West Norwood sits in a bowl with hills on three sides, so almost every job we do in SE27 starts with a climb, up Knights Hill, along Rosendale Road or past the cemetery gates where Norwood Road forks at Robson Road. London Carpet Cleaning works these slopes from the York Hill estate to the conservation streets. A room costs from £36, and the carpet is dry within 6 to 7 hours, even on the steepest street.

Victorian streets around a Magnificent Seven cemetery
The housing is mainly Victorian and Edwardian terraces, long well-kept streets like Rosendale Road and Auckland Hill, many inside the conservation area that takes in Lancaster Avenue and the roads by the cemetery. A lot of them keep their bay windows, cornicing and original boards under the carpet. Around them sit the post-war council estates that replaced bomb-damaged streets, York Hill, Portobello, Holderness and Woodvale among them, plus a scatter of 1930s houses and converted flats. West Norwood and Tulse Hill stations both run Southern and Thameslink trains into central London.
The cemetery sets the tone of the town. It opened in 1837, the second of London’s Magnificent Seven after Kensal Green, laid out by William Tite with a grand entrance arch and catacombs on the rising ground, and it is now owned by Lambeth and registered Grade II*. The conservation streets beside it are where we find the most wool on the stairs.
Six numbers from the 2021 census
| Homes that are | Share |
|---|---|
| Built before 1900 | 57.5% |
| Flats in converted houses | 28.7% |
| Flats in purpose-built blocks | 32.1% |
| Rented from the council or a housing association | 21.0% |
| Rented privately | 34.6% |
| Without central heating | 2.8% |
The census area that matches this page is West Norwood East, in Knight’s Hill ward. The first figure is the one that shapes our work: the VOA count dates 57.5% of homes to before 1900, and those are the houses with long staircases, landings and pale wool laid over old boards. We clean wool low-moisture so the timber underneath stays dry.
The flats split two ways. Converted houses hold 28.7% of homes, each with a shared hall and stair carpet that takes every tenant’s shoes, and the purpose-built blocks on the estates hold another 32.1%. With 34.6% of households renting privately and 21.0% renting from the council or a housing association, move-outs and end-of-tenancy cleans come round all year. For a three-bed terrace in the conservation streets, the front room and one flight of stairs included, the bill is £192. Only 2.8% of homes have no central heating, so a carpet dries on time once the radiators are on low.
Figures: ONS Census 2021 (Lambeth 028) and VOA council tax stock, March 2024.
Parking, slopes and Feast Sundays
Most of West Norwood is still free to park on. Lambeth consulted residents on parking controls and healthy-streets changes for the West Norwood area from 14 April to 25 May 2025, and at the time of writing the council lists the scheme as analysing the results, with no zone in force. Rosendale Road is on a separate track: Lambeth’s West Dulwich decision, set for 14 January 2026, covers only limited controls along the Healthy Route there, with around 20 free short-stay shopper bays. Near Norwood High Street the time-limited shopper bays and the Waylett Place car park remain.
The slopes matter more than permits. On the steeper terraces the van often sits a few doors down, so we carry a long hose and walk the kit up. West Norwood Feast fills the streets around Norwood High Street on the first Sunday of every month from April to December, so on those days we park a street away and allow extra time. Moving a small table and clearing shoes off the stairs is all the preparation a period house needs.
Stairs, spills and worn runners
The job here is mostly traffic and family life. Stairs and landings take the brunt, edges greying first where everyone treads, and we lift a lot of set-in spills off period wool, the kind a beaker of Ribena leaves on a hall runner. Sofa arms are the giveaway on the upholstery side, worn dark from years of use before the cushions show anything.
The older terraces have one limit we always mention. Where a carpet has been walked threadbare along the centre of a flight, a clean pulls out the dirt and evens up the colour, but it cannot put back pile that has worn away, and we say so before we book.

Upholstery, mattresses and rugs in SE27
The hot-water extraction we use for steam carpet cleaning rinses the dirt out and pulls most of the moisture straight back, so a room is dry within 6 to 7 hours and not left damp underfoot. For sofas and tired settee arms we bring the same method down to fabric weight with our upholstery cleaning, and a wool rug that has had an accident on it gets our rug cleaning service in the room, with the odour treated down to the backing. We cover the rest of Lambeth, and up the ridge into Crystal Palace too.
What SE27 customers ask us
Which West Norwood streets do you cover, from Knights Hill to Idmiston Road?
All of SE27, from Knights Hill and Norwood Road across to Gipsy Road, Chatsworth Way and Idmiston Road, and the estates off Elder Road. We work the whole of West Norwood, the conservation streets by the cemetery included, and carry on into Tulse Hill, Gipsy Hill and West Dulwich.
Is parking a problem for the van on West Norwood’s sloping streets?
Not often. Most streets are still uncontrolled while Lambeth works through its 2025 consultation, and Rosendale Road has its own limited plan with free shopper bays. We carry our own water and power, so the van only needs a space within hose reach, and on the steeper terraces a short walk with the kit is fine.
Do you handle end-of-tenancy carpet cleaning here?
Often, given how many converted flats SE27 has. We clean the carpets to the standard agents and inventory clerks look for, and send a dated receipt the same day so it goes straight to your landlord or agency. That paperwork usually settles a deposit, and we make sure it lands before you leave the flat.
How long will carpets and mattresses take to dry?
Carpets are dry within 6 to 7 hours because the machine extracts most of the water as it goes. Mattresses are denser and hold more, so they can want the better part of a day with a window open, longer in a ground-floor flat where the air sits still. We tell you what to expect before we leave.
Can you clean a stair runner held down with brass rods?
Yes, in place. On the older terraces a runner with rods is common, and we clean it where it lies, working the wand along each tread and riser and keeping the moisture low so the exposed wood either side stays dry. The rods stay put unless one is loose, in which case we point it out and you can decide whether to have it refitted.
Do you work in the council and housing association flats on the estates?
Yes. About one household in five here rents from the council or a housing association, and the carpet inside your flat is yours to have cleaned, so you can book us directly. On York Hill and the other estates we ask about the entry system and the nearest bay when you book, and we carry the kit up the communal stairs where there is no lift.
Every clean comes with our re-clean guarantee: if a mark we treated lifts back as the pile dries, we come back and put it right at no extra cost. We are fully insured and DBS-checked, and we have cleaned carpets, sofas and rugs across West Norwood and the rest of south London since 2009.
