West Drayton’s resident parking scheme began in September 2010 on a handful of roads south of the station and now runs to seven zones, a fair measure of how the town has filled with commuters since. Its homes run from listed houses on the Green to 1930s semis and the new streets of Drayton Garden Village. London Carpet Cleaning cleans them all in West Drayton, UB7, from £36 a room, dry within 6 to 7 hours.

A town in layers, from the Green to Porters Way

West Drayton is a proper town, and its housing reads in layers. The historic core is the conservation area around the Green, once called Town Street, with Grade II listed houses and the old Kings Head; off it runs Money Lane, where the Napoleon Cottages still carry their name. St Martin’s church, first built in the 13th century, stands at the north-east end of the Green. Around that core the stock turns suburban: long runs of 1920s and 1930s semis and terraces, then post-war housing and later closes and flats on streets like Swan Road, Drayton Gardens and Warwick Road.

The newest layer is Drayton Garden Village, off Porters Way, on the site of the old National Air Traffic Services headquarters. The outline plan Hillingdon approved set out 773 homes there: 503 flats and studios and 270 houses, most of the houses with three bedrooms, and 1,085 parking spaces. What ties the town together is the station, on the Elizabeth line, with Stockley Park a short hop east along Stockley Road. That mix of commuters and office workers means plenty of dual-income family homes and a steady flow of rented flats. The Grand Union Canal and the Colne Valley run along the western edge, so towpath grit finds its way indoors there too.

The eastern side of town, in census figures

Homes that areShare
Semi-detached houses35.1%
Terraced houses26.4%
Three-bedroom homes46.2%
Built in 2000 or later33.0%
Rented from the council or a housing association26.6%
Shared ownership3.0%

The census splits West Drayton in two, and the page’s area is the eastern half, which does not include the Green: the VOA count finds no homes here (0.0%) built before 1919. What it does have is family houses. Semis (35.1%) and terraces (26.4%) make up most of the stock, and almost half of all homes (46.2%) have three bedrooms. Three bedrooms, a knocked-through lounge and the stairs in a West Drayton terrace add up to £210.

A third of homes (33.0%) went up in 2000 or later, which is Drayton Garden Village and the infill around it, and 3.0% are shared ownership, part-bought from a housing association. Those carpets are young and come up well. Another 26.6% of homes are rented from the council or a housing association, where we often clean at the end of a tenancy. One more figure: 23.7% of homes are heated by electricity alone, and in those we suggest a window open or the extractor running after the clean so the room dries on time.

Figures: ONS Census 2021 (Hillingdon 028) and VOA council tax stock, March 2024.

Stair paths and move-out deadlines

In the settled family homes off the Green and up through the 1930s streets, the work is worn stair and landing carpet, ground into a grimy central path by children running up and down, and front rooms marked with coffee rings before visitors come round. We bring stairs up tread by tread with a hand tool, working into the back of each step where the vacuum never reaches.

The other steady stream comes off the station and Stockley Park: flats and let houses that change hands quickly, where an agent wants the carpets right before a deposit is signed off. We get plenty of upholstery too, from a fabric corner sofa with a set-in takeaway stain to children’s mattresses that need freshening after illness. On a greasy curry mark that has soaked and set, or old pet urine gone through to the underlay, we improve a great deal and very often clear it, but we cannot always promise the very last faint shadow will lift. You hear what we expect before the machine goes on.

West Drayton’s seven parking zones

Hillingdon’s West Drayton scheme came into operation in September 2010 and has spread southwards from the station. WD1 sits just south of the railway, on Warwick Road, Brandville Road and Bellclose Road east of Station Road and part of Colham Mill Road to the west. WD2 covers Porters Way and the roads beside it, and grew with the new housing there. WD3 is centred on Frays Avenue, WD4 on Ferrers Avenue towards Swan Road, and WD5 to WD7 lie further south. North of the line, Yiewsley has its own zones, Y1 and Y2.

Inside a zone, the van needs a visitor voucher from you for the hours on the signs. Away from the zones most residential streets are open, and we park outside. At Drayton Garden Village the flats have allocated bays, so tell us if there is a visitor space we can use, and which floor you are on. We bring a long hose for terraces where the van has to sit a few doors down. Before we arrive, clear shoes and bags off the stairs and move anything fragile off the window sills.

