Hounslow made the Victorian core of Woodlands a conservation area in September 1999, saying nowhere else in the borough shows so complete a spectrum of mid-Victorian middle-class taste. Some villas off Woodlands Road run to more than 2,500 square feet, with wool runners on solid timber stairs. London Carpet Cleaning cleans them, and the terraces and flats nearer St John’s Road, across Woodlands, TW7. Fixed prices start from £36 a room, and carpets are dry within 6 to 7 hours.

A railway suburb from 1850
Woodlands is the wedge of Isleworth that grew up around the station. Isleworth station opened on 1 February 1850 on the Hounslow Loop, was renamed Spring Grove and Isleworth in 1855, and went back to plain Isleworth in 1911. The line brought the first suburban villas to this corner, described at the time as a slightly humbler version of nearby Spring Grove. Today the station is in fare zone 4, about 12 miles from Waterloo, with two trains an hour each way off-peak: into Waterloo via Brentford, and out via Hounslow.
The council calls the protected part the Woodlands Grove Conservation Area. Its appraisal picks out Nos. 17 to 41 Woodlands Road as an outstanding group of middle-class speculative houses, with stucco dressings and bracketed windows. These are big semis and villas with high ceilings, deep skirtings and original fireplaces, and they are large enough that one of them, No. 33, became a hotel in 1971. Later building filled in behind them, such as Hawkfield Court, a three-storey block of flats.
Around the villas the stock is smaller, terraces and blocks of flats off St John’s Road and towards the station, where the carpet tends to be a harder-wearing polypropylene.
Woodlands homes, counted
| Homes that are | Share |
|---|---|
| Two-bedroom homes | 40.2% |
| Terraced houses | 33.9% |
| Built 1973 to 1999 | 23.1% |
| Owned outright | 17.2% |
| Semi-detached houses | 15.9% |
| Built before 1900 | 12.9% |
The census does not use the name Woodlands. Its neighbourhood here is Syon Green, which covers Woodlands Road, the station and a long stretch of Isleworth towards the river, so the figures mix the villas with a lot of later building. Terraced houses are the commonest kind of house, at 33.9%, against 15.9% semis, and two-bed homes are the biggest group at 40.2%. A fair amount was built between 1973 and 1999 (23.1%), later flats and infill among the older streets.
The Victorian houses are a smaller share than the conservation area suggests, 12.9% built before 1900, but they are the ones that need the most care. Wool on a Victorian staircase wants less water and more hand work at the edges. For the terraces, the usual job is three bedrooms, the living room and the stairs, which comes to £192. Only 17.2% of homes are owned outright; the rest are mortgaged or rented, and that turnover brings plenty of pre-sale and change-of-tenant cleans. With central heating missing from only 2.2% of homes, a carpet here dries on time in any season.

Wool runners and dog hair
The job pattern here is shaped by the older houses. Wool carpet on a Victorian staircase needs a gentler hand than a synthetic landing, so we work the awkward edges and the bottom steps by hand and keep the moisture down to protect the backing. Spaniel and retriever hair worked deep into a hall runner is a regular call, along with front-room spills such as hot chocolate down the side of a settee, and most of it lifts cleanly.
Old set-in stains are where the limits are. A red juice or wine mark that has already dried into a wool pile will usually fade a long way, but on a pale carpet you can sometimes still pick out a faint ghost of it, and we tell you that on the doorstep.
Parking, driveways and the station end of St John’s Road
Several of the larger villas on Woodlands Road have their own driveways, which makes loading simple, and the hose runs straight in. Near the station it is tighter. The council added the north end of St John’s Road, by its junction with London Road, to the Spring Grove controlled parking zone, which at its 2012 review ran Monday to Friday, 9.30am to 5.30pm. On those streets a visitor permit or a Saturday booking keeps things simple; we check the entry plate on the day in case the hours have changed.
Inside, the big villas have long hallways and tall stairs, so give us a clear run from the front door to the top landing. Lift small rugs and pack away anything fragile on the hall table.
Carpets, upholstery and rugs in TW7
Most bookings here are hot-water extraction, what people call steam carpet cleaning, which rinses the dirt out of the pile and does far more than brush the surface. We also clean sofas and armchairs through our upholstery cleaning service, including the greasy headrest patches that build up on a fabric two-seater, and wool rugs are cleaned in your home through our rug cleaning, with a photo sent first for anything delicate. If your home is over in Isleworth town or anywhere else in the rest of Hounslow, the same team and the same prices apply.
Woodlands carpet cleaning: questions and answers
Which Woodlands streets do you cover, from Woodlands Road to North Street?
We cover all of Woodlands and the wider TW7 area, including Woodlands Road, Woodland Gardens, Sussex Avenue, Thornbury Park, St John’s Road and Spring Grove Road, and on into Old Isleworth around North Street. If you live near the Isleworth or Spring Grove boundary and are not sure if you are in our patch, send the postcode with your quote and we will confirm.
Is parking easy for the van at a Woodlands Road villa?
Usually. Several of the larger Woodlands Road villas have their own driveways, which makes loading simple, while the station end of St John’s Road is in the Spring Grove controlled zone on weekdays. Tell us the address and we will sort out where to pull up, so the equipment has a short run to your door.
Do you handle end-of-tenancy carpet cleaning here?
Yes, and it is one of our most common jobs around the station and the flats near St John’s Road. We clean every room, including the stairs, to the standard letting agents expect for a deposit return, and we can give you a dated receipt to hand over. Booking a day or two before your check-out date usually leaves enough margin for drying.
How long do carpets take to dry in a Woodlands period villa?
Most carpets are dry within 6 to 7 hours, and a mattress cleaned in the morning is usually fine by night. Thick wool in the big Victorian villas, and any ground-floor room with little airflow, can run longer, especially in damp weather. We use as little water as the job allows and open things up to speed it along.
Our stair runner is held down with brass rods. Do they need to come off?
No. We clean the runner in place, working the hot-water wand along each tread and riser and treating the edges by hand so the timber either side stays dry. Rods that are loose or bent are worth refitting before we come, because a runner that shifts under foot wears unevenly. If a rod is missing, tell us, and we will take extra care on that step.
Is our old wool carpet worth cleaning, or should we replace it?
If the pile is still standing and the backing is sound, a clean is usually worth it, because good wool lasts for decades and comes up well. Check the treads and the doorways: where you can see the backing through the tufts, or the carpet has split along a stair nosing, a clean will brighten it but cannot rebuild worn fibre. We will tell you which yours is on the day, before you pay for anything.
Every clean comes with our re-clean guarantee, so if a patch dries back we return and put it right. We are fully insured and DBS-checked, take our shoes off and cover your floors, and we have cleaned across Woodlands and the rest of Isleworth since 2009.
