Sir Henry Heydon built Wickham Court in 1469, a red-brick house with octagonal corner turrets, and his wife Anne was a Boleyn, great-aunt of the queen. Four and a half centuries later the fields around it became an interwar suburb. London Carpet Cleaning has worked West Wickham, BR4, since 2009, from the semis off Corkscrew Hill to the flats above the High Street shops. Prices start from £36 a room, and carpets are dry within 6 to 7 hours.

Tudor manor, interwar suburb
West Wickham stayed a small Kentish village until the 1900s. The railway reached it on 29 May 1882, when the branch from Elmers End to Hayes opened, but the big change came between the wars, when the farmland filled with houses in a couple of decades. The bay-fronted semi with a front garden and a drive is the type here. Streets like Wickham Court Road and Corkscrew Hill were laid out in that rush, and most houses keep the original plan, a hall and a straight flight of stairs up to the landing and the bedrooms. The station took bomb damage in May 1941 and got new brick buildings in the late 1950s; today Southeastern runs four trains an hour to Charing Cross, so plenty of the homes belong to commuters who want the work done and dry before Monday.
The old village is still there if you look. Wickham Court, Grade I listed, stands on Layhams Road by the church of St John the Baptist, and since 2023 it has been a Coptic Orthodox centre. The green edges are proper woodland. West Wickham Common, nine hectares owned by the City of London since 1892, has around thirty veteran oak pollards, some at least 600 years old, and earthworks dating from the Neolithic to 1580. Spring Park lies beyond it, and Sparrows Den, at the foot of Corkscrew Hill, is home to Beccehamians RFC, a club founded in 1933.
Is every house here a 1930s semi?
| Home type, size or age | Share |
|---|---|
| Semi-detached houses | 47.1% |
| Detached houses | 16.8% |
| Built 1919 to 1944 | 72.1% |
| Three bedrooms | 38.2% |
| Four bedrooms or more | 38.9% |
| Owned outright, no mortgage | 45.5% |
Not every one, but most are interwar. The VOA’s council tax records date 72.1% of homes in this census area to 1919 to 1944, nearly three in four, and semis alone are 47.1% of homes. Detached houses add another 16.8%. The houses hold more carpet than the frontage suggests: 38.2% of homes have three bedrooms and 38.9% have four or more. A typical booking is the whole upstairs, the stairs and the through-lounge. A four-bedroom semi with its through-lounge and one flight of stairs comes to £246.
The people stay, too. Almost half of homes (45.5%) are owned outright, so many carpets were chosen by the current owners and have been down for years; wool and wool-mix are common in the front rooms. Private renting is only 11.6%, so check-out cleans are a small part of the work here. Central heating is missing from just 0.7% of homes, which keeps drying times short in winter.

Drives, the red route and the hill
Most of the interwar houses have a driveway or a hardstanding out front, so we park on your property and run the hose straight in. Bromley has no residents’ permit zone anywhere in West Wickham, so there are no vouchers to sort out. The main road is the exception. The High Street and Glebe Way are part of the A232, a TfL red route where the van cannot stop outside to unload, and so is Croydon Road towards Coney Hall. For a flat above the High Street shops we park in a side road and carry the kit round, and the parade by the station on Station Road and Red Lodge Road can be tight at busy times.
Corkscrew Hill and the roads up towards the Common climb steeply, and the Common itself sits on a steep scarp of sand and gravel. That gravel is what dogs and walkers bring home: sharp grit that settles low in the pile and grinds at it on every step. Vacuum the hall runner well the day before and clear the stair treads; the machine takes out the rest.
What wears out first in a West Wickham semi
The stairs and landing take the heaviest wear in a family semi, and the hall runner by the front door catches everything walked in off the Common and the recreation grounds. We lift the mud, the grey traffic lane down the middle of a lounge and the wine shadow under a dining table before guests come round. Old wool needs care. A stain that has sat in wool for years, especially something oxidised into the pile like old red wine or a pet accident that soaked to the backing, will lighten a great deal but may not disappear. If it will not fully shift, I tell you that on the day.

Wool-safe cleaning for carpets, sofas and rugs
Most bookings are hot-water extraction, what people call steam carpet cleaning, which rinses the detergent back out so the pile dries fast and does not re-soil in a fortnight. We also handle sofa and upholstery cleaning for two- and three-seaters and the dining chairs that come up before family visits. Loose rugs are cleaned on your floor during the visit as rug cleaning, and all you do is clear the space. We cover the rest of Bromley too, and neighbouring Coney Hall just up the road.
Questions from BR4
Which West Wickham streets do you cover, from The Grove to Corkscrew Hill?
All of BR4: the roads around the High Street and The Grove parade, Wickham Court Road, Corkscrew Hill down to Sparrows Den, Coney Hall, and the streets running toward Hayes and Eden Park. If you are near the Croydon boundary or West Wickham Common and are not sure, send the postcode and we confirm before booking.
Can you park at a West Wickham semi, or do I need a permit?
No permit is needed. Most of the interwar houses have a driveway or hardstanding, so we park on your own property and run the hose straight in, and Bromley runs no residents’ zone in West Wickham. Only the High Street, a red route, and the parade near the station get tight, and we plan around those with you.
Do you clean the older wool carpets in the period houses?
Yes, and often. A lot of the 1930s homes still have wool or wool-mix carpet, which needs a gentler detergent and controlled moisture so it does not shrink or brown. We test a hidden corner or an offcut first, then use a wool-safe method. Done that way it comes up soft and keeps its colour.
How long do carpets take to dry in a West Wickham semi?
Usually 6 to 7 hours for a normal carpet, because extraction pulls most of the water back out, so a morning clean is dry by the evening. A thick wool pile on a cold day, or a room kept shut, can stretch that a little further into the evening. We get the air moving and tell you which rooms to keep off until they are ready.
What is the grey line along the skirting in my front room?
It is usually filtration soiling. In houses with suspended timber floors, air drawn up through the gap under the skirting passes through the carpet edge, which catches the dust like a filter and slowly turns grey. We pre-treat that strip by hand before the main clean. A light line usually goes; a dark one that has built up over many years improves but can leave a faint shadow.
Can you clean fabric dining chairs on the same visit?
Yes. Upholstered dining chair seats are a regular add-on before Christmas or a family gathering. We test the fabric and treat food and drink marks first, then clean each seat with the same extraction kit we use on sofas. Tell us how many chairs when you book and we include them in your fixed price.
Every clean comes with our re-clean guarantee: if a spot we treated comes back, we return and sort it. We are fully insured and DBS-checked, and we have cleaned carpets, sofas and rugs across West Wickham and the wider borough since 2009.
