Wallend takes its name from an old embankment wall that stopped the River Roding flooding the far end of East Ham. The streets built behind it, Wall End Road, Henley Road, Browning Road and the roads off Barking Road, are now full of family houses with carpeted stairs. London Carpet Cleaning has cleaned here since 2009, from £36 a room, and a cleaned carpet is dry within 6 to 7 hours.

A wall against the Roding and the streets behind it

Wallend, often written Wall End, sits at the eastern end of East Ham, on the Barking side, north of Beckton. The “end” in the name means the outlying part of the old parish, and the “wall” was the bank that held the river back. Housing arrived in the building boom at the end of the 19th century and kept coming: bay-fronted terraces and semis with brick facades and small front gardens, then inter-war houses, then council blocks after the Second World War, among them Duke’s Court on Barking Road, built in the late 1940s.

Many of the houses are three-bed family homes, often with several generations living together, and plenty have had the front room knocked through or the upstairs part-converted. The nearest station is East Ham, a short walk west, with District and Hammersmith and City trains. Central Park is the green space most people use. East Ham’s council bought the grounds of an early 18th-century house for it in 1896 and opened the park on 5 July 1898; it covers 9.9 hectares, and its restoration was finished in 2007.

Busy households and the stairs

The job here is busy-household carpet. Lots of people come and go all day, so the wear lands on the stairs and the route through to the kitchen, and the front room takes the brunt of family gatherings and festive cooking. We lift a lot of food and drink, turmeric and curry near the sofa and fruit juice or lassi on the living-room carpet. Cream and pale stair carpets are common, and they show every footprint, so they come up dramatically once they are properly cleaned.

There is a limit. A turmeric or curry-oil mark that has sat for months can shift a long way without going completely, and an old grease stain in a high-traffic spot may not return to the original colour. We will tell you on the doorstep if we think something is set in, before you pay a penny.

Owners, renters and council tenants in near-equal shares

Homes in the Wallend South census area (Newham 023)
Homes and householdsShare
Owned, outright or with a mortgage35.7%
Rented privately33.6%
Social rented29.7%
Purpose-built flats26.7%
Built before 190012.5%
Built 1945 to 197227.8%

The census splits Wallend three ways. About a third of homes are owned (35.7%), a third are rented privately (33.6%) and nearly as many are social rented (29.7%). Owners tend to book the stairs and lounge before a celebration; tenants more often need a check-out clean with a receipt for the agent.

The building dates correct the idea that this is all Victorian. Only 12.5% of homes predate 1900, while 27.8% went up between 1945 and 1972, and purpose-built flats make up 26.7% of the stock. Those post-war flats are usually reached by a shared stair. A two-bedroom flat in one of the post-war blocks, living room included, costs £115. Most homes (74.9%) heat with mains gas, and gas radiators on low dry a carpet well; electric-only heating covers just 7.2%.

Two-hour bays, Barking Road and getting the hose in

Wallend’s terraces are inside Newham’s East Ham parking zone, which applies Monday to Saturday between 8am and 6.30pm. The pay-by-phone bays on Sibley Grove, Caledon Road, Wall End Road and Browning Road all stop at two hours. A front room and stairs fits inside that, but a whole house does not, so on a big booking we either move the van at the halfway point or ask whether you have a visitor permit to spare. Sunday is free of zone controls.

None of these terraces has a front drive, so the van pulls up at the kerb and the hose runs in through the front door, with the cable kept tidy across the path. If you live on Barking Road itself, we stop in the nearest side road and carry the kit round. Take shoes and coats off the bottom stair, and if the front room has a big rug on top of the carpet, tell us when you book and we will clean both in the same visit.

Extraction, upholstery and rug washing for Wallend homes

For carpets and stairs we use hot-water extraction, the steam carpet cleaning method that rinses the detergent and most of the moisture back out, so the pile is dry within 6 to 7 hours and not soaking for a day. Sofas, armchairs and dining chairs go through our upholstery cleaning service, adjusted to the fabric. Larger patterned rugs and runners are cleaned in the room through rug cleaning, vacuumed and pre-treated first, then shampooed and rinsed on your floor. We cover the rest of Newham the same way, and neighbouring East Ham and Cyprus too.

Questions from Wallend households

Which Wall End streets and postcodes do you cover?

All of the Wall End part of E6: Wall End Road itself, Henley Road, Browning Road, Caledon Road, Halley Road and Sibley Grove, and the streets either side of Barking Road down towards the boundary. If you are near East Ham station or Central Park you are well inside our area, and there is no extra charge for being at the far end.

Where does the van go on these terraced roads?

On the street, as close to your door as the bays allow. The Wall End terraces have no front drives and sit inside the East Ham zone, Monday to Saturday, so we book a two-hour bay on the parking app or use a visitor permit, and run the hose in from the van. Let us know your road when you book and we sort it before the day.

Can you clean before Eid or a family gathering?

Yes, and it is one of the most common bookings we take here. Plenty of Wall End homes want the front room and stairs done before family come round for Eid or a celebration, so book a few days ahead at busy times and we will fit you in. Carpets take up to 6 to 7 hours to dry, so a morning slot leaves the room ready by the evening.

Do you clean children’s mattresses as well as carpets?

We do. Children’s mattresses after a bug or an accident are a regular call in these family households, and we clean and sanitise them so no smell is left behind. A mattress dries faster than a carpet, usually well within a few hours, and we can do it on the same visit as your stairs or front room.

Why is it called Wall End?

Because of an embankment. A wall along the River Roding once stopped it flooding the “end”, the outlying part, of East Ham, and the name stayed when the area was built over from the late 19th century. It is still written both ways, Wallend and Wall End, and the council ward uses Wall End.

My front room is knocked through. How is that priced?

As a through-lounge, from £61, which covers the whole run from the bay window to the back wall. If the two rooms are still separate, we price the front room as a living room from £43 and the back room as a bedroom-size room from £36, so £79 for the pair. Tell us which you have and the quote is fixed.

Every clean carries our re-clean guarantee: if a treated area dries and you are not happy, we come back and redo it. Our cleaners hold DBS checks and wear covers on their shoes indoors, the business is fully insured, and Wallend has been on our list since 2009.

What our customers say in Wallend.

★★★★★
Got the front room and stairs done before Eid when we had the whole family coming round. There was an old turmeric stain near the sofa from a spilt curry that I thought would never come out, and it did. So happy with it.

Big patterned rug in the living room that the kids had spilt mango lassi all over. Picked up, cleaned and brought back within the week looking spotless. Very reasonable price too.

Had both kids' mattresses done after one of them had a tummy bug all over it. Cleaned and sanitised properly, no smell and dried quicker than I expected. Will use again.

Stairs were filthy with everyone going up and down all day in a busy household. The cream carpet looks like the day it went in. Polite, on time and put covers on their shoes which I appreciated.

Three seater and two chairs cleaned. They look much fresher and the musty smell from the corner one is gone. One small mark on the arm didn't fully shift but the lad was honest and said it had probably set in too long. Still very good overall.

Booked the lounge after we'd had a kids' birthday party and there was squashed chocolate and juice everywhere. Came up really well. Took longer to dry than the two hours they quoted, more like the whole evening, but the result was worth it.
