Building on Wembley Hill began around 1906, the year the Great Central opened Wembley Hill station, today’s Wembley Stadium station, and there were shops on Wembley Hill Road by 1913. A century on, the streets around it hold Edwardian houses, 1930s semis and a great many new flats. London Carpet Cleaning has worked Wembley, HA0 and HA9, since 2009. Prices start from £36 a room, and carpets are dry within 6 to 7 hours.

From pleasure gardens to the arch
Wembley Park began as a day out. In the 1880s Sir Edward Watkin of the Metropolitan Railway bought land for pleasure gardens, opened Wembley Park station in 1894 to bring the crowds, and started a steel tower meant to rival the Eiffel Tower. It got to 45 metres before the marshy ground beat it, and demolition began in 1904. Work on the Empire Stadium started on the tower’s site in January 1922, the British Empire Exhibition followed in 1924 and 1925, and the new stadium with its arch opened in 2007 with room for 90,000.
The houses came with the railways. Wembley Hill grew from 1906, and by 1920 building ran continuously from Wembley to Sudbury and Alperton. The Metroland streets that fan out from Forty Lane and East Lane are lined with 1930s semis, bay-fronted and built for families, and a lot of them still have fitted carpet running up the stairs and across the bedrooms; from 1931 flats went up on Empire Way and Forty Lane too. South towards Ealing Road and the Alperton boundary the stock turns to terraces and converted flats, busier homes with more foot traffic over the carpet.
Then there is the newer Wembley, the 85-acre regeneration around Wembley Park station, where Quintain’s scheme takes in more than 7,000 flats, many of them build-to-rent with pale, low-pile carpet fitted throughout. Wembley Park station runs the Jubilee and Metropolitan lines, Wembley Central on the High Road adds the Bakerloo and the Overground, and Wembley Stadium station is on the Chiltern line, so we are rarely far from a stop when we load in.
Wembley East: the census figures
| Homes | Share |
|---|---|
| Built 2000 or later | 36.5% |
| Built 1919 to 1944 | 34.2% |
| Built before 1919 | 23.6% |
| Purpose-built flats | 34.1% |
| Terraced houses | 22.8% |
| Three bedrooms | 36.7% |
| Rented privately | 45.7% |
The census area here, Wembley East, lies in Wembley Hill ward, east of Wembley Central, and its age profile is unusual. The largest single group, 36.5% of homes, was built in 2000 or later, yet almost a quarter (23.6%) predates 1919, the Edwardian streets of the first Wembley Hill boom, with the interwar houses (34.2%) in between. Hardly anything was built from 1945 to 1999.
That gives two Wembleys in one postcode. In the flats (34.1% of homes are purpose-built), the job is a bedroom or two and a living room; with 45.7% of households renting privately, much of it is end-of-tenancy work for agents. In the older houses, terraces and semis with three bedrooms (36.7% of homes), it is the whole set with the stairs. In one of those, three bedrooms plus a through-lounge and the stairs come to £210. Some 2.1% of homes have no central heating; in those we advise on airflow before we leave.

Festival cleans and greige carpet
The pattern splits by the kind of home. In the family semis it is whole-house jobs, often booked before Navratri or Diwali or a christening, where every room and the stairs get done in one visit and need to be dry by the evening. In the new Wembley Park flats it is the opposite problem: greige carpet that shows every footprint and tea-ring within a year of moving in. We also do a steady run of fabric sofas and lined curtains, the latter cleaned in place without dropping them off the rail.
One limit to know about: on the older bay-fronted streets we sometimes lift a carpet that has been laid over a damp solid floor, and steam cleaning will freshen the pile but it will not cure damp coming up from below. If that is what is going on, we will tell you on the day, before you pay for a clean that will not hold.
Event days, permit zones and tower lifts
Wembley Stadium decides the calendar. On event days Brent restricts parking across a wide protective zone: from 8am to midnight on the main roads to the stadium and in the controlled parking zones inside the scheme, and from 10am to midnight in residential streets without a CPZ. Residents in the zone but outside a CPZ can buy event day permits from Brent, valid for three years. We plan Wembley jobs around the fixture list and never load kit on the wrong afternoon.
On ordinary days the High Road streets have their own controls. Brent’s zones W and E, around Wembley Central and the Tokyngton side, run from 8am to 9pm, seven days a week, and zone C, which reaches towards Sudbury, from 8am to 6.30pm Monday to Saturday. In those streets we need a visitor session for the van. In the towers either side of Olympic Way, access is by lift and loading bay; book the goods lift with your building management if it needs booking, and tell us the bay to use.

North Wembley, Wembley Park and our services
North Wembley is quieter, mostly 1930s semis off East Lane with its own station on the Bakerloo line and the Overground Lioness line. The work there leans towards stairs, landings and bedrooms where the same wool-blend carpet has been down a long time. Wembley Park, either side of Olympic Way and the Bobby Moore Bridge, is almost all flats, often let furnished, so we get a lot of end-of-tenancy carpet cleans and the odd sofa before a checkout.
The bulk of what we do is hot-water extraction, what most people call steam carpet cleaning, which rinses the detergent back out so the carpet dries faster and stays cleaner for longer. We also clean sofas, armchairs and dining chairs through our upholstery cleaning service, and we clean loose rugs in your home with a deep shampoo and rinse through our rug cleaning. If you need the same done elsewhere in the borough, we cover the rest of Brent, along with nearby Preston and Tokyngton.
Wembley booking questions
Which Wembley postcodes do you cover, from Wembley Park to Ealing Road?
We cover all of Wembley: the HA9 side around Wembley Park, the stadium, the High Road and the semis off Forty Lane, and the HA0 side towards Ealing Road, Alperton and North Wembley. If you are on the Brent border and not sure which side your road falls, send the postcode with your enquiry and we will confirm before booking anything in.
Can you still park to do a job on an event day?
Near the stadium it depends on the fixture, because the event-day scheme locks residential streets to permit holders from 10am until midnight, and main roads and controlled zones from 8am. The simplest fix is to book a clean for a day with no event on, and we will check the Wembley calendar against your date when you call so there are no surprises at the kerb.
Do you do whole-house carpets before a family event?
Yes, that is one of our most common Wembley bookings. We can clean every room plus the stairs and landing in a single visit, and we time it so the carpets have their 6 to 7 hours to dry, which matters when relatives are arriving for Navratri, Diwali or a gathering. Tell us the room count and we will give you a fixed total up front.
How long will carpet take to dry in a Wembley 1930s semi?
Most carpets are dry within 6 to 7 hours and fully dry by the evening. Thicker wool in the older semis off Forty Lane and East Lane holds a little more water and can stay slightly damp longer, so we open windows and use air movers on the bigger jobs. In a ground-floor flat with less airflow, keep a window cracked overnight.
Can you clean a flat in one of the Wembley Park towers?
Yes, regularly. Tell us the building and floor, and check whether your block needs the goods lift or loading bay booked in advance. We lay protection in the corridor, and clean a two-bedroom flat with its living room for £115. If you are moving out, we leave a dated receipt for the agent’s check-out.
Do you clean the older houses on Wembley Hill?
Yes. Almost a quarter of homes in this part of Wembley were built before 1919, and those Edwardian houses have a straight staircase and a hall that takes the full traffic of the house. We clean the stairs from £41 a flight, with low moisture on any wool, and pay extra attention to the bottom treads by the front door.
Every clean comes with our re-clean guarantee: if a spot you pointed out does not come up, we come back and put it right at no extra cost. We are fully insured and DBS-checked, and we have cleaned carpets, sofas and rugs across Wembley since 2009.
