By 1780 a coach called the Wimbledon Machine was running from the Rose and Crown in the Village to Charing Cross three days a week, a two-hour trip. The Village has kept many of its old houses since, and plenty of its family homes still have fitted wool carpet. London Carpet Cleaning has worked across Wimbledon Village, SW19, since 2009, from £36 a room, and carpets are dry within 6 to 7 hours.

The old village at the top of the hill

The Village is the older, higher part of Wimbledon, fronting the Common at the top while the station sits down the hill. It grew up here partly because of the ground: the subsoil is gravel that drains fast, a real asset before damp-proof courses, and that is a large part of why so many seventeenth and eighteenth-century buildings survive. In 1588 Thomas Cecil built the first of Wimbledon’s great manor houses and turned a small, isolated village into a retreat for wealthy Londoners.

The Victorians filled in the rest. Wimbledon’s population went from 4,650 in 1861 to about 25,000 by the 1890s, and the big late-Victorian and Edwardian houses along The Ridgway and Church Road belong to that growth, with interwar houses after them. In 1976 the council made one large Wimbledon Conservation Area here, and in February 1987 split it into three: Wimbledon North, Wimbledon Village and Wimbledon West. Most of the houses we visit sit in one of them, so the stock has stayed largely intact, with proper hallways and deep staircases.

The climb up Wimbledon Hill Road from the station is the reason most owners drive or take the 93 bus when they have a load to carry. Church Road runs past the All England Lawn Tennis Club, and the Common, with its windmill and bridleways, sits right at the top. For a carpet, that closeness to wet grass and horse tracks matters more than it sounds.

Village homes by the numbers

Flats in purpose-built blocks50.5%
Detached houses10.5%
Rented privately41.5%
One-bedroom homes22.1%
Built before 190023.0%
Built 1973 to 199923.8%

The postcard picture of big family houses is only half the story. Half the homes in this census area (50.5%) are flats in purpose-built blocks, the VOA dates almost a quarter of homes (23.8%) to 1973 to 1999, and private renting is very high at 41.5%. So alongside the drawing rooms and wool stair runners, we do a great many one and two-bedroom flats, often on a tenancy deadline: 22.1% of homes have a single bedroom. A two-bedroom flat with its lounge costs £115.

The houses are still there in strength. Nearly a quarter of homes (23.0%) were built before 1900, and 10.5% are detached, which is high for London. That is where the wool is: wool twist or wool Berber on the stairs and landing, holding the foot traffic that comes off the Common all year. For a period semi with three bedrooms, its lounge and the stairs, the bill comes to £192.

Parking in the Village, and the fortnight that changes it

Most of the Village sits in Merton controlled parking zones. The core Village zones run Monday to Saturday from 8.30am to 6.30pm, while a few others, such as VNe, run on weekdays only, 10am to 4pm. We carry our own equipment and pay or load on the day, so you do not need to find us a permit; a driveway or a visitor bay outside your door saves time.

The Championships change the picture for two weeks. In 2026 the tennis ran from 29 June to 12 July, and during it Church Road and Parkside, among other roads, had parking controls from 8.30am to 11.30pm every day, while bays in zones VC, VN, VNe and VOn could be suspended between 8.30am and 8.30pm. Some roads near the club close to anyone without a pass from the All England Club. If you live near Church Road, book either side of the tournament; the rest of the year the Village is easy to work in.

Inside, plan around the stairs. Clear the hall table and anything stored on the treads, and in a flat let us know about the lift and the entry code.

Wool stairs and house-sale cleans

The common job here is wool. We see grey traffic lanes on light hall and stair carpet and the odd felt-tip mark a child has left on a step. We clean and feed leather suites that have gone sticky on the arms, and clean wool rugs that have had a pet accident, in the room where they lie. A fair number of cleans are house-sale jobs, where the entrance hall and the front-door traffic line need to come up sharp before viewings.

