In 1909 a local paper reported that Green Dragon Lane had gone from a narrow lane of trees and high hedges to a wide road lined on one side with large new houses, and many of their halls and stairs still carry wool over solid wood. London Carpet Cleaning covers World's End, N21, from Grange Park out to the 1930s semis off Slades Hill, from £36 a room; most carpets are dry within 6 to 7 hours.

A farm, a fever hospital and a wider lane

World’s End began as a farm. It was set up in 1777, after Enfield Chase was enclosed, on the line where the parishes of Enfield and Edmonton met, and the name was a common one for a remote holding on a parish edge. Today the area runs north to south along the western side of Grange Park, south-west of Enfield Town. In 1889 Enfield’s local board bought the farm site for an isolation hospital, and the larger hospital beside it on Worlds End Lane, opened in 1887 with 512 beds in 17 pavilions, became Highlands Hospital. It closed in 1993. Most of its buildings were turned into flats in the early to mid 1990s and new blocks went up around them; the hospital grounds had already been made the Highlands conservation area in 1986.

The houses came in two waves. The first followed Richard Metherell’s work in Grange Park: Green Dragon Lane was widened by 1909 and given its row of big Arts and Crafts detached and semi-detached houses, with deep halls and timber stairs. The second came in the 1930s, when residential roads were laid off Slades Hill and the local pub opened. Grange Park station, opened in 1910 on the Hertford Loop, gives most of these streets a short walk to Great Northern trains for Moorgate. Salmons Brook runs through the valley toward the golf course.

Detached houses14.4%

The census does not count World’s End on its own. The page’s centre falls in the neighbourhood it calls Winchmore Hill, so read these figures as a guide to this corner of N21. Semis are the biggest group at 47.6% of homes, detached houses add another 14.4%, and 46.2% of homes have four bedrooms or more. Almost half (49.1%) were built between 1919 and 1944, which matches the 1930s roads off Slades Hill.

What that means for a clean is a lot of carpet per house and most of it on traffic routes. The hall, the stairs and the landing take every trip, and those are the areas that grey first. One home in five (20.0%) is privately rented, so we also do move-out cleans between tenants. For a four-bedroom 1930s semi off Slades Hill with a through-lounge and one flight, the total is £246. With 0.9% of homes lacking central heating, drying is rarely held up, even in the colder months.

Is parking easy around World’s End?

On most roads, yes. The Edwardian houses on Green Dragon Lane and the 1930s semis off Slades Hill mostly have a drive or open kerb in front, so the van parks close and the hose runs a short way to the door. In Highlands Village, the hospital conversion, residents park in the courts and bays laid out with the flats, and we ask you to hold a visitor space for us if your block has one. Tell us the building name and the floor when you book.

Inside the older houses we cover the bare timber at the edges of the stairs before we start, so a wet hose never sits on polished wood. Clear the shoes and coats out of the hall and keep pets in the garden or a room we are not doing.

Family wear on good carpet

The recurring World’s End job is a well-made carpet that has had years of family life: stairs and a landing flattened and greyed down the middle, a lounge that has hosted every gathering, and the odd spill that sat too long. Ground-in crumbs and dropped candle wax come out, coffee and tea marks fade or go, and the grey lanes lift; before a sale the stairs photograph far better. Upholstery has its own pattern here. On a pale suite, the arm the dog has claimed for years can stay slightly darker than the rest after a full clean, since skin oil and weight in one spot work into the weave. If we think a patch will only come up part of the way, we say so at the start.

What we clean in World’s End

The main service is hot-water extraction, the deep steam carpet cleaning that flushes detergent and grit out of the pile so nothing is left to attract new dirt. Sofas and armchairs are covered by our upholstery cleaning, which is where that beige suite belongs. Delicate hall runners and wool rugs get rug cleaning in the home on World’s End Lane and the roads around it, with a photo sent first for anything fragile. We work across the rest of Enfield in the same way, and Grange Park is a regular stop, since World’s End runs along its western edge.

Common questions from World’s End

Which streets and postcodes do you cover around World's End?

The whole N21 side of World's End and the Grange Park streets it borders: World's End Lane, Green Dragon Lane, Firs Lane, the roads off Slades Hill and the flats of Highlands Village. World's End Lane runs across both N21 and EN2, and we clean either end, so a border postcode makes no difference to a booking.

Is parking a problem for the van on these roads?

Seldom. Most houses here, Edwardian or 1930s, have a drive or a clear kerb, so we stop by the door and the hose run is short. Grange Park station has only a small car park, so the streets right beside it can be busier, and there we might need a minute to find a space; it rarely delays a clean.

Can you get period stairs and a landing ready for a house sale?

Yes; we get this request a lot in World's End. The listing usually opens with a picture of the hall and stairs, which is exactly where the wear shows. We clean every flight and the landing, lift the grey lane from the centre and brush the wool level, and it needs up to 6 to 7 hours to dry, so use the stairs carefully, socks not shoes, until then.

How long do carpets take to dry in a World's End period house?

Allow 6 to 7 hours for most carpets; extraction recovers the water as it cleans. Dense wool in the Edwardian houses on Green Dragon Lane sits at the slower end, so a window or a fan helps, and a morning clean is ready by the evening.

Do you clean in the Highlands Village flats?

Yes. The old hospital buildings were converted into flats in the 1990s, with new blocks added around them, so a job there might be a one-bedroom flat in a former ward block or a family flat in a newer building. Tell us which block and whether there is a lift. Prices are the same as everywhere else, from £36 a bedroom.

Will cleaning get rid of the dog smell in our carpet?

In most cases it makes a clear difference. The smell sits in oils and residue in the pile, and hot-water extraction with an enzyme pre-treatment removes most of it. Where urine has soaked into the underlay over months, we treat those spots separately and tell you if the underlay is past saving, since cleaning the top alone will not reach it.

Every visit carries our re-clean guarantee: if something we treated is not right once it dries, we come back and fix it without charge. We are fully insured and DBS-checked, and World's End and the rest of Enfield have been on our round since 2009.

What our customers say in World’s End.

★★★★★
Had the lounge and dining room done after we hosted Christmas for the whole family. There was a mince pie trodden into the carpet by the tree. All gone now and the rooms feel fresh. Really good.

Our hallway runner had a candle wax spill from a dinner party that I couldn't get up. They lifted it cleanly and the rug looks lovely again. Friendly and on time.

Did our stairs and landing before we put the house on the market. Loads of foot traffic marks gone and it photographed brilliantly for the listing. Tidy and professional.

Got the spare room mattress cleaned ahead of the grandchildren visiting for half term. There was an old tea stain from a breakfast in bed years ago, now invisible. Pleasant and efficient.

Cleaned our beige three piece suite that had got grubby over the years. Big improvement overall. One arm where the dog sits didn't come up quite as bright, but they warned me it might not. Decent job.

Had the living room curtains cleaned, they were dusty and a bit faded. Came back nice and fresh. They arrived a fair bit later than the booked time due to traffic, but rang to let me know. Happy with the result.
