The Midland Railway opened its station on West End Lane on 1 March 1871, as West End for Kilburn and Hampstead, and the terraces on Iverson Road and Sumatra Road went up over the next quarter-century. Many of those houses are now upper and lower maisonettes. London Carpet Cleaning covers West Hampstead Thameslink, NW6, from £36 a room, with carpets dry within 6 to 7 hours.

A railway suburb of cramped terraces
This pocket of NW6 is almost all Victorian, and it was built fast. Before 1873 the British Land Company bought the old West End House estate and laid out Iverson Road, with Loveridge Road and Maygrove Road agreed in 1869; the first four cottages on Iverson Road went up in 1872. In 1883 houses were built on Dynham Road and Cotleigh Road over the grounds of Oaklands Hall, and between 1882 and 1894 builders put up 346 houses on Sumatra Road, Solent Road and the streets around them. The Victoria County History calls most of it terraced and cramped. Mostly local builders put it up, Reeder of Maygrove Road and Haines of Sherriff Road among them.
After several renamings the station became West Hampstead Thameslink in May 1988. It now stands beside the Overground and Jubilee line stations on West End Lane, and a good share of homes are let to commuters and change hands often. Up the lane the houses grow larger. St James’s Mansions went up in 1894 and Welbeck Mansions in 1897, red-brick blocks of flats above the shops, and the northern half of the lane up towards Fortune Green is now the West End Green Conservation Area. West End Green itself, with its mature trees and a granite drinking fountain dated 1897, is the patch of open ground a cleaner passes on the way up.
The post-war story is one of conversion. After 1945, the VCH notes, old houses were refurbished and converted into flats, with young single people replacing families. The newest change is off Maygrove Road, where Camden’s Liddell Road scheme pairs a new infant school for Kingsgate Primary, finished in December 2017, with 106 homes in blocks of five and eleven storeys by the railway.
Four homes in ten are converted flats
| Homes that are | Share |
|---|---|
| Flats in converted houses | 40.6% |
| Rented privately | 43.2% |
| Rented from the council | 20.8% |
| One-bedroom homes | 42.0% |
| Built before 1900 | 60.6% |
| Built since 2000 | 10.2% |
The station has no census area of its own. The neighbourhood that covers it is the one the ONS names Kilburn Grange, in Kilburn ward. Its figures fit what the history predicts. Six homes in ten (60.6%) were built before 1900, and 40.6% are flats inside converted houses: the maisonettes on Iverson Road and Sumatra Road, each with its own front door or a shared hall. One-bedroom homes are the largest group, at 42.0%, so a typical job is small: a bedroom and a living room, perhaps with a short internal stair.
Renting runs the calendar. With 43.2% of homes let privately and another 20.8% rented from the council, tenancies end in every month of the year, and a lot of our bookings here come a day or two before a check-out. Newer flats, the 10.2% of homes built since 2000, mostly have synthetic carpet that cleans and dries quickly. A one-bedroom lower maisonette off Iverson Road, bedroom and living room, comes to £79. In the 2.8% of homes without central heating, a fan heater or an open window does the job the radiators do elsewhere.
Figures: ONS Census 2021 (Camden 013) and VOA council tax stock, March 2024.
School street hours and three parking zones
The streets around the station are split between three of Camden’s controlled parking zones. Iverson Road, Maygrove Road, Loveridge Road, Dynham Road and the roads off Kilburn High Road are in CA-Q, the Kilburn zone; Sumatra Road, Solent Road and the Greek streets towards Fortune Green are in CA-P, Fortune Green; and Blackburn Road and Broadhurst Gardens fall in CA-R, Swiss Cottage. We pay for a bay by phone in all three, so your visitor hours stay yours.
Timing matters on Maygrove Road. Since August 2023 Kingsgate Primary has had a Healthy School Street, made permanent in February 2025: Maygrove Road between Barlow Road and Iverson Road, part of Loveridge Road and all of Ariel Road are closed to motor traffic from 7.45am to 9.30am and from 3.15pm to 4.45pm on weekdays in term time. If you live inside it, we arrive after 9.30am and finish or move the van before the afternoon closure. In the converted houses there is rarely a lift, so we run the hose up the stairs from the street; in a top-floor maisonette, clear the landing and stairs of shoes and bags before we come.
Spills and period wool
The flats here are busy and the floors show it. We clean a lot of lounge carpets in the converted houses near the station, often after a spill from a dinner at home, and a fair number of fabric sofas in the mansion-block sitting rooms. Wool is common in the older homes and the period rugs, and it cleans up well, but it needs the gentler low-moisture method and a slower dry so the pile does not shrink or brown.
There is a limit with dried-in marks. Where a flat-weave wool rug has a wine or curry stain that has dried and oxidised, especially on a light ground, we can lift it a long way but not always back to new. We spot test first and tell you what to expect before we start.

Extraction for synthetics, a gentler touch for wool
Our hot-water extraction steam carpet cleaning is the workhorse for the synthetic carpets in the conversion flats, and we turn it down to a gentler setting for the wool you find in the older houses. For the sofas and armchairs in the mansion blocks we offer fabric upholstery cleaning, spot tested on a hidden seam first. Larger wool and Persian pieces get full rug cleaning in the home, with a photo sent first for an old Persian. We cover the rest of Camden on the same fixed prices, along with neighbouring South Hampstead and Kilburn.
Questions from around the three stations
Do you cover the streets around West Hampstead Thameslink, up to Fortune Green?
We cover the whole of NW6 around the Thameslink, including Iverson Road, Mill Lane, Broadhurst Gardens, West End Lane and the Greek streets up by Fortune Green, such as Achilles Road and Agamemnon Road. If you are near the West Hampstead stations or over the line towards Kilburn High Road, we reach you on the same fixed prices.
Where will the cleaner park on West End Lane?
West End Lane and the streets off it are controlled, mostly in Camden’s CA-Q (Kilburn) and CA-P (Fortune Green) zones, so kerb space is permit or paid in the daytime. We are used to it. The van pulls up close enough to run the hose to a top-floor mansion flat, and we pay for a bay by phone if your road has no loading space.
Do you clean wool carpets and rugs from the period flats?
Yes, and a lot of them. The older houses around Sumatra Road and Dynham Road often have wool carpets and wool rugs, which we clean with a low-moisture method and a controlled dry so the pile holds its shape. Rugs are inspected and pre-treated before the wash, and the whole job is done in your home on the day.
How long will a carpet take to dry in a West Hampstead conversion flat?
Most carpets are dry within 6 to 7 hours, and we use less water than older systems so a converted maisonette off Iverson Road is not left damp. Wool and a thick rug take longer, sometimes a day or more if the weather is heavy, and a ground-floor flat with little airflow dries more slowly. We open things up and leave fans where it helps.
I live on Maygrove Road. When is the best time to book?
Mid-morning or early afternoon on a school day. Your stretch of Maygrove Road is part of the Kingsgate Healthy School Street, closed to motor traffic from 7.45am to 9.30am and from 3.15pm to 4.45pm in term time, so we book you between those windows, or any time in the school holidays. The price is the same whichever slot you take.
I let three flats in one converted house. Can you do them all in one visit?
Yes. With 40.6% of homes here flats in converted houses, some landlords own more than one floor of the same building. We price each flat by its rooms, clean them back to back, and give you a separate dated receipt for each so every tenancy file has its own. If the shared stair needs doing too, it is priced as a flight, from £41.
Every clean comes with our re-clean guarantee, so if a spot lifts back we return and put it right at no charge. We are fully insured and DBS-checked, and we have cleaned carpets, sofas and rugs across West Hampstead and the rest of NW6 since 2009.