On a wool carpet that has been walked grey for years, a deep clean restores the colour and lifts the soil, but it will not rebuild pile that has been crushed flat in the worst traffic lane. We will tell you on sight whether you are paying for a real refresh or chasing wear that only new carpet fixes.

Carpet and upholstery cleaning in the Village

Most Village bookings are hot-water extraction, our steam carpet cleaning, which rinses wool stairs and lounges properly and leaves them dry within 6 to 7 hours. We also clean sofas and leather suites with our upholstery cleaning, and we clean wool rugs in the home with rug cleaning, and a silk rug needs a photo sent first so we can say whether it is safe to clean on site. We cover the rest of Merton on the same prices, and reach over to Kingston Vale on the far side of the Common.

Asked in the Village

Which Wimbledon Village streets and postcodes do you cover?

We cover the whole of SW19 in and around the Village, including the High Street, Church Road, The Ridgway and the roads running down toward the Common and the station. If you are at the top by the windmill or down nearer Wimbledon Hill Road, it is the same crew and the same fixed price.

Parking is permit-only in the Village. How do you manage it?

Most of the Village sits in Merton’s zones, VC and VN among them, which run Monday to Saturday from 8.30am to 6.30pm. We carry our own equipment and pay or load on the day, so you do not need to find us a permit. Tell us if your road is tight and we will plan the van around it.

Do you get mud and grass off carpets near the Common?

Yes, and it is a big part of the work up here. Walkers and dogs bring Common mud and grass straight onto hall and stair carpet, and over a wet winter that greys the pile. Hot-water extraction flushes the soil out of wool so it does not smear, which is why we use it on entrance halls.

How long will wool carpets take to dry in a Wimbledon Village house?

Most carpets are dry within 6 to 7 hours, because we extract the bulk of the moisture and never soak the pile. Heavy wool, common in the family houses along The Ridgway and Church Road, and a cold day take a little longer. Open a window a crack or leave the heating low and a stair carpet cleaned in the morning is walkable by the afternoon.

We live off Church Road. Can you come during the Championships?

We can, but it is harder for both of us. During the fortnight, Church Road has parking controls until 11.30pm and bays nearby may be suspended, and some roads by the club need a pass to enter. Unless it is urgent, book the week before or the week after. If it cannot wait, give us your road and we will work out where the van can legally stop.

I live over a shop on the High Street. Where do you unload?

Usually in the nearest pay-and-display or loading bay in the VC zone, then we carry the kit up. Flats over shops and other conversions make up 3.1% of homes here, and they are some of the most awkward jobs we do, with narrow stairs and no lift. A morning slot, before the High Street gets busy, makes the carry easier.

Every clean is backed by our re-clean guarantee: if a patch is not right, we come back and put it right at no charge. We are fully insured, our cleaners are DBS-checked, and we have worked Wimbledon Village and the rest of Merton since 2009.

What our customers say in Village.

★★★★★
Had our cream three seater and two armchairs done before the family came for Sukkot. The lounge gets a lot of use and the sofa had gone dull, but it looks proper again now. The chap took his shoes off without being asked and worked quietly. Very pleased.

Stair runner and the landing cleaned. There was a felt tip mark from my youngest on the second step that I'd given up on, and it's gone. Polite young man, dried by teatime, fair price for the work.

Our brown leather suite was looking tired and a bit sticky on the arms. They cleaned and fed the leather and it feels supple again, no greasy patches. Careful around the skirting and tidy throughout. Recommended to my neighbour already.

Heavy lined curtains in the dining room cleaned without taking them down. They'd gone musty from the radiator below and now they smell fresh. No shrinkage at all. The man was courteous and explained what he was doing. Lovely job.

Lounge and hall carpets cleaned ahead of us putting the house on the market. Good result and the high traffic by the front door came up well. The price did creep up a little once he measured the hall properly, but he was upfront about it. Tidy work.