Deep cleaning for UB7 homes

West Drayton bookings are mostly for hot-water extraction, and the steam carpet cleaning draws ground-in traffic and coffee rings out of the pile. We lift a takeaway stain from a corner sofa, or freshen a child’s mattress, with our upholstery cleaning, which covers fabric and leather settees and dining chairs too. We clean rugs as well, wool and shaggy included, in the home across UB7, with the rug cleaning carried out during the same visit. We treat the neighbouring parts of UB7 alike, Harmondsworth to the south and Yiewsley to the north, and the rest of Hillingdon beyond them.

Questions from West Drayton

Do you cover West Drayton from the Green to Porters Way?

All of UB7: the Green, Church Road and Money Lane, Porters Way, Swan Road, Warwick Road and Drayton Gardens, and out towards the canal and the Colne Valley. Yiewsley, Harmondsworth, Sipson and Longford are on the same fixed prices, and homes near the station or towards Stockley Park are well inside our area, with no charge for the visit.

Is parking a problem for the van near the station?

It depends where you are. Permit zones cover many roads close to the Elizabeth line station, including the Porters Way area and the streets around Swan Road and Ferrers Avenue, to keep commuters off them. If you live by the line, a visitor voucher helps and we bring a long hose to run straight in. Away from the station most residential streets are unrestricted and we park close.

Can you get carpets ready for a check-out near the station or Stockley Park?

Often, yes. A lot of the flats and let houses close to the station and the business park turn over quickly, and we clean the carpets to the standard an agent or landlord expects for a deposit return. Book with your inventory date in mind and we will have the carpets done and drying before the final walk-through, fitted around your moving date.

How long do carpets take to dry in an older West Drayton home?

Allow 6 to 7 hours to dry, because the final pass pulls most of the water out, and after a morning visit the stairs are back in normal use by the evening. A dense wool pile, or a downstairs room in a listed house near the Green with the windows kept shut, can need longer, so we open a window a crack or set a fan running. Keep to socks until everything is fully dry.

Which West Drayton parking zone am I in?

Check the sign at the end of your road, but as a guide: WD1 is the roads just south of the station, including Warwick Road and Bellclose Road; WD2 is Porters Way; WD3 is around Frays Avenue and WD4 around Ferrers Avenue. WD5 to WD7 are further south, and Y1 and Y2 are the Yiewsley side, north of the line. Tell us your road and we will check the hours.

Do you clean the houses at Drayton Garden Village, or only the flats?

Both. The plan for the site included 270 houses alongside the flats, and most of those houses have three bedrooms and a staircase, so the booking looks like any family house: bedrooms, lounge, hall and stairs. In the flats we use the lift for the kit. The carpets are young, so a first clean brings them back close to new.

Each West Drayton clean is covered by our re-clean guarantee: point out a spot that is not right and we come back and treat it again for free. We are fully insured and DBS-checked, and we have cleaned across West Drayton and the wider Hillingdon since 2009.

Our cream stair and landing carpet had a real grimy look from the kids running up and down. They came up beautifully, like new really. Punctual, friendly and left no mess at all. Would happily recommend.

Big fabric corner sofa with a curry stain from a takeaway night that had set in. They lifted it right out and the whole sofa smells fresh now. Really thorough and polite, took their shoes off at the door.

My large wool rug in the lounge had a pet accident from when we first got the puppy and the smell lingered. After they cleaned it the smell is completely gone and the colours look brighter. So pleased we didn't just bin it.

Had the lounge and hall cleaned before my wife's birthday party. Coffee rings and general wear all gone, looked spotless for the guests. Easy to book and very fair on price. Cheers.

Got the carpets done for moving out of our flat. Good job and the landlord was satisfied so we got the deposit back. They were a touch late arriving because of traffic on the Stockley Road, but they did message to let me know.

Got both kids' mattresses cleaned after they'd been ill over half term. They came up clean and fresh smelling. The price was a little higher than the phone quote once they saw there were two and one had a stain, but it was explained clearly and still reasonable.
