Beer was brewed on the Ram Brewery site by the Wandle from at least 1533 until Young’s closed it in 2006, and the Ram Quarter flats now stand around the listed brewery buildings, a short walk from the gault-brick terraces of the Tonsleys north of East Hill. London Carpet Cleaning has worked in Wandsworth Town, SW18, since 2009. Rooms start at £36, and most carpets are dry within 6 to 7 hours.

Brewery town on the Wandle
Wandsworth grew up at the lowest crossing of the River Wandle, and industry shaped it. The Young family ran the Ram Brewery from 1831 until it closed in 2006, 175 years in all, and the Grade II* listed brewery complex now holds a small working brewery and a heritage centre inside the Ram Quarter. The Wandsworth Gas Company opened its works on the west side of Fairfield Street in 1835 and spread along the river frontage until it shut in 1971. The site of its last gasholder, on Fairfield Street, is now being redeveloped.
The older housing is mostly Victorian and almost all of it two storeys. North of East Hill, in the Tonsleys, two or three local builders laid out a grid of terraces in gault brick with Gothic Revival detailing, and the council’s appraisal calls it a good example of late Victorian suburban building. Wandsworth Town Conservation Area was designated in 1984 and extended in 1989, and Old York Road has a conservation area of its own. Alma Road, the route up from Wandsworth Town station, mixes shops with ordinary Victorian terraces. Garratt Lane and the Southside Shopping Centre are a few minutes south.
Along the Thames the picture changes again. Riverside Quarter, built by Frasers Property at Point Pleasant by Wandsworth Park, has 554 apartments in six blocks, and the Ram Quarter has added its own flats and loft apartments around the old brewery yard. Wandsworth Town station, on the South Western Railway line through Clapham Junction to Waterloo, sits between the two halves.
Who lives in the riverside census area?
| Homes that are | Share |
|---|---|
| Built since 2000 | 47.5% |
| Built before 1919 | 39.0% |
| Purpose-built flats | 55.1% |
| Rented privately | 44.0% |
| Two bedrooms | 45.0% |
| Heated by electricity only | 26.6% |
The census does not use the name Wandsworth Town. The station falls in a neighbourhood it calls Putney Town & Wandsworth Park, which follows the river from Putney’s eastern edge to the Wandle and takes in the Ram Quarter and Riverside Quarter; the Tonsleys terraces are counted next door, with Clapham Junction & East Hill. That explains the figures. Almost half the homes here (47.5%) were built in 2000 or later, and 55.1% are purpose-built flats, so a typical job is a flat in a block with a lift and a concierge, where the fitted carpet is still fairly new and often pale.
The other 39.0% of homes are older than 1919, and those are the terraces with wool on the stairs. Renting is common: 44.0% of households rent privately, so a lot of carpets are cleaned between one tenancy and the next. Two-bedroom homes are the biggest group (45.0%), and for one of those flats, two bedrooms plus the living room, the bill is £115. Electric-only heating is high at 26.6%, a sign of the new blocks, and it still dries a carpet well if you run it for an hour once we have gone.

Getting the van into Wandsworth Town
The town centre is ringed by priority red routes, including Wandsworth High Street and Armoury Way, so we cannot stop on the main roads at all. The residential streets fall in the Wandsworth Town zone, split into W1 to W4. In W1, north of the High Street, some roads have controls from 8.30am to 6.30pm, Monday to Saturday, and others are for permit holders only from 9.30am to 8pm every day, so a visitor permit from you matters there. W2, by King George’s Park, runs either 9.30am to 4.30pm or a single permit-only hour from 10.30am, weekdays only. On Garratt Lane most bays are pay-and-display with a one-hour limit, too short for a whole flat.
The new blocks bring their own rules. Wandsworth often leaves new developments out of the parking zone, so residents there may have no permits to lend. In the Ram Quarter or Riverside Quarter, let the concierge know we are coming and book the lift if your block asks for it. Tell us where the loading bay is, too. In the Tonsleys terraces, the machine stays by the door and the hose runs up a straight stair, so clear the hall and the treads before we arrive.
Terraces, wool and the Wandle path
Most of our terrace work here falls into two kinds. One is the period house whose stairs and landing have taken months of traffic, often muddy, with King George’s Park and the Wandle path a short walk away. The other is wool, or a wool mix, laid over a solid Victorian floor and holding on to a pet accident or kitchen grease, and it needs a proper hot-water extraction to come back. Velvet and fabric sofas in the same front rooms pick up the same marks and clean up well before a birthday dinner.
We also tell you what will not shift completely. An old ink mark from a leaking pen, or a dark patch worn into the top step after years of feet, will usually fade without vanishing, and we say so when we quote.

What else the van can clean
Bedrooms, stairs and the lounge get hot-water extraction, the method behind our steam carpet cleaning service; it rinses the pile and leaves it dry within 6 to 7 hours. Velvet and fabric sofas go through our upholstery cleaning, and a stained or patterned rug is cleaned in your home as specialist rug cleaning on the same visit. Prices are identical across the rest of Wandsworth, and we cover the wider south-west as far as Kingston Vale.
Asked by SW18 customers
Which Wandsworth Town streets do you cover, from the Tonsleys to the Ram Quarter?
All of SW18 around the town centre: Old York Road, East Hill and the Tonsleys, Garratt Lane down to the Southside Shopping Centre, Fairfield Street, Alma Road and Buckhold Road. We also clean in the new blocks by the river, from Riverside Quarter to the Ram Quarter. If you live near the Earlsfield end, send the postcode and we can confirm it on the call.
Is parking a problem on the day?
It can be, which is why we plan it. Most residential streets are in zones W1 to W4, and in parts of W1 the controls run until 8pm and on Sundays. A visitor permit or a bay outside is ideal. Give us the road at booking and the van is planned around it, so no time goes on hunting for a space.
Can you get a puppy or pet accident out of a carpet?
Usually, yes. A fresh accident in the middle of a lounge carpet responds well, because we treat the stain and the smell at the source. Older, dried-in patches that have soaked through to the underlay are harder, and we will tell you plainly before we start.
How long until a carpet is dry in a Wandsworth Town terrace?
Most carpets are dry within 6 to 7 hours, so a morning clean is ready by the evening. Thick wool in the older terraces of the Tonsleys, and ground-floor flats near the Wandle, can hold damp a little longer, so we open windows and keep air moving before we go.
Do you clean flats in the Ram Quarter and Riverside Quarter?
Yes, often. These are the blocks behind the census figure of 47.5% of homes built since 2000. The carpets tend to be pale and fairly new, so they show traffic lanes early but come back well. We need the concierge told and somewhere to stop the van; once that is set, a two-bedroom flat is a short job.
My flat only has electric heating. Will the carpet still dry?
Yes. More than a quarter of homes here (26.6%) are heated by electricity alone, most of them in the newer blocks. The machine takes out most of the water, so the heaters on low for an hour and a window open, or the ventilation running, finish the job. Keep furniture off the carpet until it is dry, which takes up to 6 to 7 hours.
Each SW18 job is covered by our re-clean guarantee, and a patch that comes back gets a free second visit. Our cleaners hold DBS checks, we carry full insurance, and south-west London has been our working ground since 2009.
