover?

The EC3 and EC3N streets around the Tower: Trinity Square, Cooper’s Row, Pepys Street, Crutched Friars, Savage Gardens, Muscovy Street and Seething Lane, The Crescent and the Minories, and out through the wider EC3 postcode. Flats and offices are both fine. If your block is near the station, Tower Gateway or the gardens, you are inside our patch.

Where do your cleaners park near Trinity Square?

The whole City is a controlled parking zone, enforced Monday to Friday 7am to 7pm and Saturday 7am to 11am, with no ordinary residents’ bays on the street. We work from a paid bay or a loading stop and carry our gear in from there, and we run our own water and power off the van. Tell us the building and we sort access before we arrive.

Can you come at the weekend so it does not clash with work?

Yes. A lot of people around Tower Hill are at a desk all week, so Saturday and early-evening slots are among the most common we book. We turn up when arranged, keep things discreet in a shared building, and the price we agree beforehand is the price on the invoice once the rooms are measured.

How long do carpets and curtains take to dry here?

Most carpets are dry within 6 to 7 hours because the machine pulls the water back out as it cleans. In an inner flat with little airflow it can run a bit longer, so we open what we can and leave you clear on when to walk on it. Curtains cleaned in place dry in a similar window and do not come down for long.

My flat faces the main road. Will the grey traffic film come out?

Usually, yes. The City’s own appraisal notes high levels of traffic pollution on Tower Hill, and in a flat facing it a fine grey film settles in the carpet by the windows and in the curtain hems. Hot-water extraction lifts it well from a synthetic pile. On pale wool that has collected it for years, the edge of the room may stay a shade darker, and we point that out before we begin.

Can you clean floor-length curtains without taking them down?

Yes, that is how we normally do it. We test a hidden part of the fabric first, then clean the curtains where they hang with low moisture, so lined and interlined pairs keep their shape and length. They dry in about the same time as a carpet. Very fragile or silk curtains we look at first and advise on before quoting.

Every clean is backed by our re-clean guarantee: if a treated area does not come up as agreed, we return and put it right. We are fully insured and DBS-checked, which matters in serviced and shared buildings, and we have cleaned carpets, upholstery and rugs across the City of London and the rest of London since 2009.

What our customers say in Tower Hill.

★★★★★
Office turned flat near the Tower and the lounge carpet had a red wine spill from a work do at home. They came on a Saturday so it didn't clash with the week. Stain gone, no fuss, very professional.

Floor to ceiling curtains in the flat had a faint musty smell from being shut while I travelled for work. Cleaned on site, no shrinking, and the smell is completely gone. Very happy with the service.

We had a New Year do in the flat and somebody trod red wine right into the cream bedroom carpet. I genuinely thought that was that. The chap who came was brilliant, worked at it patiently and it lifted completely. Worth every penny for the peace of mind.

Tan leather three seater in the lounge had gone dull and a bit sticky near the headrests. They cleaned and conditioned it and the colour came back beautifully. Felt supple again. Booked it round my work hours which was appreciated as I am in the office most days.

Two fabric armchairs and a footstool, all looking tired. The difference after was night and day, especially a greasy mark on one arm where someone had clearly eaten a takeaway. Quick, professional and left the place tidy.
