What Turnpike Lane homes are like
Turnpike Lane is the A504, running east to west for a little under a mile from Wightman Road to the junction with Green Lanes and Wood Green High Road. The station and bus station sit at the eastern end, opposite Ducketts Common, and the homes around them are the northern rungs of the Harringay Ladder. Nearly all of it is late Victorian and Edwardian terrace, built by speculative developers between 1880 and 1900, two and three storeys, with bay windows, sash frames and the odd date stone over the door. The build quality was patchy at the time, and Hornsey Council made the builders pull some houses down and start again, so you get solid runs next to ones that have always moved a little.
Roads like Wightman Road, Westbury Avenue, Frobisher Road, Beresford Road and Falkland Road are all classic Ladder terraces, and a large share of them are now split into flats. The originals often survive under the carpet, boards on the upper floors and tiles in the hall, which is why the tiled-and-grouted entrance is such a common sight here. Turnpike Lane Underground station, one of Charles Holden’s tall brick designs, puts you on the Piccadilly line between Manor House and Wood Green, and the bus station beside it feeds the whole area. Green Lanes, the food street of Turkish and Cypriot grills and bakeries, starts at the common and runs south, so a good deal of the traffic through these front doors has come off a busy pavement.
